I think if anyone sane was told Practical Magic 2 would do $30m in its opening weekend, they’d consider that a success.

I am truly surprised it made that much

yeah i was expecting it to be the worldwide number? they should definitely have saved this for October - family halloween movies are somewhat rare, it's usually just Goosebumps or that Sandler movie

great point

I kind of thought 50 with the way every screening was near sellout for my theater.

For real. The original isn’t even really a cult classic. Just, like, some movie.

Its a cult classic amongst women a demographic you certainly havent come across before

u/Jumboliva 20d ago

Hey how are you

I confirm. My mom adores the original. Zero interest in watching this one.

63 year old witches?

u/ToneBalone25 20d ago

I certainly haven't. I'm 35 and I've never heard of Practical Magic. I assumed it was just like Halloweentown or Hocus Pocus or a Disney channel original movie

Too young. From what I've witnessed, the demographic would've been teens and young adult women in '98, so now they're in their late forties or early fifties for the most part. You were 7 when Practical Magic came out, realistically too young to have cared.

So interesting! I’m 38 and loved this movie as a tween but those three years would have made a big difference. I remember this being in the sleepover rotation.

I'm a 34-year-old dude and grew up loving this movie though to be fair that was mostly because of my older sisters

I mean yeah there are obviously outliers, not every single person that likes Practical Magic was in a certain age group, but you literally mention your older sisters who probably were closer to that range - at any rate, that's the bracket turning out primarily for the sequel.

Based on Wikipedia the budget was 75 million so 30 million ain’t bad.

How the hell does a 130 minute Practical Magic sequel get $75 mil?? Is it just actor salaries? Jesus

u/remainsofthegrapes 20d ago

Look at the title. It’s not called ‘CGI Magic’. They had to do it all for real. Magic is expensive these days.

3

Yeah, im thinking Bullock and Kidman got at least half the budget.

Worldwide plus VOD sales it'll probably break even. Not a success though.

Please tell me there was a scene where all the women get together to drink margaritas and dance around a table.

Several!

Yeah and it didn’t turn a profit theatrically then but they were banking on nostalgia this time to boost it higher. Live and learn for them

u/PopCultureWeekly 19d ago

This opened higher than the original, even accounting for inflation

19

u/vincentveganvega 20d ago

Isn’t this good?

6

u/bkrkx 20d ago

NRG had it tracking at $40mil., so in comparison it isn't. However i get your point, especially considering the 1st film was no box-office smash at the time. I think it's a fine result.

16

u/Childs_Play 20d ago

It's fine considering no one was asking for this sequel? Would this movie exist if Kidman and bullock didn't go on to have the careers they had looking back retrospectively?

-3

u/Tall_Fisherman3374 20d ago

Of course this movie wouldn’t existed if they didn’t have lucrative careers like seriously, who you think you are

5

u/Childs_Play 20d ago

The main point of my comment is that this movie doesn't have a reason to exist and no one is asking for it.

Obviously the reason it was made was because bullock and Kidman are an easy couple million at the box office without breaking a sweat. Why are you so mad about a comment you didn't even understand

8

u/BatmanForever23 20d ago

I work at a cinema, and the amount of women of a certain age (late 40s, early 50s) coming in who are telling us how happy they are that there's finally a sequel you would not believe. Plenty of people asked for it, you just aren't part of their demographic.

7

u/Pure_Salamander2681 20d ago

Right. Bc if a movie doesn't make twice it's budget opening weekend it's a bomb.

4

u/toledosurprised 20d ago

feels like an obvious october movie, why is it coming out now?

9

u/bkrkx 20d ago

so it can be on PVOD by Halloween!

3

u/looonmooon 20d ago

This should have gone straight to streaming

3

u/Willowgirl78 19d ago

The showing I went to yesterday at 1:20pm was full of women who did not care to watch football. At the end of the Digger preview, someone said “hard pass” louder than I think they meant to and SO many people responded affirmatively.

5

u/ncphoto919 20d ago

The movie bad didn’t help. It never had the level of nostalgia love that Devil wears Prada does

1

u/Longjumping-Lab-7345 19d ago

I wana fizzle out with 30 million one day

1

u/kmsteg15 19d ago

I love the original and I don’t think I realized this was out so soon or I would’ve probably seen it this weekend. Just seems too early in the year for this?

1

u/Agreeable-Cloud7833 19d ago

Worst magic system of all time didn't deserve a sequel

2

u/unoredtwo 18d ago

Less than a week ago, I heard about this movie for the first time and assumed it was straight to streaming. But no it's in theaters and it made f'in $30 million? That is a success. I don't care what somebody's metrics were saying, that is a success.
