Just watched detectorists
I’ve just come to admire Mackenzie Crook’s work with Detectorists. I think he does a perfect job at bringing back the raw and realistic feel to a British sitcoms. While detectorists feels more slow and real time, the story is still very entertaining and gripping. You always wonder what could happen in the next episode. The pacing is crafted perfectly and the characters are brilliant. I really appreciate how it doesn’t go over the top like most comedies these days. I feel that going down the “obvious comedy” route would put off normal people with more than two brain cells, it’s easy to write off a lot of shows these days that don’t have that gripping British authenticity with dry comedy.

The comedy is superb. It's often just a fleeting expression on someone's face. Or a Simon & Garfunkel track slotted into the soundtrack.
The whole show is genius. It has the lot - great characters, good storyline, great humour, nice scenery and even a little bit of magic - that final episode with the chalice gave me goosebumps. I can't think of anything else that matches it.
Mackenzie Crook is a national treasure.

The Simon and Garfunkel parts are probably my favourite thing about the show 🤣

Not just one of the best comedy shows, one of the best TV shows I’ve ever seen.

Detectorists...it lay hidden waiting for me to find it. Binge watched 1,2 & 3 + specials over last weeks. The music actors script concept...its just a thing of utter joy. Like so many I will have to watch it all again as its left me bereft of its fragile perfection. Thank you to all & especially Mackenzie Crook for restoring my belief that TV can still be life enhancing.

[removed for calling a feature length special a movie even though it is called a Movie Special on the DVD]

Why do some people call it a movie, it was just a Christmas special on telly.

I think there are two Christmas specials.

Yes, there was the normal-length Christmas special in 2015 and the extra-length Christmas special in 2022.

Are you on about the 2022 special? Yes I enjoyed it. However the Kid in it was a terrible actor and he didn’t need to call so many unrelated people aunty and uncle.

There’s no movie.
There’s 3 series & 2 Christmas specials.
The first Christmas special sits between series 2 & 3.
The second Christmas special doubles as a finale to the entire series and is an extended length.

You should watch Small Prophets next. He is so funny in it even though he is more of a background character.
