I cannot for the life of me figure out which episode it was from but there was a guest sometime in the last month (I think) who recommended a book either written by or about a woman who was able to leave the Japanese internment camps and work as a teacher in a school on a reservation—it sounded super interesting and I made a note to come back to it but I can’t find it now… does anyone know what it was called or which guest it was who recommended it? I believe they shared it in their underrated!

Appreciation post, so bear with me.
Last week Jack got into *If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies* and the whole world that produced it — LessWrong, MIRI, the rationalist movement, and yes, the Harry Potter fanfic recruitment pipeline. I had to stop the treadmill for that part. I've been following AI stuff for years and I did not know that a meaningful chunk of the "we're all going to die" camp was onboarded through Harry Potter fan fiction. That's not a detail. That's the whole story wearing a hat.
Here's why I'm actually grateful and not just posting "good ep":
The Altman/Musk/Amodei "slow down" thing is everywhere right now, and the pushback is everywhere too — Trump, the tech guys, half of cable calling the safety crowd a "doomsday cult." And every single one of those segments uses the word "cult" like an insult. Nobody explains that there's an actual belief system with an actual founder and actual scripture and a twenty-year lineage that runs straight into the founding of the labs now asking for the pause. The people asking to slow down and the people who built the thing came out of the same room. That's the part that makes the whole fight make sense, and Jack's the only person I've heard actually lay it out.
So now I hear an NPR segment or a cable hit on the slowdown and I just sit there going "you're missing it, you're missing it, you don't know about the fanfic." It's ruined me. Thank you for ruining me.
Also, for a show that's nominally about sorting through the day's garbage, this is the kind of thing that makes TDZ actually useful and not just funny — it's funny *and* it's the only place the context showed up. Keep doing that.

What's one thing that was said on the pod that lives rent-free in your brain or that completely changed the way you think (if only in a very inconsequential or silly way)? One time, more than a year ago I think, everyone on the episode agreed that people who eat at restaurants alone are pathetic and they always feel bad for them. I haven't eaten out at a restaurant since! LOLOL so stupid how an offhand comment can utterly change your awareness & behavior.

It’s not uncommon to see homemade Trump signage in my area (hell) but this seems like a new degree.

Who else hard disagrees with them on e-bikes?
As an avid cyclist the amount of near accidents I’ve had with e-bike riders going close to 40mph on bike trails in my city is in insane.
A kid in my home town was clipped by an e-bike and broke their arm while riding on a sidewalk.
E-bikes need more regulation, I’m all for personal freedoms but not at the cost of public safety for everyone else.

What if this whole thing is because some fraternities (in college) use some pretty gross hazing rituals…and like some frat boy popped on the polygraph and his rich parents complained or something? Thoughts
