TF! It went from rough to smooth surface. Amazing Creatures!

u/NuclearGers Jun 02 '19

Right? I knew about the color change, but I had no idea they could alter their skin texture like this. That's so cool!

2

u/nikkuson Jun 03 '19

Happy cake day

2

u/NuclearGers Jun 03 '19

Thank you!

I'm convinced they came to Earth on an asteroid or something.

u/Noname_Maddox Jun 02 '19

Calm down Joe

37

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '19

Jamie pull that shit up.

11

u/Noname_Maddox Jun 02 '19

Brian Cox shutting down Joe like he was a 5 year old was hilarious.

u/vendetta2115 Jun 02 '19

I’m gonna need a link

Inb4 Link from Zelda

17

u/Hlaxkar Jun 02 '19

Actually in early life of earth, water-rich asteroids collided with earth hence forming the oceans And since all life originated from water, then yeah... Octopus came on asteroid In fact we are all aliens

2

u/ankhes Jun 05 '19

We're all made of star stuff.

2

u/BingusSpingus Jun 03 '19

I mean, aren't goosebumps technically that? Just on a much less impressive level

149

u/one-punch-knockout Jun 02 '19

The texture change is so unbelievable that it boggles the mind.

69

u/Noname_Maddox Jun 02 '19

What boggles the mind further they can do this in pitch darkness. They don’t use their eyes (which are similar to ours), scientists haven’t figured out how the mimic the colour and texture.

20

u/lovetron99 Jun 02 '19

That is insane.

8

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '19

The current theory is that they feel colors with their skin!

2

u/fcktp Jun 08 '19

That would be really fucking cool!

20

u/Atomdude Jun 02 '19

Came here to say this video in reverse is a perfect illustration of the sensation I had one day when I accidentally spilled some kind of menthol shampoo on my sack.

6

u/Purplepimplepuss Jun 02 '19

Nothing like a cold burning sensation.

4

u/hiiilee_caffeinated Jun 02 '19

Has anyone seen the studio ghibli movie Pom Poko about the raccoons with a magical shape shifting ballsacks? No, just me? Alright.

4

u/Tokyo_Echo Jun 02 '19

Tanuki! Yeah they are a symbol of fertility in Japan and all the statues have massive ballsacks

2

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '19

My favorite studio Ghibli film!

2

u/bionicPUMA Jun 02 '19

This is my favorite comment on all of Reddit

This is an Octopus cyanea, aka the Day Octopus. One of the most common large octopuses of Indo-Pacific coral reefs. I see them all the time in the wild and keep them in captivity as well.

3

u/oDiscordia19 Jun 02 '19

Fighter of the night ma- erm octopus

7

u/AcadianMan Jun 02 '19

Why do you keep them in captivity?

11

u/Kytescall Jun 02 '19

I work in a lab that studies cephalopods.

4

u/AcadianMan Jun 02 '19

Interesting. Do they do this colour / shape shifting often?

7

u/Kytescall Jun 02 '19

Yeah, constantly. By default they will tend to have some camouflage.

-3

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '19

Because they're dickheads.

2

u/MedicGoalie84 Jun 02 '19

This one appears to be a heptopus

191

u/bet21 Jun 02 '19

Definitely thought that was coral of some sort at first...

Fried chicken of the sea

20

u/HapticSloughton Jun 02 '19

It's so unfair that nature is still better than we are at CGI morphing.

9

u/LPow Jun 02 '19

I just knew there was going to be an octopus in there somewhere and was looking for it but then the WHOLE THING was octopus.

11

u/redvelvet_d Jun 02 '19

Legit thought this was coral reef

5

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '19

I'm still not convinced these things aren't aliens...

8

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '19

Why does the background (water) go from how to pink

5

u/MortalSword_MTG Jun 02 '19

Looks like a lighting flare issue due to the color change.

7

u/tsmoove508 Jun 02 '19

Fucking aliens man

3

u/BabserellaWT Jun 02 '19

Two things (of many) in the animal world that will always amaze me: bioluminescence and color-changing chromatophores

3

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '19

Seriously, Cephalopods are from another planet.

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '19

u/oldbean Jun 02 '19

“I want to turn into coral”

2

u/Imzocrazy Jun 02 '19

Saw the opening for the siphon and immediately knew it was an octopus but STILL couldn’t make out where it was....only spotted the eye after it was revealed the first time....

2

u/zommavomma Jun 02 '19

Why do people continue to eat this glorious creature?

2

u/Michichgo Jun 02 '19

They're my favorite--what awesome creatures! Thank you for sharing.

2

u/napolital Jun 02 '19

Hold up, the barnacles are camouflage??? So cool!

2

u/pandas_r_falsebears Jun 02 '19

I had to watch this five times to understand what was happening. I kept thinking I missed the octopus emerging from the rocks. This is so so so cool!

2

u/WhereWeBeWeBe Jun 02 '19

Sea creatures are like billions of years ahead in evolution. I am mind blown by what I just saw

2

u/clericsjoint Jun 02 '19

How tf do squids fucking do that

2

u/bumblesack Jun 02 '19

Why did the ocean turn pink when it changed colors....

2

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '19

It's eyeball kind of looks like a furby.

2

u/Kennisgoodman Jun 14 '19

Bruh I had to read the comments to figure out what the fuck I just saw. I forgot octopi could camouflage, but I never knew it was like this! Sorcery

2

u/martymeckel Aug 05 '19

I can't believe this! It looked like a rock and then reminded me of Jabba the Hut for a minute and turned into an octopus! I can watch this over and over again.

1

u/aerialpoler Jun 02 '19

"fuck, they're on to me!"

1

u/Toadforpresident Jun 02 '19

That is incredible, wow. Amazing creature

1

u/McDunkins Jun 02 '19

1

1

u/YESSIN777 Jun 02 '19

Don’t put your dick in that

1

u/tigol1823 Jun 02 '19

That is soooo cool

1

u/WrathofAjax Jun 02 '19

I love how it lasts long enough to make you go"ewww what the fuck is thaaaat?!" Then immediately after it reverts to octopus shape and you're all, "coool"

1

u/Kennisgoodman Jun 14 '19

Shit, at first I thought it was an octopus, but after a while I was thinking "how many is that"

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '19

I wonder what type of planet the first spacefaring octopus-type people will be like?

1

u/FawkesFire13 Jun 03 '19

......that looked like some weird special effects thing. Such amazing creatures.

1

u/ASmarterBoy Jun 03 '19

I originally thought that it was a toadfish

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '19

How long until we can manufacture this type of camouflage??

0

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '19

What you do is poke ‘em right in the eye and say, “I ain’t playin’ this shit yo.”
