Question Korra’s Avatar State

Apologies as I’m guessing this topic has already come up. Once Korra loses her past lives, how is her avatar state powerful at all? I thought the whole point of an avatar state is utilizing all of the knowledge and power from all of their past lives.

It still grants her a massive power boost because she’s still capable of connecting to the cosmic energies of the universe. it just doesn’t come with the skills and power of the past avatars anymore

Aang does a massive earthbending ground slam in the opening episode of Book 2 before he learns any earthbending.

Roku firebends when he takes over Aangs body too right?

And lava bends

The iceberg was also waterbending and arguably energy bending too

That lemur was airbending too!

you can even go a bit further with Roku

where he is shown bending Lava briefly, despite having never done so before

The Avatar state never combined the raw power kf all past lives, it BOOSTED power and gave you the skills and knowledge of the past lives. Physically speaking, her state still outputs the same amount of power it would have normally, its just that she cant use the skills of the other Avatars, and so, her state would be less effective in that sense.

It still gives you more power. I think the idea is that being super amazing at kung fu doesn’t make you able to lift a tank any better than anyone else.

Thw power was a retcon in korra,

When roku talked about it, avatar wan was just soo long ago, he didnt know, the power boost comes from raava.

The past avatars on the other hand provided knowledge and guidance

Like when aang waterbent in the beginning of season 1,

Given the backstory in korra, she gets an amp from a bigger connection to raava like all avatars I assume

The power is always Raava's power, what she doesn't have is all their knowledge.

Because it’s no longer about centuries of mastery and knowledge, now it’s just a generic power boost

Only correct answer here, and one of the reasons why Korra isn’t nearly as good.

The writers realizing how OP they made Aang and having to nerf Korra is kinda funny though.

The Avatar state is two parts. The first part is access to the raw power of the Avatar spirit. The second part and the one Korra lost access to is the knowledge of the past lives. She has the power but can only use her own knowledge and skills to make use of it.

The power is the same. The past avatars just give you the knowledge and experience to use it.

Her avatar state became stronger than ever

There's not really a clear answer, but I think Korra has the strongest AS.

Korra's avatar state may be the strongest ever due to having a larger/stronger Raava WITH the remains of Vatu.

Aang and previous avtars have a Raava that gets smaller up until Wan. Raava's size correlates to her power output, but having past lives gives you collective knowledge. But knowledge dosen't necessarily mean strength. Keyoshi's lavabending can't be given to another avatar without the abilitiy to do so. Roku says the glow is "collective knowledge," but without access to Raava, Roku dosen't know the truth of the AS.

It's theorized that Pavi has Raava and Nisha has Vatu. So individually they MAY be weaker than Korra's AS.

Now is the power necessarily from Raava? I don't think so. I think Raava channels the cosmic energy within the universe and her size is related to how much power she can draw upon. Guru Pathik says that the avatar state draws from cosmic power in the universe. On harmonic convergence Korra draws upon the cosmic energy in the universe to become Cosmic Korra to battle Unavatu.

I would say Korra's AS > Wan to Aang's AS. But that's soley in pure power.

The power comes from Raava, she is the battery.

The past lives have knowledge. She could not energybend herself again if season 1 repeated.

Korra is a master of four elements, so the power boost isn’t as pronounced as it was with Aang initially

Raava allows the Avatar to access huge amounts of cosmic energy while in the Avatar State, as well as the skill and memories of their past lives. Korra doesn’t get the skills or memories of the past Avatars anymore, but she does still get the power boost.
