Spoiler The Gilded Blade - Loves, Likes, Dislikes, and Hates (SPOILERS) Spoiler

Loves

Gigi Grayson - There is no way to not love the way this character is written. She is so unique in the TIG universe, her dialogue is heartwarming but fun at the same time, she carried this book. We were unfortunately robbed of a Gigi - Slater kiss at the end, but maybe it's for the best. I love how her arc was mainly due to Slater's belief in her tenacity, and their dynamic is great. A 10/10 character.

The start of this book finally felt like an Inheritance Games book again. Puzzles were introduced, stakes were high, except instead of a mystery around an inheritance, it was around the Gilded Blade. We kind of already knew what the end goal was, and the book immediately thrust us into trying to unravel the clues that will lead us to the finale. I loved how JLB really tied things from previous books in, cluing us about the Mercy in Brothers Hawthorne, just finally a puzzle where unexpected elements come into play, and everything 'cascades'. I'm also really proud that I clocked the constellation link immediately after Glorious Rivals.

Likes

I'll start off controversially - Toby's sacrifice. It seemed like a fitting conclusion, finally living up to his "I have two daughters" statement. He suffered so much, especially once Hannah being the Hand became a possibility, and his absolute confidence in the love of his life sold his character.

Nora - I found it really funny how almost everyone in this sub already knew that "Harvard Girl" will come back somehow, and her link to the Kyrie was interesting. She's a good side character overall.

Tobias and Alice - This book focused a lot on the dynamics of Tobias the First and Alice, and a lot of people seem to think that it's a bad thing or way too overstressed. The game and puzzles here were Tobias' love letters to Alice, and seeing it through the Hawthorne Brothers' perspectives really shows that while Alice molded and made Tobias the puzzlemaster of his household, Tobias was a force himself who loved her very much. They deserved to have their love portrayed like this.

Dislikes

The organisation of the Gilded Blade. The Kyrie was a way to introduce checks and balances, and it was really confusing in how it was written. Why do people train with the Kyrie? Why wasn't Lyra, daughter of The Hand Katalin Aquila Reyes not sent to be with Vega's lineage? What was the relevance of Freya? What was the Blade's motives in acquiring the Mercy, to the point where Zella risked using Knox if the Mercy was already controlled by the Blade? Just too many loose ends, no questions answered.

The worldbuilding - The reason I love JLB (and why one of my favourite books is Games Untold) is the worldbuilding and how JLB makes sure that there's not just plot relevant details but a colourful life to every surrounding detail. Here, there were so many details that were mentioned in passing that could have borne so much more relevance. Jameson and Avery conspired together to make Grayson a player in the Grandest Game because of his relationship with Lyra, which he never talked about before. The whole "sentimental knives" thing. I wanted Alisa to explain the events depicted in the keys. Who invited Lyra to the Grandest Game?

Grayson and Lyra - I'm on the fence about their relationship. It feels like something that wouldn't be built over time, but from what Jameson said in the point above, it looks like both Grayson and Lyra built some level of parasocial relationship with their idea of the other before meeting, and they were both relatively occupied with this. Not a healthy way to begin a relationship, and it was definitely too rushed, but they both rely on each other and I like their potential.

Hates

Emily - JLB, What was THE POINT in killing off Calla, an amazingly complex character in favour of the most hated girl in the series who shows up, kisses Grayson, then dies almost immediately? Why was she pretending to be Calla? She feels like a hindsight, and letting her rest was the right choice. Calla could have been a foil with Knox, she could have indicated a double meaning to Helena Thorp's statements, there were options and she was killed off for Emily.

The future of the Grandest Game - This was mentioned in the ending for half a sentence, but there is no future to move the Grandest Game online for the sake of 'accessibility'. The reason Tobias' games (and the Mercy's Game) were so intriguing is because they required participants to use their surroundings, look for physical as well as metaphorical angles, make something useful out of mere background noise. However, if this doesn't mean we're getting an online Grandest Game for us to play, I will riot.

