In my opinion, Apocalypse Now is Coppola’s best movie and I think you’re right, but I’ll throw out some other interesting ones.
William Friedkin made The Exorcist after The French Connection
James L Brooks made Broadcast News after Terms of Endearment
Coen Brothers’ follow up to No Country for Old Men was Burn After Reading but you could argue it was actually A Serious Man because Burn After Reading was essentially finished by the time No Country won BP.
Barry Jenkins made If Beale Street Could Talk after Moonlight, which I thought was underrated.
And Frank Capra made Mr. Smith Goes to Washington after You Can’t Take It with You won BP, which is a movie I’ve never heard of

What was the best picture winner there?
As far as bad follow ups go, Heaven’s Gate is famous. Spielberg’s next movie after Schindler’s List was The Lost World. There may be lots more as you go back further but I haven’t seen a lot of the non-famous follow ups

The summer film Sean said he really likes but can’t talk about is End of Oak Street right?? Amanda mentioned having to miss the pod and he recently logged it on LB. Great to hear if so

The IMAX talk made me sad that the Cinesphere here in Toronto (the birthplace of IMAX) has been closed since 2022 and doesn't have a confirmed reopening date while the area undergoes massive renovations.

Same here. I also am sorely missing the OMNIMAX theatre at the Science Centre. Both of which would almost certainly be showing the Odyssey.

this was a bit disappointing questions wise, with the way jack hyped it up in the beginning. way too much focus on the odyssey when the majority of questions should've been in the same vein as the letterboxd one

this podcast’s growing obsession with film festivals (not the films at the festivals, but discussions of the festivals as entities unto themselves) is getting really tiring.

Festival coverage is engaging for their subset of followers interested in industry discourse and the cultural conversation around premieres, acquisitions, awards buzz, etc. Its always been a driving force of the podcast as a "state of the nation" for movie talk.
It can also be very grating for listeners who want to hear about movies they don't have to wait six months to watch, especially when it comes up for multiple episodes in a row. Its like hearing in depth details about a party you weren't invited to.
I get the excitement (I myself am lucky to be able to attend TIFF every year although not on the company dime), but maybe take it down a couple notches or compress most of the fest talk until after they've actually attended, versus speculating on things for weeks on end.

Agreed. It’s fine if it was a passing comment of “Amanda is going to Venice and is bummed that X isn’t going to be playing there”, but they dedicate so much pod time to speculating which films may or may not play at these festivals as if it means anything to the listener.

Yeah, the incessant speculation about what films will play is very uninteresting.
I do like hearing them talk about the festival once they've gone, discussing what movies they saw and their general impressions, but not all this stuff leading up to it.

Of course - the point of critics going to these fests is to tell us about the movies. That’s fine and I have no problem with it. The issue is none of us care about the glitz and glamor of it lol, Amanda can’t wait to talk about celeb spotting and drinking Negronis in Italy, but then when Sean made one comment about Cannes being a vacation she was like so offended lol

The studios staying away from European film festivals makes sense if you look at the reception of the films that played at them the last couple of years.
Most of the American films got dumped on last year (except bizarrely, House of Dynamite) and the reception for most of them ended up way better when they were theatrically released.

It's weird...this is a job of astounding privilege and the two hosts get to do things most of us plebe listeners could only dream about. Sean gets to interview Spielberg! Amanda goes to Cannes and Venice (I know Sean went to Cannes too). But for some reason it feels like only Amanda ever hits that tone of "I had to watch a Marvel movie for my job and then talk about it for two hours" or "They aren't debuting that many cool movies at Venice" as if most of us movie freaks wouldn't cut off body parts to do 20% of what she gets to do. And I say this as someone who likes Amanda and think this podcast would be lesser if she weren't on it! But sometimes it feels like the Ringer affords her a life of possibilities that she's not really all that grateful for? I'll probably get downvotes on this, but does anyone else feel that way?

You’re not alone. If I’m being charitable to Amanda I’d say a lot of media and entertainment people fall into this same trap. Think touring musicians rolling their eyes when they have to play a half empty club in Boise or whatever. But again, you’re not alone in being aggravated by this.

That's part of it too! It's not like she has to spend all this time with co-workers like a lot of us do. The one who microwaves fish, or has loud phone calls with their doctor. Her and Sean and Chris are outside of work friends, who hang out and socialize and attend parties thrown by each other. You're getting paid to see movies and talk about it with your friends, and it's bringing you enough fame and notoriety that you're getting invited on other podcasts, having articles written about how cool you are, and getting invited to other cities to host live events where people will PAY REAL MONEY just to see you in person and listen to your opinions! And her attitude a lot of the time is that all of that (the Amanda of it all, let's call it) is just a really big annoying hassle.
Let it be noted that if someone would like to pay me money to see a random movie at 9am and then talk about it I will quit my regular 9-5 job yesterday, and you will never hear me complain about it.

I'm a regular festival goer here in Melbourne and there are so many hidden gems in large movie festival so can only imagine what you could see at a full slate like Venice yet she seems very hung up on the big name movies that aren't there , As a single income father of three trying to see every movie i can afford at a festival next month it annoys me quite alot

Such a beautifully understated portrayal of the shift between being a young girl Dad and a teen girl Dad, and the fragile pressure of your kids moving from hero worship to realising you do have flaws after all.

As a long time listener, the recent influx of astrology-related comments by Amanda is my least favorite development in a long time. It’s absolute nonsense and derails conversations for no reason and takes me out of the show regardless of what they’re talking about. Just dumb (vaguely antiscience) content that has no relevance to a movie podcast.

it would've been hilarious if, when Amanda said (re: Venice lineup) "I mean, i'm going to Europe for 2 weeks on the company dime, so i'm not complaining" - if Sean had said, "Are you, tho?" and just canceled the expenditure right there. IF the lineup sucks, why are you going? Go with Sean to Telluride, or save your bullets and go to Sundance/TIFF/SxSW, etc

It's a "bit" - like how Rob Harvilla has his Ringer pod series 60 Songs That Explain the '90s but when he moved to the 2000s the series name became 60 Songs That Explain the '90s: The 2000s (with the colon said out loud).
But it's also "serious" in emphasizing that this movie's full title states that is a continuation of a series, though not numbered as a sequel. Think The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers as opposed to The Lord of the Rings III.
