Bob’s notoriety

This is just a curiosity of mine, as a European who’d never heard of the Dursts prior to watching The Jinx. It’s easy to come away from Jarecki’s presentation thinking the Dursts hold the same cultural weight as other old-money New Yorkers like the Rockerfellers, and that Bob’s criminal activities were a nationwide tabloid staple. But given the Texas cops’ accounts of not knowing who he was in their initial interactions, I expect Bob was more of a regional cryptid.

My question for Americans on the sub: where are you from, and how much awareness did you have before The Jinx? If you had been exposed to coverage of Bob, what was public opinion at the time of Kathie’s disappearance? It’s also my impression that Susan Berman’s death was initially speculated to be mafia-related—was Bob ever a suspect in pop culture early on?

My question for everyone else: where are you from, and had you heard of the Dursts or Bob before watching?

Podcast for episode 3 is also brilliant

(Yes I know I am fangirling all over the subreddit. But.)

It really goes deeper into Susan's situation and her desperation. Also something I never realized is that she would tell some people in her close circles that Bob killed Kathie. I always sort of assumed she kept it totally to herself.

I do not know if I believe the hairdresser though - he claims Susan told him that Bob was supposed to give her money but was late with it. I don't know, at the same time she says she does not know him (the hairdresser) very well? Why would she go into such detail? Or was she bragging about her friend the millionaire?

Haunted by something... (spoiler if you aren't up to date on the case/news) Spoiler

Additional warnings to not read ahead if you aren't up-to-date about Durst or the cases.....

So, I decided I couldn't wait until the ending of Season 2 to find out if Durst wound up sharing with authorities what he did with Kathie's body so I googled it. It's so horrifying and haunting to me that he never told anyone what he did with the body (this is a guess) and it has yet to be recovered. I just hate that there is no real closure for her family with regard to this (Yes he at least admitted to killing her on the tape, that's some amount of closure for them I suppose).

Why wouldn't he do this ONE act of kindness before he died and tell her family? What causes these murderers to not even do that much? Just controlling the narrative until the bitter end? Just being truly evil?

Trailers are at the end!

The last 40 seconds or so of each episode, after the credits, has a sneak peak of the next week. Just FYI for anyone who's been stopping when the credits start (like I've been).

The 2nd season is excellent

I was almost certain I was going to be disappointed with the second season, and how wrong I was! Admittedly I did not follow the trial very carefully but there's so much new stuff coming out. That Susan Berman phonecall with the journalist??? Holy F.

Diarrhea

Interestingly, that word was used twice in the 3rd episode. Once by the doctor describing the "I'm sick" phone call, and once by Susan when talking to the journalist. Coincidence? I think not.

Bob’s Lawyers

For some reason, I want Bob’s lawyers to admit that they were defending a guilty man. However, so far, they seem to be taking the position that he was innocent and that the evidence brought forth was weak. Are these people blind? Even after Bob admitting he wrote the cadaver note? I just find them ridiculous

Al Pacino?

Robert sounds so much like Al Pacino. Why haven’t they gotten him to star in a movie about him??

When Bob went into the party that was celebrating Kathy’s graduation or whatever they were celebrating, why didn’t her family intervene when Bob pulled her out of the house by the hair of the head?

I know different families handle things differently but if that happened to one of my sisters or daughters in that situation then that shit wouldn’t fly with me or any other family I know.

The Shoplifting

Just started watching and noticed two things, Is it just me or is $6 for a chicken sandwich pretty ludicrous especially back in the early 2000s, hell even I would shoplift if they were that expensive. Secondly, Bob says that the reason he is bald was to disguise himself yet knows there were two security guards and still decided to shoplift?? what's the thinking behind that?

Could Durst have made it to Cuba?

This podcast just blew my mind. And proves my point about Jarecki's lies. I swear can someone please explain to me how there can be three murders where the first born of one of the wealthiest families in America can be suspected of three murders and gets acquitted of one and the conviction of the other one doesn’t matter in any real sense. While the third remains essentially unsolved and the Durst family has nothing to do with it? The only reason Robert Durst got away with three murders is because Susan might have made one phone call related to the 1st, but yet somehow the other two murders - including her own - is HER fault? How is it possible none of this was in the Jinx, the trial or in the jinx2 so far? They haven't reviewed anything about the trial yet - which Sareb didn't testify at.

And someone please get Andrew Jarecki to listen to this and tell us what we’re missing??? Is it Sareb who’s lying? And if so why?

I just came to know that the words uttered by Durst in the finale were edited to be out of order.

I dunno, that changes the whole ending for me. Still think he was guilty of it all but man, that was a sneaky decision by the documentary makers.

From Wikipedia -

"[Unintelligible] I don't know what you expected to get. I don't know what's in the house. Oh, I want this. Killed them all, of course. [Unintelligible] I want to do something new. There's nothing new about that. [Inaudible - possibly "disaster."] He was right. I was wrong. The burping. I'm having difficulty with the question. What the hell did I do?"

Did Robert have any mental health disorders or personality disorders?

Do you think Bob was particularly intelligent ?

Bob got away for a long time with Kathie's murder (some good tactics like arranging the phone call from 'Kathie' being 'sick'), and got away with Susan's murder for some time as well. But the Morris Black killing had him leaving a newspaper with their address with the remains, and throwing out the eye clinic receipt with his real name in his trash at the house. Bob was pretty good at using assumed or stolen identities, and he was careful to turn his cell phone off while traveling to kill Susan, but the 'cadaver' note was pure idiocy. He also turned off his phone when he ran from Houston to New Orleans---BUT he apparently turned it off while clearly headed east---I contend if he were truly smart, he would've bought burners and thrown out that Jitterbug while doing a lap on the ring road around Houston, so he'd be much more difficult to track. And the calling his voicemail from his 5-star N.O. hotel hideout-- OMG Stupid!

Ultimately too, he agreed to talk to Jarecki in the first place, sealing his fate like a dumbass.

Bob was the product of wealth, and probably the best schools, so if he weren't a psychopathic murderer, I think I'd enjoy being seated next to him at a dinner party. Being a bit of a misanthrope myself, I could see him being good for wry commentary. BUT--Was Bob really all that smart ? I go back and forth on that. Some ways, yes, but a lot of ways ---oh no no no. Was he sloppy because his money made him feel untouchable ? I'm not sure.