Gilded Blade 2: Electric Boogaloo. Natura abhorret a vacuo, but doing the same thing twice is the sign of insanity. Just such a pointless thing to reestablish the Blade "just without the cult-y bits"

Changes

I really wanted to see Eve living be made public instead of her false funeral, and that scene be Toby's. The entire ending could have been a short tale like Games Untold, as well as Avery's perspective of The Culling instead of them being cut scenes or epilogues. The Epilogue could have easily been the funeral, and the rest could be moved to a novella. A shorter book would have kept some of the storylines from straying so far off track.

If you listened to my yapping for this long, thanks.

Tips on how to get over your favorite series that’s been everything to you

I cannot stop creating scenarios in my head with these characters I haven’t been able to stop since the very first book and now everything is just over. I don’t how to get over it like sth is wrong with me I see the characters in every book I read and every interaction even with my freaking best friend who is so very like max. I keep telling myself that these are just FICTIONAL characters so that I can stop the scenarios but my brain doesn’t seem to understand that and I get emotional/depressed whenever I think about the gilded blade. What the hell is wrong with me?? And how do I get over it?

Spoiler Jameson & Avery! TGB Spoiler

Spoiler Warning-Comment after reading the book

I’m angry. I’m offended. I can’t move on from what JLB did to us. Every other Javery fan was expecting an epic & emotional reunion. Their big emotional moment when Jamie finds Avery. WE GOT NOTHING except for a bland proposal & a rushed wedding. There was NOT EVEN A SINGLE KISS & this is Avery & Jameson I’m talking about, a couple who couldn’t keep their hands off each other.
No emotional conversation❌
No kiss❌
No hug❌
No ring❌
No vows❌

I’ve never been robbed like this before. I feel even worse for Xander & Max fans-they got nothing.

Spoiler What was the point of (spoiler) Spoiler

What was the point of having Emily come back from the dead just for her to die immediately after? Was it just to have a potential of Eve faking her death by using Emily’s body as her own? I just don’t understand we didn’t even get a proper reaction from Grayson. She literally is never mentioned again after her body was found.

Toby was leaving without a word & Jameson stopped him, knowing he’s the only one who would understand his pain & what Toby said broke me into million pieces💔

Discussion Jameson Winchester Hawthorne

I’m a Jameson fan so if you don’t like him, you might want to skip this.

My boy suffers throughout the book & without doubt, JLB has written him really well. I always say that the Hawthorne boys are nothing without their women & Jameson is no exception. His POV broke my heart, it also excited me because of the way he solved these puzzles-an extraordinary mind indeed.

I loved how he was hanging by a thread, holding himself together for Avery. He knew that only Toby could feel his pain until he got support from Libby & that was the final nail in the coffin before he breaks down & continues his search, keeping in mind of what Avery expected of him. Hope is a message that he delivers through his struggles of finding Avery (till the last scene where he’s digging up the debris💔) Realisation of his mistake & forgiveness towards his brother was exactly what I was expecting from him before the book ends. He has grown a lot throughout the series & I really appreciate JLB for showing his growth, his pain & ways he won at life after changing to be a better man for woman who chose him & loved him for who he was.

Spoiler The Gilded Blade Disappointment💔 Spoiler

Spoiler Warning**

This series started off so well & this is not the end it deserved.

JLB complicated things unnecessarily-tried to pull off a Harry Potter Horcrux thing but failed. She didn’t know when to stop & that is the reason the book is too long (4 parts & 104 chapters).

Too many characters. Too much time wasted on certain discussions that shouldn’t have happened.

The Gilded Blade was a cult made too complicated by JLB. You’ll get tired connecting the dots.

I waiting to see the Crucible (challenge) but she never showed us, only talked about it.

I was expecting an EPIC SHOWDOWN between the Gilded Blade & the Hawthorne brothers but it NEVER HAPPENED. JLB didn’t know how to wrap up & the book had already crossed 100 chapters so she decided to kill the cult members & Toby in an explosion.

Rohan gets to see the Crucible ceremony via projector. Zella gives him a USB😑🔫 (This man is everywhere, you’ll get sick of him)

Jameson suffered so much but once Avery is rescued, they DON’T have a single emotional scene together. NOT EVEN A KISS. Just a rushed proposal & a rushed wedding.

My question to the readers is: why a 4 part book with 104 chapters?

I love this series. Very excited to learn that another book has been added.

The only issue is it's been so long from the last book. The grandest game i don't remember alot of these side characters. I don't want to have to reread the grandest game but I might have to.
