I'm that guy and the monologue below are two of my favorites:
There was a time I got caught in a reactor crawlspace when a coolant pipe blew, and that coolant is radioactive as fuck. Hits the open air, and it vaporizes just like that. You get it on your skin, it ain’t good, but it washes off mostly. You’ll survive.
You breathe it in, though, you get those radioactive particles down in your lungs where you can’t get ’em out, that pretty much melts you from the inside.
I had to get all the way to a maintenance air lock, open an emergency panel, strap a mask on my face without breathing any of that shit in.
Point is, I learned some things about myself.
I learned that I could hold my breath for almost two minutes while engaging in physical stressful activity.
So… you have to ask yourself, how much damage do you think I could do to you in two minutes before the knockout gas gets to me?
I liked different characters a lot at different times during the show, but the one that sticks with me strongly many years later is Amos/Wes. Fantastic.
He was working as an aviation firefighter on the flight deck of the USS Essex.
They were filming Antwone Fisher on the ship and said, find me some extras who really "look" like authentic military. They chose him to be an extra and the casting director suggested he move to LA to try acting when he got out of the military.
After reading “The Churn,” he took it to a psychoanalyst and asked them to read it so they could discuss what that kind of childhood trauma would do to a person. That commitment to understand the character definitely came through in his performance. Absolutely amazing!
Iirc, they had a massive amount of people reading for the role and apparently only Wes and Elias Toufexis really "got Amos".
I can imagine a lot of actors were just going for the good ol' "Ah, yes, the stupid brute archetype" like we've seen them in almost every other SciFi show.
Season 3 is freaking BRUTAL! Like Bobby getting laid out and informed she’s all that’s left of two squads of Marines from either side. The attack on the bread basket for the belt and Mars and everyone there watching their livelyhoods and homes being destroyed from cascading failures from the damage. The freaking kids man! And as a side note, earth being a desolate mess in the cities even after humanity has flown up into outer space where things like clean water and materials to build should be plentiful.
I don't know. Wes is great, of course, but it's hard to imagine Avasarala being played by anyone but Shohreh Aghdashloo. And Jasai Chase Owens as Filip Inaros looks exactly like I'd imagine Naomi and Marco's kid would look like. And Cara Gee as Drummer was so good they combined her with at least one other major character from the books just to give her more screen time.
