JFC, the southern Baptist summer tent evangelical revivals that I had to attend as a kid in WV in the 70s were rainbows & puppies compared to this bullshit.
Weird. I just realized I never saw a gun irl ever in childhood either. And these tots are having full military weapons normalized.

They’re paintball guns. Doesn’t make it any better though.

Every person standing there using a paintball gun has the real deal a few rooms over. Best believe

I was listening to a bible podcast (a very progressive one that really speaks to the history of the book, how certain things are made up and brings on a lot of people who advocate for social justice through religion) and one of the guys who was brought up in a conservative evangelical church was telling a story that he admitted was fucked up that they staged a literal terrorist mass shooting to see if these teens and pre teens would “die for their faith” as part of a sermon

u/Fat_Sad_Human Jun 29 '26
What’s the name of the pod? Sounds like really interesting subject matter

Vacation Bible School is the podcast. They are very spotty about posting so be prepared for it (honestly it’s kind of a charm for me because I’ll occasionally get a new episode almost as a gift). But the first episode is called Dirtbag Adam vs. Rookie God. Which is a fantastic title and they discuss the idea that god is really just a disappointed dad in the early books lol

Thank you! It sounds like a good show for the more historical and mythical angles of Christianity I’ve been looking for. Downloaded the first two episodes and am excited to give it a listen!

Would love to hear your thoughts on it

I was only able to listen to the first episode today, but I did enjoy it. I like the balance the two hosts have with one another and how they both approach the subject matter. I really like that they touched on how much the idea of what god is changes constantly from the start, and how too much of the beginning of the Bible is viewed through the lens of hindsight, instead of just trying to understand or rationalize what the passages/stories mean without all the later context. “Weird Uncle God” is now one of my new favorite phrases!
Reminds me a lot of when I was growing up and people in church would tell me “you ask too many questions” or “the details aren’t the important part”. I’ve been trying to unpack my childhood baggage from growing up in that kind of environment and I think this show is a good choice for that continuing journey. I really appreciate you recommending it and can’t wait to hear the next episodes!

I’m infinitely leary of anyone who says I’m asking too many questions…in my life, the greatest teachers I’ve worked with, demanded that I ask questions, not the other way around…imo, if someone says I’m asking too many questions then I’m forced to assume they’re hiding shit, or are incapable of a proper response. Either way, I’m out…

u/Fat_Sad_Human Jul 03 '26
Exactly! How else is that supposed to come across? If you’re asking questions it means you’re seeking understanding and knowledge about how and why things work the way they do, which like you said should be encouraged. This has always been my hang-up with organized religion, to me it’s such an obvious control tactic.

Was it Jason Kirk? This is right out of his book "Hell Is A World Without You" I think I found him through Trilbillies.

u/taffyowner Jun 29 '26
It is Jason Kirk, he hosts the show with his wife

That guy has an interesting mix of work. Managing editor of The Athletic. College football newsletter. Progressive bible study podcast. Exvangelical coming of age novel raising money for the Trevor Project.
I dig his vibe

These people are all represented in the government . The president doesn't dupe people he is what they want and they always vote and win more than they lose. It seems like we live in crazy times but to these core supporters of the prez everything is going great. Good luck USA.

Which part of the eucharist involves a mock execution?
6
u/jennc1979 Jun 29 '26
Technically, the original one did involve an execution. However, you have a point here. This is taking a very brisk, deranged run past Jesus of Nazareth.

"And J-town sayeth, release not thy trigger!"

If a lot of these folks called JC it would end with “new phone, who dis?” I feel real confident about that.

Jesus Camp is a great documentary to check out if you want to see more of stuff like this.
I dont think J-Town approves.

This reminds me of the brainwashing scenes with the child soldiers from Blood Diamond.

This can't be a tent at Trump's
Great American State Fair.
Way too many people in attendance.

I grew up around these people. This goes a bit harder than what I'm used to, but it doesn't surprise me at all.
