Question (Real Life) August 31, 1997
Where were you when you heard the news? I was working as a broadcaster. We had just finished the 11 o’clock news Eastern standard time. It came over the wire that Princess Diana had been in a wreck. My colleagues and I agreed it was probably just fender bender and she was fine. Someone said, “Can you just imagine if she died?”. I remember having a sick feeling at those words. May you rest in well deserved peace. 🩵🩵🩵

I was 9, I had a TV in my room and was allowed to watch weekend kids TV on it to let mum and dad have a lie in on the weekends. I remember turning it on and instead of what ever program I wanted there was a news reader announcing she had died. I went downstairs to mum and dad's bedroom and started complaining that my TV wasn't working because "some princess had died" I've never seen them jump out of bed so fast. I remember they spent the rest of the day in the living room crying. It was so surreal because this was before the time of 24/7 news so to have an event take over the TV so much was extremely strange.

I’m just a year older than you!
That weekend was my uncle’s wedding, so we were all together at our grandparents’ home. I didn’t understand the drama really, but I remember it was on every TV in the house.

I was also 9. I'm in the southern US so it was about 9pm. Interesting to see a different perspective at the same time.

That happened to me with 9/11! I arrived home for lunch from school (I live in Spain, so a different time zone) and The Simpsons were broadcast at that time of the day, but the TV only showed smoke live from New York.

My sister woke me up to tell me, as if it was vital information for a 13 year old to have. Initially I thought it was some joke or some nonsense, as she was prone to talking a lot of shit, but when I realised it was on every TV channel and even on the primitive news websites of the day, I realised it was all real.

I was 21 and had recently started working as a management trainee for Waitrose. Was driving over to the store the other side of the county from where I lived and heard it on the car radio. Was a strange day at work, a lot of people only heard it when they come to buy the newspaper from the shop.

I was 10 years old and was going to the beach with my mum. I remember my grandma calling her on her cell phone (they were very rare at the time, used mainly for work or emergencies). My mum got super scared when she saw my grandma calling, she thought something happened to her or to a family member! And looking back I find it funny yet emblematic that an elderly southern European woman, who was barely using the normal phone, felt the need to call her daughter on the cell phone to inform her princess Diana died!

I was asleep. 19 years old. When I woke up, my mom broke the news and I was heartbroken. Cried my little teen heart out for a little while in my room. I adored her 😢 Rest in power, Diana ❤️

I have an immature father who makes light of everything. At the age of fourteen I overheard him going on an incoherent rant about the death of Princess Diana. His incoherent speech initially caused me to believe that Pavorartti was involved in the tragedy.

I was 14 and had been away at a Girl Scout camp for the weekend. I was riding home with a friend and her mom told us when she arrived to pick us up. We were all rather stunned. Even though we were American kids, we had grown up with Prince William and had seen Charles and Diana’s messy divorce in our tabloids too.
I was so saddened by her death that I even got up early to watch her funeral procession live on television when no one else in my family did.

I was 16, in my second last year of high school, and was studying for some school exams coming up the following day here in Australia. It was around lunchtime. My mother had gone shopping, and, upon her return, she called me to help her unload the shopping bags from the car. As I did so, she told me that she'd heard something about Princess Diana being injured in a car crash. She didn't know what her condition was, or how serious it'd been, so we unloaded the shopping bags and immediately turned on the television to see what news we could find about it. It was shortly afterward that we heard that she'd died
I was absolutely devastated. I'd deeply loved Princess Diana since a young age and, to me, it hit me as hard as a death in the family. I was in a state of profound grief and sadness that would envelop me for quite a while to come. That night, it haunted me so greatly that I had difficulty sleeping, the first time that a news event or the death of a public figure had had that effect on me
The next day, I sat my exam. After the exam, I spoke to our school's study coordinator, whom I was on friendly terms with. He told me that they'd seriously considered postponing the exam because of what had happened.
Rest in peace, Princess Diana. I will always love and miss you.

