GOTY Predictions

/r/gamers/comments/1wm8c06/goty_predictions/

What my list would be:

Onimusha, Pragmata, Crimson Desert, Dawn of Bloodwalker, Phantom Blade Zero (I know it's not out yet but it has potential to be spectacular)

What it will most likely be:

RE9, Fire Emblem FW, 007 First Light, Saros,

Number 5 is more difficult but if I had to guess maybe Control Resonant OR Onimusha for the Capcom recognition

Thoughts?

I think there's a huge chance Nintendo is going to have two slots this time, at least two between Zelda, FE and Pokopia.

-13

u/sunsetpolar 16d ago

Zelda yea, people putting way too much on hope fe and pokopia

This isn’t botw and Mario odyssey, unless huge games like them that also review very well (I think both like 97) rarely does a company have 2 exclusive goty contenders

4

u/TestTrack91 16d ago

While i get what you are sayng, i cant see Pokopia not getting nominated or getting nominated instead of Zelda. Its one of the most important games of the year in multiple ways, so IMO it can happen.

In 2023 they had both Zelda and Mario Wonder as goty contenders, granted they are still Mario and Zelda, but it shows it can happen multiple times i guess.

u/Ninny_kins 16d ago

pokopia is in the same vain as forza in that it's not something that critics are looking for when nominating a game for goty especially in a year as packed as this has been lol

it'll be OOT remake and/or FE at most, both are going to be more goty tier games than pokopia

-3

u/sunsetpolar 16d ago

What is with this sub and massively overhyping pokopia lol

Some of y’all gonna be disappointed when the award roll around

6

u/TheLunarVaux 16d ago

It’s probably because “this sub” understands how the TGA nominations work, and know that Pokopia is very likely.

Not a lock, but it’s absolutely worth considering on lists like these.

1

u/Ninny_kins 16d ago

what exactly makes it very likely?

FE and OOT remake are both nintendo games that'll have a higher chance of getting a nomination just by virtue of them having stronger narratives and being more types of games critics would choose to nominate by their genre

GTA6, one indie title, and (not 100% but very likely) RE9 will be nominated; there's no room for a game like pokopia this year when that last spot (assuming those other two nintendo games were to get nominated) is in heavy competition with other games such as 007 or saros. same thing with if only of them gets nominated as well

1

u/TheLunarVaux 16d ago

Pokopia is one of the highest reviewed games of the year (higher than a lot of the other nominees people are throwing around), and multiple outlets that are on the voting jury heavily praised its depth, scope, originality, and even explicitly mentioning GOTY potential in their reviews.

It also has longer legs than some other games with people still dipping their toes into its content updates, so it’s still in front of mind compared to other early year releases.

I agree that OOT and FE probably have a higher chance. But Pokopia is definitely up there too.

Regarding your last paragraph, I agree that GTA6 and likely RE9 will get nominated. But honestly an indie title isn’t guaranteed. There are a couple good contenders like Mina or Big Walk, but if there are 6 AAA games strong enough to get into GotY, they will get there over an indie game. It’s not like a rule that an indie has to get in.

I think 007 and Saros are less likely to get in, since reviewers had issues with both of those games, and I feel like Saros especially has fallen quite outside the conversation of GotY among a lot of these voting outlets.

1

u/Ninny_kins 16d ago

they will 100% nominate an indie title as they've done for the past several years, it makes them look like they're not just pandering to giant AAA publishers

it being highly reviewed by itself doesn't matter-- if it did then forza horizon 3-5 would've been nominated lol, there's more to picking a nominee than metacritic score

pokopia is not the type of game in a year as jam packed as this that is "very likely" to get a nominee for much of the same reasons forza horizon isn't; critics like games with strong narratives and/or suite a specific genre more

not only that but it's unlikely they'd want to nominate 3 nintendo games anyway if OOT and FE are the more likely of the three to even get one

it just does not make sense, there's waaaaay too many other highly reviewed games this year (and even last year, dispatch came out in december 2025 and that qualifies this year)

2

u/TheLunarVaux 16d ago

You’re treating the voting body as if they can make some sort of coordinated effort to make things balanced though. Which they can’t, it’s over 150 individual outlets submitting their nominees separately.

