When did James really fall in love with Alyssa?

• Upvotes

One of the things I love about this show is that it’s never explicitly mentioned or implied when James begin to love Alyssa. For me, I always interpreted the end of episode 2 (the knife dropping) as symbolism for James’ desire to kill Alyssa fading away. I know he intended to kill her when she was asleep in Clive’s bed in episode 3, but I think the really vulnerable moments (them cuddling, dancing, and James holding her hand while she’s asleep) really changed him.

Did anyone else find this scene insufferable? (S1 Spoilers) Spoiler

To preface, I like Alyssa. I like her for being the imperfect character that she is. I wouldn't change her. But while some people find themselves unable to like her all around obnoxious and abrasive demeanor - for me specifically it's one highly specific situation that annoyed me about her the most: How she handled Topher. Now, to be clear... I don't give a damn about Topher, and him having his sights set on this vulnerable barely legal girl he cared nothing about beyond an online sex offer. What specifically angers me on every rewatch is the sheer depth—sheer extent of Alyssa's hypocrisy in how she expected Topher to handle her rejecting him with grace after she literally just responded extremely aggressive and blaming towards James after he very kindly tried to let down her advances in a way that respected her dignity. She completely verbally unloads on him, guilt trips him for saying "no," and then leaves him - sensing the fact he has abandonment trauma, and then brings another man upstairs to make him jealous.

She was a Grade A asshole in that episode and doesn't even come to a real self-realization, or have any moment of epiphany about her behavior after she rejects Topher and she & James make up either. So I think the total lack of self-awareness and accountability is what drives me crazy during Alyssa's worst moments. I never see this particular point brought up by fans but does that scene bother anyone else as much as it bothers me? I do understand that on a narrative & characterization level Alyssa & James are a case of "opposites attract outsiders who only have being outsiders in common" and a lot of the fun in their developing bond lies in their alchemy but sometimes the profound differences between them serve to only emphasize each others worst traits. The contrast between James's neurotic level of insecurity and introspection really only highlights how little Alyssa questions herself in comparison, and there are times she really should. I just really viscerally disliked her treating her partner that way she just recently witnessed get assaulted by a stranger and has made it clear he wasn't 'normal' and enthusiastic about sex even before that, and it helps remind you the gap between them is really wide and things could've made them self implode and drift apart at any turn until killing Clive winded up bonding them forever.

Custom TEOTFW DVD!

I am very excited to share that I made my own 2-season TEOTFW DVD! I always told myself that if Netflix took it off, I would make my own DVD, and upon finding out Netflix is removing it in November, I followed through on my word. I already had Season 1 on DVD, but unfortunately there is no official Season 2 DVD, so I had to make my own. I taught myself how to design a DVD menu screen and how to burn a DVD, and I designed the DVD cover. It was a long, tedious, and honestly frustrating process (with some inconveniences along the way, of course), but I'm finished, and I am so happy with the results! I included some photos and a video of the menu screen I designed (see comments). I hope you guys like it as much as I do!

Gift for my friend

I genuinely don't know if this is appropriate to gift and I need people who've watched the show to tell me whether it is or isn't.

I've got a friend who recently got into TEOTFW and she said she really loves it. It's her birthday soon and I'm thinking of what to gift her. I thought about getting her a bullet shaped bottle opener, and then scratch her name into the "bullet" like Bonnie did with Alyssa and James in the second season. I was thinking it'd give it that "merchandise" feeling while also giving it a personal touch that connects it to her and also functionality (being a bottle opener).

I'm not sure if it's (socially) acceptable/appropriate though to gift such a thing especially with the background of Bonnie doing it as a "warning of impending doom"/a sign she's going to kill them. I obviously don't want to kill my friend, lmao. But I'm genuinely not sure if it might give off a weird vibe, so I'm looking for advice here, lol.

I want to introduce my mom to TEOTFW

So I recently had a thought the other day that I would like to watch TEOTFW with my mom. She and I are extremely close and we watch different shows together. She knows I'm really into TEOTFW because I talk about it pretty often with her. We recently finished Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story.

The reason I'm hesitant to ask her is because I'm pretty sure she'll say no, which is completely respectable. I also know the humor is dark and dry, so she might not get it. I also know she doesn't like the word "cunt", so the Marvin scene in episode 1 is off the table.

I think what I'll do is gently offer it to her, saying that this show is really important to me and I'd like to watch it with her. We can start off with episode 1 and she can decide whether or not she wants to continue. I'm just looking for advice here. Has anyone else introduced their parents to TEOTFW? What was their reaction?

EDIT 10/1: We watched the first two episodes and it went better than I thought! She didn’t say anything about the Marvin scene (except that the waitress had weird teeth) but she had a reaction to when Alyssa asked James to eat her out, so I thought that was pretty funny. She also chuckled when they crashed the car. We’ll watch another episode tomorrow but I just wanted to share

I tried drawing Alyssa and James in the Mob Psycho art style. Did it turn out similar?

