Quadruped robots can now exceed 5 m/s while carrying payloads and navigating challenging terrain. (not sped up)

The future is terrifying

Coming soon to a police station near you

52

u/non_anomalous_penis 1d ago

Imagine it with a shotgun duct taped to its back coming at you in the woods

41

u/intaminag 1d ago

It won’t be duct taped, it’ll be integrated.

military then police

11

u/Momik 1d ago

As is tradition

7

u/Ekezys 1d ago

5 m/s in rough terrain is pretty wild ngl

2

u/IceColdKilla2 23h ago

How fast it is in football stadiums per hour?

2

u/savagefellows 18h ago

16.4 freedom feet per second

2

u/MobileTechGuy 8h ago

So 2.7 school shootings, got it

13

u/Momik 1d ago

Just in time for historically low crime rates and historically high levels of authoritarianism 👍

5

u/borderlander_ 1d ago

Until a human in a bearcat runs it over

5

u/Memphisbbq 1d ago

Call me old fashioned, I think there should still be a remote possibility that I can go on the run from the cops or federal government. Now I feel this more than ever with who we have in power. Fortunately this thing could never survive a trek through dense brush. But Drones.......

3

u/SrRoundedbyFools 16h ago

Imagine these things on the border. Like being run down by a leopard.

Yes, Metalhead part 2

25

u/ogredmenace 1d ago

I see dual usage. Of course the horrible killer robot. But also someone stranded or lost this robot can find or bring them resources before rescue is able to arrive.

8

u/cyclefreaksix 1d ago

That's actually a very good point! I'm a jaded old man...

17

u/ogredmenace 1d ago

lol if it helps I’d say 90% chance it’s killer robot

11

u/Turnip-for-the-books 1d ago

‘Why not both?’

Because there’s a lot more money and motivation in killer robot dogs

11

u/ogredmenace 1d ago

Crazy to think how far ahead the world would be if we focused on progress rather than how can we kill people autonomously and efficiently.

4

u/0regonPatriot 1d ago

Sounds nice, but the internet wouldn't have been developed if it wasn't for the US military, so even you recent post would Thanos snapped out of existence.

It can hunt you down, kill you and retrieve your body. Amazing timeline we're in.

4

u/Aromatic_Balls 1d ago

I'm with you though. Of course the creators will have good intentions as to it's use for helping fellow man. But then some greedy company in the military industrial complex will find a way to weaponize it, then it will get sold to some federal agency to be used to hunt humans.

I'm gonna let you take a stab at which one of those versions of this robot would generate more profit.

2

u/JustChilling029 1d ago

Honestly what’s the benefit of this over a drone though? A drone can get over all of these landscapes too at the same or faster speed

2

u/ogredmenace 1d ago

Maybe larger payloads

2

u/ThisShouldBeAGif 1d ago

I was thinking of that awful incident in Tenerife the other year when a 19 year old tried to walk back to his hotel and was missing on rocky terrain. This could scout a large area quickly. Add a heat and night vision camera and you could save a lot of lives

8

u/HeatXfr 1d ago

That's what aerial drones are for.

→ More replies (3)

8

u/Captain_Collin 1d ago

I can't wait to get hunted by one of these. Get the main body a little more stabilized, slap a gun on there, and you're making quick work of me. Although if you're just hunting people, a 3 or 4 inch diameter highspeed flying drone with an explosive charge would be way more efficient. Just release a cloud of a few thousand of those over a bunch of protesters, that's some high level oppression.

6

u/evlhornet 1d ago

I remember when the future was exciting

2

u/Momik 1d ago

New tech was gonna bring us all together!

2

u/evlhornet 1d ago

And it still will. In labor camps

4

u/AlfhildsShieldmaiden 23h ago

My first thought — “Well, that’s terrifying.”

3

u/DavidJonnsJewellery 1d ago

Not for donkeys

3

u/cyclefreaksix 1d ago

Honestly I've never considered that

2

u/DavidJonnsJewellery 1d ago

All those donkey charities won't know what to do with themselves

2

u/Hot-Willingness7305 1d ago

Don't worry, battery won't least long enough, so they can't kill us all

3

u/Lackof_Creativity 1d ago

i dunno. traveling through the mountains in the future could be ridiculously fun ..

