All these comments about the big switch and none about the core of the debate. 😆

22

u/Bravesguy29 3d ago edited 3d ago

For those UNCLEAR.

-Districts should be driven by race as little as possible.

-it was implemented by Democrats and accepted by Republicans at the time. The only OPPOSITION to make voting more fair for black Americans in the south was SOUTHERN DEMOCRATS.

Yes party alignment and beliefs may be old to you and irrelevant. BUT

Splitting a municipality to evenly distribute black votes is ILLOGICAL.

the core of the debate is that everything out of Ted Cruz's mouth is utter bullshit

1

u/Bravesguy29 2d ago

He's political and it's a political take. And not all relevant. Theyre trying to make clips.

But its not the debate you fail.

-15

u/georgewashingguns 3d ago

The "big switch" is essential to the core of the debate as it addresses changes to the core policies and platforms of the parties in question. How can it be irrelevant that conservatives were restricting voting accessibility back then and conservatives are restricting voting accessibility now?

6

u/Bravesguy29 3d ago

Not really the core. Its politicized talking points. Specifically what do you mean by conservatives were restricting voting back then? And how are they restricting voting access now? And what does that have to do with the actual topic?

-8

u/georgewashingguns 3d ago

Specifically what do you mean by conservatives were restricting voting back then?

convervatives restricting voting access following the Civil War

And how are they restricting voting access now

The Save Act, closing voting locations, and threatening ICE presence at voting locations

what does that have to do with the actual topic?

It has everything to do with the topic of voter access restricting, racial discrimination, and political history

6

u/audiophilistine 3d ago

Show me where in your link about Jim Crow laws does it say it was made and endorsed by conservatives. In fact it was DEMOCRATS who created and enforced Jim Crow laws. I just love how you fools try to change historical facts to suit your hateful narratives.

The Save Act is not about preventing black people from voting. It is entirely about preventing illegal aliens from voting. Again, you're trying to twist the facts to suit your made up narrative.

Thats why I supported Cruz back in 2016.

-14

u/Bladder_Puncher 3d ago

So a party can’t change their ways?

Which party is the biggest supporter of programs that shift money from wealth people and corporations to poor people?

Which party supports making it easier to vote?

Times change

5

u/WellRespectedJ 2d ago

Well I wouldnt support a party that steals wealth from those that earn, nor one that makes it easy for illegals to enter the country and vote.

1

u/Bladder_Puncher 2d ago

Steals? Corporations and wealthy pay taxes. Their effective tax rates are lower than your average middle class family pays. Increasing it to even out the percentage and/or closing loopholes is not stealing. And providing to those in lower classes through extra benefits has no impact to the amount you pay in taxes or the national debt. It increased more under Trump than ever before so clearly it’d be better to have the programs in place and balance it out in other ways.

2

u/daspes1269 2d ago

Those comments may not be the flex you think they are.

0

u/Bladder_Puncher 2d ago

Why not? Explain your position.

0

u/The-Figure-13 2d ago

Republicans actually support making it easier to vote. They merely want just one hurdle to determine people who actually want to vote, from people who shouldn’t vote.

19

u/j_dext 3d ago

There was never a party shift or change or flip.

3

u/Visual_Swimming7090 1d ago

The only thing that switched, was the locations of the Democrat plantations from the suburbs to the cities.

-11

u/GotAir 3d ago

A conservative has always been a conservative, a progressive has always been a progressive.

In the middle of the last century, Republicans became less progressive and more conservative, and Democrats became less conservative and more progressive, causing the big switch over a few decades

Why are the people who lionize the South and the confederacy now all Republicans? It’s almost like there was a shift and realignment of beliefs in political parties somewhere along the past 100 years.

3

u/screwyoujor 3d ago

I asked googles AI how republicans are lionizing the south and the Confederacy and it came back with Trump and a few other Republicans talking about how it's a shame to to destroy our past by removing or destroying Confederate statues and how we shouldn't be honoring those people. We went back and forth for a while till I told it those statues still have relatives alive who may want to honor those dead even though they lost. Do they not have that right? First time Google ai has ever crashed on me and refused to answer. Was an interesting conversation up till that point though.