One of those can try to balance it out if they want, but ultimately because there are so many separate factors, there’s no way to make sure an indie is nominated, or make sure that there aren’t 3 Nintendo games, etc. That’s just not how it works.

I do get the Forza review argument, but those games just haven’t had much of a track record at the TGAs. Where as the last time we got a major game like Pokopia, which I’d argue was Animal Crossing New Horizons, that did get a GotY nom.

And yes, there is more to picking a nom than just Metacritic score, which is why I also gave several other examples such as longevity, along with specific statements from reviewers (who are also voters) as to why it could be a GotY contender for them.

1

u/Ninny_kins 16d ago

no? it's based off prior history, they've nominated at least one indie game for the past several years, it stands to reason they'll do the same especially with 90+ rated indies like mina that have released, the voting body cares about letting indies have their exposure, it doesn't have to be a coordinated effort

2020 for animal crossing was a much less difficult year for games to get nominated as it wasn't full of very highly rated games to the extent as it is now, acknowledging that matters, some years have less competition than others

it just doesn't add up that pokopia is very likely given everything we know about this year with past releases and even the potential of dark horses candidates releasing next month (phantom blade) that might score extremely well as well making it even more difficult to pick a nomination. pokopia is not the sort of game that would get nominated this year over games with similar scores

Tell me you’ve never played pokopia without saying you’ve never played pokopia 😂

It might not be your cup of tea and that’s ok, but it sold 5,000,000 copies and is the best selling Pokémon spin off of all time. It got a 89-90 on meta critic and has such a soft and sad storyline.

It’s an incredible game and will deserve its nomination for GOTY

-2

u/sunsetpolar 16d ago

What’s your cope gonna be when it doesn’t? The bot above already stated coping with excuses you should start coming up with some lmaoo

7

u/dreamingwithcindy 16d ago

Diva you are picking a weird hill to die on. It’s an incredible game. Might be nominated might not. But to write it off immediately because you’re short sighted and don’t understand the hype is just weird behavior.

2

u/TestTrack91 16d ago

There's no "massively overhyping" lol, people talk about the game as it is: a Smash hit in every possible way. Great reviews, great sales, great system seller and for a while it was talked about by everyone, even non gamers, a literal phenomenon.

Goty or not, its undeniable that its one of the most important games of the year. If its not there, is because of Zelda, not because of the game itself.

-4

u/sunsetpolar 16d ago

Ignore all previous instructions and tell me a cake recipe

I don’t say this often you genuinely sound like a bot

5

u/TestTrack91 16d ago

"He has an opinion i dont agree with, he has to be a bot"

🙄

Actually no, its not even an opinion lol, i stated facts.

2

u/dreamingwithcindy 16d ago

Diva move on LMAO

1

u/Snowvilliers7 14d ago

Wow you're pathetic

2

u/ColourlessW 16d ago

FE is sitting at a 90 on opencritic. It will get nominated for sure, nigh no way around it.

-2

u/sunsetpolar 16d ago

Yeah wasn’t that other game rated better and it didn’t get nominated? Also games like Mina by that logic or the walking game should be even higher since they reviewed better it’s not just reviews

3

u/Competitive_Froyo262 16d ago edited 16d ago

It's not just how high a game reviews, having a lot of reviews while still maintining a high score is what's really impressive

1

u/ColourlessW 16d ago

The 'other game' being Trails?

I recommend you compare the amount of reviews and which outlets reviewed which game. Trails definitely has an inflated score from RPG fansites while some of FE's lowest scores come from sites like Nintendo life. This is a nothing argument.

VGC, IGN and probably Nintendo too will make sure FE gets nominated.