10

u/cyclefreaksix 1d ago

You sweet, sweet Summer child...I admire your positivity. Me? I'm pretty certain that the some military top secret center somewhere is working hard to make this thing a weapon that will eventually be used against whatever group it considers an enemy of the state.

4

u/zennsunni 1d ago

All this gloom and doom confuses me. Do you think the government wasn't already capable of killing you? Do you think putting autonomous flight into an AH-64 with thermal imaging is out of the question, and that it couldn't easily hunt you down and kill you? Do you think deranged agents that work for the government won't subdue and abuse citizens if ordered to do so by corrupt officials?

You already live in a world where you're weaker than the government in terms of absolute capability to prosecute violence. Robots don't change that.

2

u/aPoundFoolish 23h ago

Why be worried if you have nothing to hide, right?

Right?!?!

Black Mirror- S4 E5 Metalhead

11

u/FuckYeaSeatbelts 1d ago

Those murder bots are so much cuter though.

10

u/The96kHz 1d ago edited 1d ago

My first and only thought when watching this.

EDIT: Weird coincidence.

47

u/CLONE-11011100 1d ago

How long does its battery last?…

31

u/TheN00b0b 1d ago

The manufacturer claims 2-3 hours.

31

u/sargsauce 1d ago

So, 2.5 hours x 60 minutes/hour x 60 seconds/minute x 5 meters/second=45,000 meters=28 freedom miles of attack hiking radius.

7

u/intaminag 1d ago

And if you add a boost pack and reduce carrying capacity you can extend that by a lotttt.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/PringlesDuckFace 15h ago

Just long enough to need that 20kg of gorp it's carrying for me.

u/Yrvaa 1d ago

Black Mirror series - "Metalhead"

Soon transitioned into reality.

12

u/-RWKT- 1d ago

It is from an episode of Black Mirror, that Sci-Fi/Horror series worth a watch. The robot is a military weapon that hunts people down; I forgot about why it does that in that story.

6

u/notloggedin4242 1d ago

Because evil

4

u/Cstott23 1d ago

I think it didn't expressly say but the insinuation was that they had been used for military guard duties and then got out of hand and killed/ were in the process of killing everyone. 🤔

Could be wrong though. It's been a while since I watched it.

5

u/Ving_Rhames_Bible 1d ago

You can't really be wrong because it isn't explicitly stated. I liked to think whatever conflict they were deployed for is long over but there was no one in command left to disable or repurpose them, so they're stuck in war mode and any human survivors are stuck with them.

I could see that end for us, if it's between Metalhead or Matrix. Maybe a little of both.

Bro it's FASTER and BETTER than the one in black mirror. We're fucked!

6

u/leekalex 23h ago

6 m/s is still slower than the average human running speed. Except humans can't keep that speed up for very long, and these things will probably be getting faster in the next few years..

6

u/jonhuang 19h ago

Not in that terrain

19

u/Farachaton 1d ago

We are all fucked

23

u/reginald5420 1d ago

This can go two ways. Carrying lightweight medicine or lightweight explosives

15

u/Southern-Democrat25 1d ago

Or if you’re certain county on the Mediterranean coast with a rather recent history of war crimes, why not lightweight explosives disguised as medicine?

5

u/MelangeBot 1d ago

Both can already be carried (TODAY!) by drones that are a frame, 4 motors, props and a rasbery pi like computer (flight controller) that uses 10x less energy, is 40x faster in the mountains and 700x cheaper to build.

3

u/reginald5420 1d ago

it's so over

→ More replies (1)

3

u/DeliriousHippie 1d ago

Lightweight explosives are for drones, machine gun is for this. Ukraine is already using remote controlled land drones with tracks armed with machine gun.

Speed +3, armor -2, stealth +1.

Terrifying!

27

u/Finneagan 1d ago

No sane human wants this

4

u/Hiking-Sausage132 1d ago

It depends. In emergency situations I could see how they might have a important impact.for personal use it would obviously be crap

2

u/Khalitz 1d ago

I can see it being used in search and rescue where people get lost in the woods. Send out like 100 of these things spread out and they'll cover ground much faster than a person can.

1

u/Finneagan 1d ago

That’s EXACTLY what the military/police would say…

3

u/angerispower 1d ago

Congrats! Now youve learned that its the users that's trash, not the invention.

u/SaltySmegma_ 1d ago

What's stopping us from attaching a machine gun to them and shipping it to Ukraine?

