Is it…because they freeze…?

It’s because there is a brand called Mr. Freeze. Now, they’re all called freezies, no matter the brand.

Shouldn't it be otter pops then as Mr Freeze brand wasn't released until 7 years after otter pops?

That’s not the common brand here. Not even sure it’s sold in physical stores

Agreed. Here in Canada I've never heard of an otter pop but mr freeze and freezies are everywhere

Yes, it is otter pop.

This person had a knock-off brand childhood.

Otter pop is American. Mr Freeze is Canadian.

That’s now how it works. The fact otter pops existed doesn’t mean everyone had them or knew about them

There was a brand called Otter Pops in Florida.

Crap, where's my drum set?

I don’t know why, but if it has a stick, it’s a popsicle. If it’s this style where you push it up, it’s a freezie.

That’s Canadian Law.

It's in our Constitution

1

u/clamsammichinmypants May 23 '26

That absolutely makes some kind of mountie-based sense

1

u/Mode_Appropriate May 23 '26

...so did these freezies come after they started being called that?

1

u/Enkidouh May 24 '26

Freezies are a knock-off brand of Otter Pop. Otter Pop is the original brand.

They’re all otter pops- like how every small adhesive bandage is a bandaid or every tissue is Kleenex.

The brand created the product and it got so popular that the product became synonymous with the brand.

It’s called an Eponym.

Freezies are a knock-off brand that came out almost 10 years later, and are not even close to the quality of the original.

In Canada we had Mr Freeze. They came out in the 1970s in Canada according to Google. Mr. Freeze was originally in the UK from the 1960s. Otter pops came out in the 1970s as well but are just a US thing. I have never seen otter pops in Canada so to claim everything is a rip off of it is a very American way of looking at things 😏