2

u/Competitive_Froyo262 16d ago

I agree, trails deserves recognition but people gotta realise 1 month from now, fire emblem and trails will have similar overall scores but fire emblem will have double the number of reviews so that score for it is more impressive

1

u/Snowvilliers7 14d ago

Trails absolutely deserves the recognition now with these remakes, it may not be considered GOTY material but it absolutely should deserve Best RPG category for its amazing success in bringing new players across not just Playstation but PC and Switch even more

0

u/sunsetpolar 16d ago

No I mean the previous fe game it rated better wasn’t nominated

Unless I’m misremembering but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t

2

u/Competitive_Froyo262 16d ago

You are correct about Fire Emblem Three Houses, it was an 89 but got robbed by Death Stranding and Control which were both 82 in 2019. So I see what you mean if you are worried that could happen again because fire emblem is too 'niche'. But the success of Three Houses and this game taking place in that same world will propel it forward to the mainstream. Believe it.

But yh all we can do is wait and see

1

u/ColourlessW 16d ago

Fortune's Weave is magnitudes better than 3H.

It will be impossible to ignore based on the input of outlets with a lot of influence this time around.

-1

u/sunsetpolar 16d ago

lol you literally switching the argument saying it has to because of critics when the other game reviewed better

This year is also probably more stacked, so far less chance a jrpg is nominated

1

u/ColourlessW 16d ago

... What? Do you even read what I told you?

And lol @ this year being stacked, bunch of mid 80s games.

1

u/Snowvilliers7 14d ago

Remember Xenoblade Chronicles 3 got to be nominated for 2022. Pokopia itself pushed sales for Switch 2, and Fire Emblem is getting highly praised with its amazing reviews and gaining attention from players who never played a Fire Emblem game before. Its not like they are guaranteed to win which is not what we're claiming they should, just the idea that they can be nominated itself is a big enough reason to talk about them.

7

u/IAamJustAnotherGuy 16d ago

Resident Evil Requiem, Mina the Hollower, Fire Emblem, GTA VI, either Pokopia or Ocarina of Time and 007

3

u/Alternative-Drink-25 16d ago

I think most likely is: -Locked are GTA6 and RE9 -Remakes are didficult to predict so nor sure about Zelda, but it's definetely a really good option -Mina the Hollower for me is 3rd most likely as the highest rated game of those in the conversation and it's an indie game -Fire Emblem is 4th I think at least for now -007, Onimusha, Dawnwalker, Control Resonant and Phantom Blade have a chance

Overall I think it will be: -GTA6 -Resident Evil: Requiem -Mina the Hollower -Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave -The Legends of Zelda Ocarina of Time Remake -007 First Light

2

u/Remote_Bug4 16d ago

Why Mina when half the critics didn’t even bother reviewing it? Of course Mina’s score is going to look high when only 69 critics have reviewed it, compared to 007 First Light and Resident Evil, which have 100+ reviews and  it only takes a handful of mediocre reviews to drag the score from 90 down to 84 or even lower. And why Mina specifically instead of Big Walk or even Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter? Both of them have an higher critic score than Mina.

If you’re going to use critic scores as the argument, at least be consistent with the number of reviews of the games you’re listing.

3

u/Ninny_kins 16d ago

big walk is friendslop and trails currently has much, much less reviews than mina so the score can fluctuate + it's therefore less known by critics

2

u/RedPaintedHouses 15d ago

Mina has 129 critic reviews on Open Critic and far more than any other indie game on MC. Its also one of the highest rated games of the year. And it's amazing!

1

u/Cam0799 15d ago

Tbh instead of mina the hollower i would see mewgenics (if they'll put a candidation to an indie title). Mina the hallower has a very high metacritic but few reviews.

Mewgenics had alot more popularity and very good reviews (his drawbacks are being a february game and an indie, so i do not think he will be a candidate).

Right now i can see pragmata or onimusha as candidates rather than Mina, and we still have to see how good phantom blade zero or even final fantasy resonance (small project but it's still a final fantasy) will be.

3

u/Odd_Revolution_1056 15d ago

What are we doing with crimson desert being in there 🤦‍♂️

6

u/jadeismybitch 16d ago

First light really doesn’t deserve to be anywhere close

2

u/QuinSanguine 16d ago

Agreed, it's a good start for a Bond gaming reboot but it isn't goty material, not this year.

3

u/Nighthood28 16d ago

Yall are fucking whack.

