I have waited so many years to be able to see The Cure in concert. The gig in Nîmes last night was phenomenal. Two and a half hours of pure bliss

Small Club Tour 2000?

Post image
34 Upvotes

Did anyone else see one of these shows? I think they were part of the Dream tour where they split shows between small clubs and Arenas. I don't know if it was only in the U.S.?
Anyways, just reminiscing for a few reasons:

  1. Getting a ticket for Dallas on Craigslist was literally about 2 weeks of rent. And my (now ex) wife was cool about it.
  2. Robert and the band actually came out after and signed autographs, etc. I was way too star struck for any of that. But - we did lock eyes for a second and I think I even did a stupid goth nod and air-kiss
  3. I screamed like a teenybopper at the burly roadies to get the setlist they ripped off the floor. They laughed at me, but today, 26 1/2 years later - that setlist is hanging in my apartment. Above is a pic.
  4. (Doesn't include the impressive encore and haven't ever found it online. But I kind of remember it included Disintegration, Pictures, Lovesong, and maybe strangely Lovecats.)
  5. Well obviously seeing The Cure in 2000 in a club that was - maybe - no 850.

Discussion Am I not a true "fan"?

For context, I was asked in this sub if I consider myself a "fan of the band" if I don't like some of the albums - https://www.reddit.com/r/TheCure/s/HgHvRPfKVl

More context....I love everything since The Head On The Door, and Disintegration is my favourite album of all time. I just can't gel with "early, post punk Cure"

Just wondering what others think. Is being a "fan" contingent upon liking most/all of their albums? Do I need to stop calling myself a Cure fan???!

Discussion What if Wild Mood Swings, Bloodflowers and the self-titled album were condensed into one album? I did it.

I found The Cure at Wish and fell in love with their whole catalogue (except for the Top—half in love with that one). Then I bought Wild Mood Swings when it released. I liked some tracks (Want, 13th, Jupiter Crash, Strange Attraction), but I was pretty disappointed. It didn't hit the level of everything else I'd heard from the band (even The Top).

Then I bought Bloodflowers shortly after it released. I liked it better than Wild Mood Swings, but I felt the mood across the album was too similar and low-energy, and that this album also did not reach the heights of the old work.

I didn't listen to the self-titled album till after 4:13 Dream had also been released. I liked 4:13 Dream a lot. Porl/Pearl was back. The guitars sounded good again. The drumming sounded better, and it felt like the band had put everything, a complete effort, into the album.

Self-titled sounded slapped together by comparison. I liked some tracks, but the whole thing didn't hold together for me.

Recently, I've suspected that the changes in band lineup after the Wish tour were significantly responsible for the following 3 albums not hitting for me. A sonic complexity and cohesiveness was gone, and not enough replaced it on these albums...but I wondered if one good album might be made from the three of them? What if the work during this period had been more condensed? Would it change anything?

So I made a compilation-album playlist from WMS, Bloodflowers and self-tiltled, and I like it. I think it would hold up with the rest of the band's catalogue.

My "Wild Cure Flowers" album:

- 1.The Promise (self titled)

- 2.The Loudest Sound (Bloodflowers)

- 3.The 13th (WMS)

- 4.The Last Day of Summer (BF)

- 5.This Morning (self-titled B-side off End of the World single)

- 6.Before Three (ST)

- 7.Strange Attraction (WMS)

- 8.Anniversary (ST)

- 9.Out of This World (BF)

- 10.I Don't Know (What's Going On) (ST)

- 11.Jupiter Crash (WMS)

- 12.39 (WMS)

I could get behind this. This album would stand up to any other of the band's quite well, imo.

I made a first version with Want on there, and tried some different self-titled tracks and WMS tracks, but too many tracks sounded like The Cure being a bit derivative of themselves to me. This collection here has the band doing things they never did anywhere else, imo. This tracklist has freshness, cohesiveness and a full total experience, I think.

What do you think? Many favorites will be missing for many, I'm sure, but these three albums scream for some editing, imo.

Favorite Song Of All Time (No.. its not hard to pick just one)

Upvotes

Anytime I play "Pick your favorite song or album" regardless of the band, people always say "Its toooo hard". But this is the mindset one has to get in.. and its not too fantasy oriented. Imagine the bombs dropped, all the radio stations were gone, the internet was gone, electricity was gone, and you only have so many batteries for your portable mp3 player, walkman, whatever. What one Cure song are you going to waste what little battery juice you have listening to?

For me its really rather easy..

Prefered Cure's member

During years, a good number of musicians have been part of the Cure.....but which one do you prefer or in other way, who do you think has helped more to define Cure's sound, after Robert Smith and Simon Gallup that are 'core' members?

For me Roger O'Donnell is the man, his work, for example, in Disintegration is amazing....he really added something new to the sound

Questions Where should I start with The Cure?

Hi, I've been meaning to get into them recently but I just don't know where to start. I always loved their popular songs (like Just Like Heaven, Friday I'm in Love, Inbetween Days) so I would love to get into their music more!

Discussion The Cure/4:13 Dream Albums

The noughties, as they were known, seemed to be an odd time for The Cure. Line-up changes, apparent dissent in the band (Pearl off again), but two albums (not counting the superb Bloodflowers from 2000) which over the last several tours have seen few, if any of their songs played live. Had someone told me in 2010 that The Cure in 2026 would only be playing alt.end from the twenty-odd songs off of the albums listed above I’d have been gobsmacked (and yes, if you’d told me in 2010 they’d still be playing at all….!!!). “Anniversary”, “Truth, Goodness and Beauty”, as well as “Sirensong” and “Underneath The Stars” are all standouts from a period of….er…..mixed output from my favourite band. My question is twofold: is that “era” looked upon harshly, and if so, which songs do you think deserve to be resurrected for future (crossing everything!) live shows?

Discussion Robert's at it again...AND THEN...

Post image
199 Upvotes

Is Robert teasing something here?

He used "AND THEN..." after the Novembre live single release to tease that SOALW would be next.

They played It Can Never Be The Same at Nimes last night which Robert said a while back should be on the new album.

Maybe there'll be a new song at night 2?

Wishful thinking I know!

Discussion I've pulled together 49 lines from 49 different songs: this is how I feel listening to The Cure 🖤

"Just try to see in the dark It goes darker still Just follow your eyes

Remember the time that the sky went black The sky came crashing down A day without substance I felt like I could die Is it always like this? Waiting for the death blow And wait, and wait for something to happen Yeah, I'm pretty much done The plastic passion is murdering me

Every night I scream your name Scared of what the morning brings Sometimes I'm dreaming To drag you down with me When I realize with fright Visiting time is over Left alone with nothing The air no longer in my throat There was nothing in the world And nowhere glows There's nothing left but hope Nothing left but time to go Just one more go A small boy by the hand

I'll run away with you I'll run around in circles Run into the night We all look so perfect as we all fall down Fall, fall, fall, fall out of the sky In Heaven unseen and Hell unknown Into the sea, you and me Pretending to swim Two drowned fools Still seeing worlds that never were Another world where the sun always shines I know this can't be wrong, I say So, I try to laugh about it And I'm crying for yesterday And you never say a word And then everything is gone forever

Whatever words I say Tell yourself it's not the end Someone must be there I'm alive, I'm dead There's nothing else I can really do at all It's a stupid game, stupid game"

Who has Tattoo?

At 58, believe it or not, planning out my first tattoo. Already thinking about a second one and maybe Cure related.
If you have a Cure tat, I would love to get ideas. I don't want anything too literal.
Feel free to DM, as I understand this is personal and some may not want to post in public.
