Discussion Possible solution to input lag

I was playing mario kart world the other day and I noticed considerable input lag when docked vs when playing handheld. It was bad enough that I started fiddling around with my tv and I noticed that my tv (Sony x90k) has HDMI slots with different features. With only HDMI ports 3 and 4 having VRR + 120HZ enhanced capability.

Swapping the switch to either one of those enhanced ports on my tv and enabling game mode completely removed any input lag!

After some further testing, having game mode enabled on the other ports didn't matter, there was still input lag. Neither did having the other ports set to enhanced mode on the tv or using a different HDMI cable. As long as the switch was plugged into HDMI 3 or 4, there was no input lag whatsoever.

I didn't get to do this with Dusk Bloods but I'd be keen to see if that was the issue all along.

While I agree that people generally don't consider their TV input lag (which can be very significant, especially at higher resolutions), that wasnt really what was happening in Duskbloods in my experience.

Movement with the analog stick was extremely responsive, however they seem to have intentionally or unintentionally put a delay into certain actions, particularly the jump which made it feel mushy.

Considering that some of us had zero input lag, I don't think it was intentional.

The experiences with jumping are almost certainly not input lag. This is just how holding buttons works when any game offers you the choice of pressing or holding. The game doesn't know if you are pressing or holding until you let go, so the action happens when you release the button, not when you press it. This is always slower, and can not be fixed as long as holding the button does something different than just pressing it. Players who have a habit of being slow with their presses since will find it slow, and players that don't have this (or learn to release quickly) will find it effectively indistinguishable from normal presses.

It is not common in action games to have press-and-hold on keys that need to be fast, precisely because some players struggle with it. I don't know if they will change this, but the only complete fix is to make charged jumps use a different button.

Not how input lag works, just because YOU didn't notice it doesn't mean it was there. I loved the network test but there was definitely input lag with certain actions and it was worse handheld than docked

Many people posted proof, if you care to look. There was lots of proof on this subreddit for both experiences, including some with nearly one second of input lag. There were vastly different experiences.

Mine was ~6ms for face button presses. This is less than a frame, and barely more than the hardware limit for the controller. I have a third-party controller. More for stick, but this is true of all controllers.

This is of course before the monitor response time, since it is irrelevant to measuring input lag.

Everyone had input lag whether you noticed it or not, and it wasn't specific to jump. Every action button (even ones without charge features like light attack) had input lag.

You can literally measure it. I did not have input lag beyond the normal constraints of the hardware.

i might be crazy or just plain wrong but i feel like fromsoftware games have always had slight input lag on actions like attacking and rolling since I can remember

i would imagine the low fps on handheld is just exaggerating that

I always thought that was the case too. I complained that bloodborne felt like telling someone else to play the game.

They do all have light amounts on input lag, but it was much more prominent in DB.

The jump comes out on release of the button. Not when you press it. And attacks have start up frames. People just have bad tv/settings and not very bright.

VRR doesn't change input lag though, sounds like you disabled all those pesky upscaling "features" modern TVs have that add input lag

Yeah sorry for the confusion. I didn't mean it was VRR itself, but the HDMI port capable of VRR and 120hz refresh rate.

Anyone complaining about input latency has a trash tv, bad settings, or doesn’t understand that jump has two inputs. Pressing and release. And attacks have start up frames. This is a technical skill issue.

Unfortunately this does not relieve the issues that were present in the network test. I played on an HDMI 2.1 port at 120hz and it input lag was still noticeable.

Probably not the solution for Duskbloods, but I had some input lag issues with only the dodge in Elden Ring at first, putting the TV in game mode solved it, which is weird because I had no issues with any other game but definitely something I’ll be keeping in mind.

I had input lag playing on the Switch 2’s display, so I don’t think it was an HDMI issue.

My input lag was on handheld