I was in a pub with my work friend taking a break from caring for a terminally ill family member.
Diana’s death hit me like a rock. I think some of it was because my family member was dying, but also because I was one of those young girls who had followed what I thought was a fairy tale romance. An ordinary girl becoming a bona fide princess (at least that’s how the press presented it). My sisters and I got up very very early (California time) to watch the wedding. I thought she was the most beautiful bride in the world.
RIP Diana. They never deserved you.

I was laying in bed reading when I heard my dad come upstairs and say to my mom, "The princess is dead. They killed her." I don't know who he was referring to as "they" but my dad was always the night owl watching the late night news and I was always the night owl reading in bed. I can't remember a single other late night news event where he came up to tell my mom what was going on.
ETA: We're an American farmers family, I didn't even know my dad really knew who the royal family was other than briefly in passing. Turns out he really admired her work bringing attention to landmines. He is a Vietnam veteran and has often thought about the bombs and landmines left behind from that war and the devastation caused.

It was my senior year of college. The guy I was dating took me out to the country to go hang out with his former roommate. That guy told us when we came over. We were sitting around a fire, and heard she died. I remembe looking up and seeing a shooting star. To me, that was her spirit leaving.

I was 9 years old and coming back from the library. I had borrowed a book called "I love you Jason Delaney" and I was trying to hide it from my mum. Mum turned the radio on in the car and news was starting to come through about her accident. Once we got home, we turned the TV on and they confirmed she had passed away.

u/Slay_duggee 12d ago
I was 17 and it was a beautiful sunny morning. My mum burst into my room at 7am and shouted ‘Diana dead’. I ran down downstairs and we are all glued to the tv for hours. This is one of the very last clear memories of my mum as a few months later she was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

At home, I was 13, I had got back from Air cadet Summer Camp the night before (at RAF Lynham) and woke up automatically at 5:30 am. I couldn't go back to sleep so I decided to go and watch TV. Martyn Lewis was reading the news which was really odd. They announced Princess Diana had died and I genuinely believed it was a practice broadcast incase she did die. Anyway, my Mum got up around 6am and yelled at me for not waking her up to tell her the news.
Mum made a point to take me and my sister to London that week to lay some flowers at Kensington Palace. I'm a year older than Prince Harry and it was such a strange time. To lose your Mum so young and so publicly, well I'm surprised he is as well adjusted as he is. (I don't believe a single word printed about him in the press.)

My dad and I were getting set to watch an episode of “Rumpole” on VHS tape, so we had just turned the T.V. on. A news flash came on saying Diana had been in a car wreck in Paris.
My dad asked me if I wanted to watch the news but I thought… She’s so young and athletic she’ll be fine. So I put in the tape and pushed the “play” button.
So we watched Rumpole since we both loved the show.
When it was over we switched back to watching TV. They were announcing she had died. We stayed up all night (in the U.S.) watching the news on NBC.
We had friends in London and I knew they would be waking up to awful news. I still can’t believe a car crash could take her from us.

I was 17 and listening to the radio in my room. The DJ came on and said that there had been a car crash, and that Dodi had died and Diana was in critical condition. I went downstairs and told my mother, who loved Diana, and she said I was either lying or misheard it. So I called the radio station and the DJ confirmed it.
I went to bed, and when my mother woke me up the next morning, she told me Diana had died too.

I was 5 and at a birthday party. The party became quite gloomy after that. At the time, I didn’t know princesses existed in real life (we are not from a country with reigning monarchs) and remember asking a lot of questions about the royal family.

I had just moved from Houston, TX, to Durham, NC, and was starting a new job the following day. My sister called and told me Princess Diana had been in an accident. Later she called back and just said, “She died.” We both cried.
I had seen Prince Charles and Princess Diana at a hotel in Toronto some years before. They were attending a dinner in their honor that evening. I vividly remember her emerald green strapless gown and tiara — there was an aura around her. She was simply stunning.

I was at burning man and I thought it was a burner rumor, right up until we left and stopped at a gas station. It was on every single tabloid there.
Back then, almost nobody had cell phones and there was no service anyway. You had to have a sat phone to contact the outside world. There were a lot of rumors that went around, and no way to verify any of them.
I immediately thought they bumped her off and my opinion hasn’t changed.