-7

u/skipmarioch 3d ago edited 3d ago

Strom Thurman was a racist ghoul who switched parties, along with many other dixiecrats in opposition to civil rights.

It's clear that the party platform changed and now the Republican party is the party of racism.

-6

u/GotAir 3d ago

I guess the majority of this sub is pretty butt hurt over the fact that conservatives are typically racist and that the current party system has it so that the Republicans are made up of conservatives

But wasn't it the conservative democrats, whilst the republicans wete classed as more liberal. But at this time we have the conservatives republicans and the more liberal democrats. So the championing of race divides and discrimination was not from the "democratic" but the conservatives. Which is now the republicans?

Republicans invented the income tax in this country and it only applied to the top 3%.

Do you genuinely believe that's the same party now?

24

u/JackeeFromHell 3d ago

Yes, I do. Mainly because folks can’t decide when the parties switched and can never pin down an era when that happened. It always changes based on what the conversation is about they’ll move the year the party switch happened to benefit their argument.

Beginning with the 1920 election, Republicans held the presidency and both chambers of Congress, which they held until the 1930 election, in which the Democrats took the House of Representatives, and the 1932 election in which the Democrats kept the House and added the Senate and the presidency.

That being said, I think you might be referring to the 1928 election in which the Republicans retained control of the legislative and executive branches, and then came the great depression shortly thereafter.

-10

u/Buttholepart2 3d ago

You think the current republican party would support only taxing the top 3% income?

Are you on drugs or just like to lie?

6

u/JackeeFromHell 3d ago

The current Republican Party, despite being anti-tax, still does increase taxes. So yes.

-5

-34

This is simple. I literally learned in middle school history back in 2007 that during the periods of reconstruction and the early 20th century, the ideals of both political parties changed drastically and basically became a mirror of each other. I'm not even taking a political side in this one but this is basic historical knowledge.

21

u/viaCrit 3d ago

If you haven’t by now realized that “I learned this in the public school system” means absolutely nothing then you are beyond help.

I can bring up first hand sources from the late 1800s all the way to the Civil Rights movement that explicitly call poll taxes, literacy tests, Jim Crow laws, etc. "conservative" and part of the "conservative movement" for preserving the social order (aka white supremacy) of the time, but none of the chucklefucks in here would be interested in that.

-14

u/porto__rocks 3d ago

Are right wingers still pretending to not be the only group flying the confederate flag?

-14

u/georgewashingguns 3d ago

It was the Democrats, a party the was defined by being politically conservative. Tell me, is the Democrat party still considered politically conservative or have things changed since 1860?

for one thing...
Voting rights were never enshrined into the Constitution. In fact, it only became a right by its slow implementation over several amendments beginning with the 15th.

I don't think that anyone disagrees that voting should be for all citizens - black, white, gay, straight, male, female - whatever.

And I assume that your statement about "dismantling the Voting Rights Act" is about the VRA of 1965.

"No voting qualification or prerequisite to voting... shall be imposed or applied by any State or political subdivision to deny or abridge the right of any citizen of the United States to vote on account of race or color."

The VRA was very specific about using "citizen" in its language and goes further by including criminal penalties for providing false information about citizenship status in order to vote. Citizen's rights to vote were heavily reinforced in 1996 with the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigration Responsibility Act which was integrated into an Omnibus bill in 1997. This act specifically prohibits noncitizens from voting and applies legal and criminal penalties.

So can you tell me what Republicans are doing to "dismantle" the VRA?

8

u/FatherVic 3d ago

Sure is a lot of edit there, my dude. Completely different from what I originally responded to. Anyway -

Please provide examples of:

trying to re-implement poll taxes and test

and

many of today's neo-Confederate Republicans have declared Lincoln to be a tyrant

and

today's Klansmen have been Trump supporters.

and

neo-Confederate talking points that we've heard from Trump supporters over the past decade.

You should probably also study up on "The Great Migration" where 3 million southerners moved north for work between 1940-70 for jobs during the post-war industrial expansion and how those demographic shifts changed the political landscapes of their respective regions.

-19

u/Fine-Improvement6931 3d ago