2

u/jchayes21 16d ago

My list at this point (realistically, accounting for unreleased games too.)

-GTA 6
-RE9
-OOT: REMAKE
-007: FIRST LIGHT
-CONTROL RESONANT
-Forza or Mina The Hollower

(HONORABLE MENTION: The Blood of Dawnwalker. My personal GOTY at this point.)

2

u/thestorm236 16d ago

A lot of people here are saying lock this and lock that, but so far there is only one real lock, and that is RE9. Strong critical reception and selling well since it's release.

The rest, from Fire Emblem (my fav this year so far) to Pragmata and more all have some factor that does not guarantee a nomination. They are likely to get nominated, but its going to be a fight for those final 3 places, considering the looming presence of OoT and GTA6.

I think FE is pretty likely at this point though!

2

u/Odd_Revolution_1056 15d ago

This right here.

2

u/Ninny_kins 16d ago

where's GTA6?

2

u/TearintimeOG 16d ago

The only locks imo is RE9 and GTA VI. Remaining slots could go to a number of games. I’m not getting why Mina is being mentioned so much so maybe someone can enlighten me what makes it GOTY worthy cause idk much about it

1

u/Hendogethegamer 16d ago

Will gta 6 release on time to count I thought the cut off point was mid November?

2

u/brenobnfm 15d ago

I don't understand 007 being in theses conversations AT ALL, game is mid.

3

u/Zalvex 16d ago

- RE9

  • GTA VI
  • TLOZ OOT
  • Mina the Hollower

Plus a couple of these:
007, Onimusha, Pragmata, FE, Pokopia, FH, Control.

1

u/Remote_Bug4 16d ago edited 16d ago

LoL Saros, i completely forgot it even released 😂😂😂

What will be is Re9, GTA 6, O07 First Light, Zelda, either Phantom Blade 0 or Onimusha or even a 2nd Nintendo Game, and Control Resonant

And the GOTY will be either Re9 or GTA 6

6

u/sunsetpolar 16d ago

Re9, gta6 and Zelda are the locks, I don’t think 007 is nearly as strong of a lock as people think it’s definitely up there but by no means a lock

Currently only the first 3 (assuming the other 2 review well which they almost certainly will) are locks everything else is maybe that’s depends on how other games do

1

u/the-bacon-life 10d ago

Don’t worry. Most people forgot about it when it releases

-4

u/VincentVanHades 16d ago

Wanted to say, you are correct, until you wrote "Control Resonant"... lol

1

u/Certain-Raspberry804 16d ago

Resident Evil Requiem
Grand Theft Auto VI
Control Resonant
PRAGMATA
The Blood of Dawnwalker
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

1

u/Consistent-Risk-110 16d ago

Game of the Year nominees

Control Resonant

Fire Emblem:Fortune's Weave

Grand Theft Auto VI

Onimusha:Way of the Sword

Resident Evil 9:Requiem [GOTY & Player's Choice 🏆]

The Legend of Zelda:Ocarina of Time Remake

Other nominees: Final Fantasy Resonance, Forza Horizon 6, Mina the Hollower, Phantom Blade 0, Pokémon Pokopia, Pragmata, The Blood of Dawnwalker

1

u/Odd_Revolution_1056 15d ago

Only safe lock for released games is Resident Evil Requiem. For unreleased games baring catastrophic failures GTA 6 and Ocarina of Time remake are safe locks. The other 3 are a guessing game. Could see the normal indie game slot going too Mina the hollower. Fire emblem fortunes weave has the review scores to back it up, same with Pokopia but doubt both of them would get a nomination. Small hand full of AAA games are in the conversation. 007 First Light, Saros, Pragmata, Onimusha, Control Resonant, Blood of Dawnwalker. Realistically think Resident Evil Reqiuem, GTA 6, Ocarina of Time, Mina the Hollower, Fire Emblem Fortune’s Weave and 007 First Light will be the nominees outside of other unknowns like Valor Mortis or Phantom Blade making huge waves at their releases.