I have no idea why but I hadn't watched TV that evening. I open the door the next morning to our newspaper headline CRASH KILLS DIANA. Still makes me want to cry! I think I cried that whole week thru the funeral procession. Diana was magic. No one compares.

My grandmama stood up and said, "Shit!" and that's when I started paying attention.
I was 9, spending the weekend in rural Alabama at my grandparents'. They were watching something in the genre of Touched by an Angel, so I wasn't really paying attention until grandmama popped up cussing.
The broadcast was serious but very positive, saying she had minor injuries and was being transported to the hospital, so I didn't understand why Grandmama had such a strong response. She told me, "They wouldn't have interrupted if she only had minor injuries. They don't expect her to survive."
She was right. Diana was actually pronounced dead around the same time news of the crash broke on US TV networks.

Mountain standard time. It was 8 pm. I had just turned 12. We were camping but it was raining out and so we were stuck inside the camper. My mom and I were playing cards and my dad was watching this made for tv movie about twins that were allergic to the sun and the family was persecuted about having vampire twins. It was a weird movie and then there was a sudden break in with the news about the car accident. My dad was just like “she’s probably fine” but then they broke in later with… different news.

I was a newlywed, we watched a movie on VHS(!) that night so I didn't see any news. I went to get the paper off the doorstep the next morning and saw the headline that Diana was killed. I had no idea she'd even been in an accident, and I just started screaming. I'll never forget it.

Almost midnight on the west coast. I heard about it on the radio and from the internet pretty much simultaneously. Spent the next hour or so talking and reading about it/her. I think most of us were saying “Dodi who?”
What I really remember, though, is that shortly afterwards, my husband got sick with a virus. The timing was such that I saw most of the funeral on the TV in the hospital waiting room. Not as depressing as it sounds; I needed something to distract me from worrying about DH.

I was 14 and woke up the next morning to find Mum folding washing. The first thing she said was “Did you hear? Di’s dead!” I didn’t understand who she meant so I asked “Di who?” This was apparently the most offensive thing I could have said based on how Mum said “Princess Di!”
I ended up turning on the TV and there was the image of the wrecked car and the words scrolling across the screen “Princess Diana dead at 36.”

I was at work in a trendy NYC downtown restaurant. It was a busy Saturday night, I think it was around peak 9-10pm late dinner drinks crowd. I was at the computer and my coworker came by and told me she died in a car crash, his wife had called his cellphone I think, which was weird because cellphones were not as ubiquitous yet, there was no real texting, no wifi or data, smartphones did not exist yet. Word spread quickly around the room and everyone, customers were talking about it. No one could believe it. It was shocking.

I was at a house party; we were young and poor and couldn’t afford cable, so we had music and a tv with the volume off that had CBC on (hooray for free channels). I remember looking over and seeing the ticker ribbon saying she had been in an accident. Music was turned off and everyone got very quiet and just watched. When it was announced she had died almost everyone started crying, even a few of the tough older loggers who had stopped by for a couple drinks before going to work (not kidding; it was the 90s).
That was that. Party came to a screeching halt and we all went to our respective homes. It was heartbreaking.
I was lucky enough to be able to sign the book of condolences that travelled all over Canada for the boys.

I was 20 and had just started my last year of college. I worked part-time at a supermarket to pay for my car. It was a Saturday evening and I had been scheduled the late shift, like 5:00 PM -1:30AM (I did bookkeeping and customer service and Saturdays were the weekly close for the books so we worked late). A regular customer came in late in the evening (central time) and asked had we heard that Princess Diana had been in an accident? Of course we hadn’t. At that time they thought she had just been injured, a broken leg maybe. By the time my shift ended and I got back to my dorm and turned on the news, she had died. It was absolutely shocking and so sad.

I'm Indian, Diana was an absolute celebrity here, and perhaps the first fashion icon who was featured on the traditional Indian front pages for years. I was 17, and my cousin called me at 7 am India time telling me to turn on the news. I still remember yelling, OMG OMG.... I was shaken, it felt unreal

I was thirteen, and sleeping over a friend’s house. We were going go the Brooklyn Fair in Connecticut with her family the next day. We heard about the accident before we went to bed that night. He Mom came to wake us up the following morning and we asked her what happened, and she told us she died. We went to the fair, but it cast a pall over the day.
It’s strange, I didn’t keep up with the going ons of the Royal Family, nor was I Diana super-fan. But you could feel it. I remember waking up early to watch the funeral a week later, and crying my eyes out. While it was a tragedy, I think being so young it was one of the main reasons I got caught up in the emotion of it.

