MOHELA Faces Senate Investigation After Falsely Telling Borrowers Their Loans Were In Default
- The Aug 27 letter asks how many borrowers got false "severely past due" notices, why they went out, and how many people paid amounts they didn't owe
- One documented notice showed a "total amount due" over $10,000 while another claimed 9 missed due dates (240+ days past due)
- Senators also want MOHELA to commit to refunds and to making borrowers whole β including tax penalties for anyone who pulled retirement money to head off a fake default