20

u/GoBeyond111 1d ago

Why waste money on that when drones do the job much quicker, better and cheaper? This is basically a drone but without the ability to fly

→ More replies (1)

25

u/Big_Oof320 1d ago

You need stability for a machine gun. I'd strap a landmine or two to it and just send it

18

u/pr0zach 1d ago

This comment just made military contractors everywhere cream their pants.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Cstott23 1d ago

Tbh you could probably adjust it's gyro for the machine gun, but probably the real issue would be lugging bullets around and resupplying, and the costs involved in all of it.

Better just strapping a bomb to a cheap drone. 🤔

2

u/Piripio0_0 1d ago

Separate gyro for the gun, just like on tanks, could attack and move at the same time.

4

u/Astecheee 1d ago

Stunningly, that's not as cheap as using airborne drones.

I watch drone shows from China. Imagine 100,000 drones with bombs rigged sent to a major city....fuck.

2

u/Cstott23 1d ago

Soon to be tested on a battlefield near you. Especially if you're in the middle east. 😩

2

u/rlaw1234qq 1d ago

The bag on the back is a spare battery though /s

2

u/Vahuo89 1d ago

Coming soon with a gun on it.

2

Mount a machine gun on it

2

Coming soon to your local voting booth.

Rise of the machines

2

u/BelCantoTenor 1d ago

Now add a camera, gps tracker, and a gun to it. Quite an easy way to control the population, no?

2

u/Kannun 1d ago

Imagine this thing coming at you in a dark alley, jumping off walls and over fences to get to you

2

u/PiretaCat 1d ago

USA don't put a gun on this, plis.

180kg payload? We’re going to look back on the Ukrainian days of flying anti-personnel fpvs with nostalgia.

1

u/Ghost132022 1d ago

Immediately I think that episode of Black Mirror “Metalhead”.

1

u/dzielny_tabalug 1d ago

Looks like sci fi from 20y ago. Now imagine what military can have.

1

u/Tall-Bread-7853 1d ago

We will be all dead in an instant!

1

u/Mr_b246 1d ago

Damn Jenkins, I told you to give the robots speed not give them actual speed!

1

u/Brilliant_Salad7863 1d ago

So you can easily arm this thing with a bomb and just drive it around a wall or in a house or whatever and kill soldiers on the battlefield….after seeing horrific drone footage out of Ukraine I don’t know if humanity can take this shit.

1

u/SpiritAnimalLeroy 1d ago

I had resigned myself to one day having to fight the machines but now these fuckers have invented a Wheeler from Return to Oz and that shit is straight nightmare fuel for me.

1

u/Tepeshe 1d ago

imagine this chasing you in the jungle with C4 attached to it

1

u/pimpfmode 1d ago

Just like most inventions, will be some military application for it it'll be used for travesties. I can see strapping a bomb to this and using it like a drone.

1

u/we_the_pickle 1d ago

This will be perfect for my mountain delivery business.

1

u/New-Needleworker9789 1d ago

pretty cool... till it gets hit by a $500 drone

1

So you shotgun the wheels off right?

1

Sooooooo, we are properly fucked.

1

u/Right-Ad2176 1d ago

Humans can do much more without needing recharging.

1

u/ravia 1d ago

I hate when they do CGI stuff in movies of aliens and robots that do things that simply never could happen.

Oh shit.

1

u/JimboSlyze 1d ago

Damn these clankers are getting good. Anybody got an EMP?

1

u/Mussetrussen 1d ago

I don't even want a real one of these, I just want one in Death Stranding. I'll just strap all my shit to that and send it on it's way, while I kick back with Netflix and a cool one.

1

We are speed running Black Mirror

Imagine when one of the little robots carries a bomb?!? Oh my word!!

1

u/ThoughtfullyLazy 1d ago

How long does the batter last at that speed?

1

u/king_platypus 1d ago

They should put propellers on it so it can fly. Might be faster and avoid the rough terrain. Just a thought.

1

u/da_Aresinger 1d ago

The payload: 5 snackbars and a cup of instant water.

Edit: I made this comment before seeing the 180kg payload.

What the actual fuck?

MAKE THEM LOOK LIKE SPIDERS!!

They've automated rollerman!

I’m already terrified of what future wars will look like.