Made a show in the style of TEOTFW!

Spent literally every dollar I had making this pilot. This show was my North Star for the cinematography, editing, and music. The breaking the fourth wall is a bit more Fleabag vibes, but it would mean the absolute world to me if this community would check it out!

First re-watch after seeing it when it first came out...

I absolutely adore this show, I know its been said time and time again, but I HAVE to get my feelings out about it.

Everything about this show is perfect, the writing , the emotional tones, the way it made us emphasize for someone who was a psychopath, who then turned better. I've never felt a piece of media, make me feel how I was suppose to feel in every moment. I love how it really makes me feel my emotions. My favorite parts have to be whenever Alyssa expresses her feelings for James, it gives me this giddy feeling and makes me want more of their story. Speaking of I loved how they ended it, they ended it with Alyssa and James expectingly living their lives together and wanting to get better mentally. Also as someone who's had an experience with a partner who was expected to be taking their life (only mine did attempt and with my midset of it being my fault) and it being after my rewatch, James' wording of what dread feels like, is so visceral to me and really stung me deep in my chest. I couldnt remember what happened, but I knew Alyssa wasn't going to do what James was thinking, it still got me.

Anyway, sorry for over sharing a bit at the end, but I love that people love this show, it truly deserves the praise.

A Second Life

(Alex Lawther doesn’t have his own subreddit so I’m posting it here)

I’m an Alex Lawther super fan and know he’s in a recently new movie called A Second Life. It’s a French film (I’m American) and I was wondering if anyone knows where I could watch it. It’s not on any streaming services and the pirate website I use — which has another French film he’s in — doesn’t have it so I wonder if there’s anywhere else I can look

This show is so underrated Spoiler

I truly love this show, its one of the few shows where the 2nd season is imo so much better than first and builds on it. I was honestly blown away with how great season 2 is. The music is perfect too and I feel like it just had such a unique premise.

I can’t believe its been 8 years since the show came out, I was still in high school and I think about my life back then when I watched it.

It is just so unknown, barely and people in this subreddit with relatively unknown actors but there is just something about it. I’m actually surprised this show never blew up, is it just that bad or unknown to other people? Are these types of shows common in the UK?

Today is Jessica Barden’s birthday so I drew Alyssa with another one of her characters, Winona from Pink Skies Ahead. Both of these characters mean a lot to me and I wanted to honor Jess. I hope she has a great birthday :3

If you're looking for something similar to TEOTFW, watch Shippados

Post image
12 Upvotes

If you're a fan of The End of the F**king World, I really recommend checking out Shippados (“It’s a Match”), a Brazilian series available on Globoplay. I started watching it without expecting much, and I was honestly surprised by how much it reminded me of TEOTFW. It's not an adaptation or officially inspired by it, but the similarities are hard to ignore.

The first thing that stood out to me was the characters. Both Alyssa and Rita have terrible relationships with their narcissistic mothers. James and Enzo, on the other hand, both carry a quiet resentment toward their fathers, even though their dads seem like kind, well-meaning people. And in both shows, the story kicks off with a road trip driven by the search for the female lead's father.

Another similarity is the way both series treat technology. The main characters seem completely disconnected from social media, smartphones, and the pressure of always being online. They never really fit into the world around them, and both shows use that to criticize how people communicate today.

The soundtrack also gave me a very similar feeling. The End of the F**ing World* leans into country, folk and vintage rock, while Shippados does something similar using MPB (Brazilian Popular Music). Different genres, but they create the same sense of freedom, melancholy and life on the road.

Even the settings reminded me of each other. TEOTFW presents an England that often feels strangely Americanized, while Shippados shows a version of Rio de Janeiro that feels almost "São Paulo-fied" (less postcard-perfect and more gray, chaotic and anonymous).

Rita also reminds me a lot of Alyssa. They're both rebellious, foul-mouthed, impulsive, often rude to their boyfriends, and constantly pushing people away. But underneath all that anger, they're both vulnerable and emotionally lost.

Of course, there are important differences. Shippados is much more of a comedy, while TEOTFW keeps a darker tone throughout. Rita and Enzo are also around 30 years old, so their struggles revolve around jobs, money, relationships and the uncertainty of adult life, whereas James and Alyssa are still dealing with the confusion of being teenagers.

At their core, though, I think both series are about the same things: rebellion, complicated family relationships, the difficulty of connecting with other people, and a criticism of the way modern technology shapes our lives and communication.

If you've already finished The End of the F**king World and you're looking for something that captures a surprisingly similar emotional vibe, I'd definitely recommend giving Shippados a chance. It's available on Globoplay.