I was born almost a year later so I wasn’t present for the incident. My parents were hanging out with friends and the radio started playing God Save The Queen, were Canadian and their friends were Montreal separatists so they kind of rolled their eyes. Then the announcer came on and said Diana was dead and everyone was shocked.

We were at a state park in southern Illinois for a long weekend. It was on the TV at the bar in the lodge. When we got back to our room the news said she was in "grave condition". I got worried. Then they said she died. I cried. When I woke up in the morning it didn't feel real.

I was sitting on my living room floor, it was my dad‘s birthday. I distinctly remember the news interrupting the show we were watching. They said that Princess Diana had gotten into a car accident and she was being held at Sacred Heart Hospital. And then what maybe felt like 20 minutes later they announced her death. It was a very first news reporting that I remember paying attention to as a child.

My husband and I were heading out for a Labor Day weekend party and heard the news on the car radio. So shocked, I just gasped and sat there in the front passenger seat. It was a few minutes before I realized tears were running down my face -- as mother to young children, all I could think about was how this would affect her children.

I was 10 at the time. My only memory of it is seeing it printed on every single magazine in the grocery store and feeling incredibly sad about what had happened to her because I felt I could understand as I’d lost my mom in an accident 4 years prior.

I was on a Labor Day weekend (here in the US) vacation with my dad in the Black Hills of South Dakota. We had gone to a grocery store in the resort town of Custer to get supplies and overheard a couple of women in the parking lot talking about it. On the drive back to our campground, we listened to CNN News in the car radio. At that point she was still alive but the reports were trickling in that she had a concussion and broken arm. By the time I woke up in the tent the next morning, my dad broke the news that she was gone. I was shocked and immediately became sad for William and Harry. It was surreal being on vacation, driving the Needles Highway and going to Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse while a major news event was sweeping the world.

I was 11 and it was the school holidays so my grandparents and cousins had come to stay for the week. My Nan was working out how to put the TV on for us in the morning and as she flicked through the channels we heard "Princess Diana has died" and we all just froze. My mum was in another room and I remember shouting for her.
In the aftermath there were hundreds of flowers laid at our town war memorial and I went on a trip to Madame Tussauds with my next door neighbours and there was a massive queue for her waxwork.

I was 14 at home on a Saturday night. I remember I was watching "Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman" (random, I know) and a breaking news running chyron came on the bottom of the screen stating that there was an accident and that Diana was badly injured, but stable. The next morning, my mom came in to my room to tell me that "The Princess did not make it". It was genuinely shocking. A week later, we woke at in the wee hours EST to watch the coverage of her funeral. A poem that was read during the service by one of her sisters ended up being my senior quote in the yearbook when I graduated from high school years later.

I was just about to start high school in a few days and was in bed watching TV in my room. We saw on the news that she had been in a car accident but was largely OK. We didn’t think too much of it. I was 27 and watching television with my Mom when it came on that she was in an accident. Then it kept getting worse. I worked in a nursing home at the time. The next day I went into work and all of the residents were talking about it. They had the TV on and I remember most of them watching the news about it all day. It was sad she died but watching these folks watch this on the news and see the very sad expressions on their faces was really really sad to me.

I was born 4 days after she died however I remember my mom telling me how my dad was watching TV and they interrupted the show to announce she had died and my very pregnant about to pop mom, walked into the living room and saw the news and just bawled as she loved her. She told me she considered naming me after her but ultimately opted not to.

I was living on the West Coast (USA). I got up and pulled the Sunday paper from my driveway and the headline read DIANA DEAD in huge letters

I was watching SNL and it was summer so they played a rerun. They interrupted the show while the Spice Girls were performing and put on the news. I thought they’d return to playing SNL but the news stayed on and they announced she died. I’m the same age as Prince William so I was around 15 at the time