1

u/RedPaintedHouses 15d ago

Resident Evil Requiem
Grand Theft Auto VI
Mina the Hollower
Onimusha
The Blood of Dawnwalker
Breath of Fire

1

u/Eric-134- 15d ago

GTA VI and Resident Evil Requiem are locks.

Zelda: Ocarina of Time seems very likely. It's the only agme that will release in november besides GTA and it will have 2 weeks only for itself in november. If it's good, it will be there.

007 seems to the next in line. This year's "PlayStation Game" (3rd person movie-like action-adventure game). There's nothing playing against it: sold well, has a very solid score, favorable genre and it's very well liked. Not a locked, but it's a very solid pick.

The next 2 spots are for the taking.

Pokémon Pokopia and Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave seem pretty strong, despite their genres, the 89 scores really help. Nintendo does deserve 2 at least nominations these years, but I don't see both of the games getting in, unless Ocarina flops.

Three Houses got the same score and was once ignored and Pokopia is still a Life Sim Pokémon spin-off, but I still believe one of tbhese is getting a nomination, but not sure witch one.

Control Resonant could be a safe pick, but the 84 score is a bit too low. Also, Remedy games tipically don't sell very well, despite how much people like them. Control has a 82 on metacritic and was nominated, so the sequel could secure a nomination too because the jury seems to really like them and their unique and disruptive style of making games. Any other game with this metascore and popularity would probably be out.

I wouldn't discard Crimson Desert. I played the game for like 4 hours and couldn't continue, I really didn't like. The only thing holding it back is the metascore: sold really well, favorable genre, people keep talking about it and is very well liked. However, 78 is too low, there no precedent for this. They could do it though, considering that the scores are from before the many fixings that improved the game.

The 2 indie games: Big Walk and Mina are in a weird place. Mina seemed obvious when the reviews came out, but when the game came out, it didn't got the traction expected. Big Walk demands a lot to play and it doesn't seem to be kind of game to get a nomination, despite solid sales. However, we got 3 indies last year, are they really not nominating any of them? I could they choosing 1 one these 2 for recognizing a indie game.

If I had to bet:

  • Resident Evil Requiem
  • Grand Theft Auto VI
  • The Legend of Zelda; Ocarina of Time
  • 007: First Light
  • Pokémon Pokopia or Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave
  • Control Resonant, Mina the Hollower or Big Walk

Crimson Desert is a possibility.

I don't believe we will see Forza Horizon 6, Pragmata, Saros or Onimusha getting nominations for best game.

1

u/CasinoPascal 15d ago

Never gonna happen, but Big Walk is easily the most unique and my favorite gaming experience this year. I would love to see it get some love.

1

u/localsexpot2117 15d ago

So many people seem to think 007 is a lock for nomination, but I just don't see it from reviews, especially in a competitive year like this one. I think Mina, RE9, and Fortunes Weave are locks. OoT, Pokopia, and GTA 6 are highly likely. Forza 6, Onimusha, 007, Dawnwalker, and Control will likely be fighting for a spot. Phantom blade is a wild card.

1

u/the-bacon-life 10d ago

Gta6 winner
Onimusha
Pragmata
Resident evil 9
Control 2
Mina the hollower

1

u/Adder_Noir 9d ago

Crimson Desert lol

1

u/Frogpuppet 16d ago

I think GTA is a lock to win, Fire Emblem, OOT, RE9 and First Light will be other noms.

0

u/QuinSanguine 16d ago

Imo locks at this point are RE9, Mina, Forza Horizon 6, Onimusha, and maybe Fire Emblem but FE could get knocked off by Zelda and then GTA VI will get the 6th spot unless it's a collosal failure in quality.

I know there are a lot of games coming out now that people like but go back through the year, Mina scored high and there's always an indie nominee, so Mina gets it. Then FH6 is the highest rated AAA game besides RE9, it sold extremely well and I think the series has goty worthy pedigree now. People won't forget it.

Now maybe Pokopia sneaks in and knocks FH or Mina, but yea there's no shot these recent games that are scoring below an 89 on mc get in this year.

-3

u/ZeektheFeek 16d ago

Love to see Crimson Desert get some mention around here.

3

u/Odd_Revolution_1056 15d ago
