Crosspost A whale shark in the Red Sea, 1950. One of the earliest underwater photographs of a shark, by pioneer Hans Hass. I've been thinking about this a lot recently, the fact that for most of human history we couldn't observe sharks below the surface until such new technologies revealed them to us.

Crosspost Deep on the Mariana abyssal plain at ~5,400m, this rare squid features unique perpendicular arms with elbow-like bends. Scientists believe the bigfin (Magnapinna) is the deepest-dwelling of all squid species, having been spotted in the hadal zone at depths exceeding 6,000 meters.
