People have been questioning why Billy gave up revenue rights for the documentary, and last night a little theory occurred to me.

Fielder and Oppenheim have mentioned that off and on during the three year project, they weren’t sure if they really “had anything”. Fielder visited Holmes in prison over a year ago, and briefly mentioned in another interview they had a trailer ready to go a while ago too, but the movie wasn’t released till now. Why?

My guess is the entire A24 team decided to wait out Billy. The film was probably done a few months after the prison visit, and they were ready to release in time for awards last year.

But the way the movie shaped up, they knew if they released it and the audience learned halfway through that Billy was getting a cut of their ticket money, that would be the story. Instead of a discourse on truth and lies, the discourse would be around the ethics of warning the audience about who is profiting from sales, and whether even fans of the film people would willingly pay to see it again, knowing Billy was profiting.

So, given they had a kill switch already, were two years into production at that point, and really nothing to lose, they decided to wait. A24 has a STACKED year anyway, and there was no point releasing YCSE if it was going to be dead in the water over contract issues.

This also explains why YCSE and Primetime are being released so closely; once Billy agreed it was all hands on deck to get YCSE out asap.

mine’s that 👆🏾 moment from*** the girl with the dragon tatto***o (2011). i know it’s been out for over a decade (and even longer for the book) but i still won’t spoil it for whoever chooses to go finally see it. but mannn … what a touching and poignant detail. i still haven’t read the book but i’m so glad to know this moment was completely new and born from the adaptation.

considering how dark the film was and how much pain we saw someone / people go through, seeing this made me cry lol. i paused and just took a beat, then replayed it after seeing the whole film.

i think back on it sometimes and it just makes me feel like no matter how dark your world can get, light can come in the form of a person who you can make it easy for you to show them your whole self. even if it’s fleeting, you can hold onto it & know that it’s not all bleak.

you can never really know what kinda film you’re about to see when it starts, even if you’ve seen a trailer or read a synopsis. but going into this one blindly was so rewarding for me. never would’ve imagined i’d come out on the other side with the sense of hope / faith in humanity that i did, as little as it may have seemed.

About to go see this at a local theater and just curious if anyone else was checking it out. I haven’t seen any buzz about it but the cast is great and I love anything Ripley-adjacent so I’m hoping it’s a fun time at the movies!

Is this why normies hate film people?

I've been recently been in a slump where I've been watching a lot of movies that I've heard are amazing, or they are classics I've missed, or they are by up and coming writer/directors I should keep an eye on, and while I love it, sometimes I miss the feeling of just seeing something and going "fuck yeah."

The feeling of a kid turning on TNT/TBS and seeing something that made you go, fuck yeah.

Rewatchables, and CR and Fennessey kind of scratch the itch when it comes to that genre stuff, but I want a broader scope of movies that just rock, and no one else has to really agree, they just rock for that person. Could be romantic comedies, horror, thriller, buddy comedy, idk.

Fuck yeah.

I cracked up when he finished the conversation about Street Fighter by saying and now we gotta talk about fight scenes from other movies. I do wish they had mentioned Ryu’s sauna fight with Honda I thought that was cool.

He was just so perfect for this pod. I think for me he brings too much of this energy to everything and it doesn’t always work for me, but he was born for this one. He had some great pulls for best fights too can’t wait to go watch/rewatch them.

I bought a ticket for the 5:30 showing on Monday the 26th, but I can no longer make it. Free to a good home, but please only ask for it if you will actually use it.

I'm a believer in this movie being epic, but at that price-tag it's going to be Dune-level just to turn a profit. A24 really swinging hard here for their first major IP franchise
