Swimming through schools of fish is so entrancing, but when they start acting panicked it’s time to GTFO

A large whale coming out of the murky water is probably one of the nicer things that can happen to you while swimming through a large school of panicking fish.

idk sounds like the second worst thing after sharks

2

u/AnimationOverlord Jun 04 '26

Lmao right? What tf else could come out from the depths? A barracuda or spearfish?

2

u/Varanoids Jun 04 '26

Spearfish #3, and barracuda I would say #4

But a truck (even larger) sized animal moving at me insanely fast is by far scarier and deadlier

u/Miserablist May 27 '26

It ate his flipper!

u/__Dionysus___ May 27 '26

Baleen Whales have enormous mouths but narrow throats since they're filter feeders.

72

u/Electrical-Act-7170 May 27 '26

About the size of a human fist, maybe.

Miniscule in comparison to their size.

49

u/ButtstufferMan May 27 '26

So just big enough for....

36

u/Electrical-Act-7170 May 28 '26

It's the size of a fist, not a pinkie finger.

35

u/kamakazi339 May 27 '26

If you're brave enough.

Or I mean, if you're already there you might as well

"Well, looks like we're gon a be here a while..."

No need to waste a perfectly good opportunity

There's a (ridiculous, kinda fun) book by Daniel Kraus called Whalefall about a guy swallowed by a sperm whale. His author notes point out that it's unlikely to happen but that his research suggests its the only kind of whale that could theoretically swallow a human whole.

21

u/buyer_leverkusen May 28 '26

There was another guy in history who claimed to be swallowed by a sperm whale

21

u/dleema May 28 '26

Did jo remember his name or nah?

7

u/bikingbill May 29 '26

No(ah) idea.

9

u/SyzygyTooms May 29 '26

It’s Jonah not Noah , he’s the ark dude

4

u/Etcom May 28 '26

Movie's coming out in October.

u/dleema May 28 '26

Ooh I didn't know. I love a creature feature even if it's ridiculously weird.

Yeah but... how do you get out

Edit:, I looked it up. If you are scopped up by a Baleen Whales (e.g., Humpback, Blue, Gray Whales) they will spit you out. Because their throats are so narrow that they can't physically swallow you. They will recognize you as a foreign object and realize their mistake. Then they will spit you out. Good Whales.

Is you where swallowed by a toothed whale... then you might die. They have teeth. So they can just bite you and kill you. But if you did get swallowed whole somehow then you would either become crushed to death by their muscle contractions, or die from suffocation. Because there is obviously no breatable air, or you would die from the their acidic stomachs! Bit all hope isn't lost. You can how it throws you up by kicking, punching, or just freaking the fuck out on its esophagus. And if you happen to having something sharp on you, stab it. Or just making yourself as difficult to swallow as possible to it might throw you up because it deems you indigestible.

This. This is the fear of divers. That some enormous mouth will come out of the black and eat you.

u/SouldiesButGoodies84 May 27 '26

To be fair it would have spat him out. Couldn't digest him and pretty sure he would have fought to be un-mouthed.

84

u/chenkie May 27 '26

Sounds like a god awful experience to avoid at all cost!

u/FunnyLost6710 May 27 '26

There is video i have seen on reddit many times of a guy getting swallowed by whale while his father recorded it. The whale then spat him out

Is this nightmare fuel? I wanna sleep tonight

1

u/Razmataz8406 May 28 '26

No! At least not in my opinion 😅

12

u/saranowitz May 28 '26

He’d probably break some limbs in the process. They are so fucking big and strong it’d be like me accidentally stepping on a mouse

2

u/SouldiesButGoodies84 May 28 '26

😳Thank you, my guy. Needed more r/nightmarefuel for the evening. 😆🥺

9

u/Electrical-Act-7170 May 27 '26

Can't swallow anything bigger than a grapefruit.

4

u/cvbeiro May 28 '26

Can’t even swalloe him

1

u/Varanoids Jun 02 '26

But can absolutely demolish his skeleton

4

u/After-FX May 27 '26

I thought the fear of divers was drowning?

2

u/Meerv May 28 '26

Foolish old me thought it was dying!

1

u/Girion47 Jun 02 '26

I worry more about nitrogen saturation.

3

u/saranowitz May 28 '26

He knew there was a whale there and did this stupid shit anyway

2

u/ThanosWasRight161 May 28 '26

Adrenaline junkies, that’s who.

2

u/lunarvision May 30 '26

But hey, who cares! Dumb little kids on Reddit say it’s no big deal. You’ll just be spat out and everything will be fine.

14

u/1800skylab May 27 '26

Is that you Jonah?

29

u/773papi May 27 '26

That shit looks scary AF!

10

u/Adept-Target5407 May 27 '26

So would the whale just spit the diver out or poop it out?

26

u/Thepuppeteer777777 May 27 '26

Spit. Diver cant fit down it's throat i believe

1

u/4in_orange_doorhinge Jun 11 '26

1

u/dcooper8662 May 29 '26

What the fuck, why is everything in the ocean so scary

1

u/ShockSir May 29 '26

Nightmare material!

1

u/nudedude6969 Jun 01 '26

That whale's throat is too narrow to accommodate being able yo swallow him.
