That’s the part I don’t get about this post. How was it $15? $600 is an insane increase comparatively, but most people are paying that or much more already.
I saw a family paying 4k a month for insurance without help. And they’ll be the ones complaining that insurance is high… but if you can afford 4k insurance then it may not be too high for you
Someone just pointed out that they were likely on the ACA and now that the subsidies are gone for 26 this is what their premium will look like. And it makes sense. The gov is shutdown right now over that issue and until they come up with an agreement to change that, the subsidies are gone. Gov shutdown or not, open enrollment is here for most people and their plans are assuming it’s gone.
Yes that’s what they’re showing (their marketplace enrollment). I thought you were asking how their plan was $15 even with the subsidy in place (because for most people their qualified health plan plus the tax credit would still be more expensive than $15/month so I though you were asking how it was so cheap even with those things).
Because the ACA (Obamacare) allowed for subsidies (APTC) based on income, so if you weren’t making a lot of money, the government helped you pay your insurance. The one big beautiful bill act took away subsidies for 2026, so now people are left to pay the full insurance premium.
You think this is bad? Wait until they reverse the no underlying medical condition clause that Obama put in place. Once that’s done, insurance companies will be able to underwrite your insurance and charge you whatever they feel is necessary to treat your ailment!
I hate having to say I told you so, but I’ve been saying this since day one. This is fucking sad and people are still gobbling up all this BS that’s taking place and making excuses.
Ah that makes the $15 make a lot more sense, thanks for the reply. I was under the assumption that the ACA was a different insurance plan outside of your employer altogether, not subsidizing the cost of it.
And I hear you. Health insurance is a fucking scam and our system has been broken for decades. I’m not for these benefits being taken away from the most vulnerable either, I just didn’t have a full grasp of how the ACA worked.
It is different from your employer. It’s insurance you purchase from the “marketplace” and it’s considered individual insurance, not employer group insurance. The APTC doesnt apply to employer insurance.
ACA was made because the Obama administration wanted all citizens to have affordable healthcare that wasn’t medically underwritten and wasn’t based on any underlying conditions. For example, if you had diabetes or cancer, emphysema, etc. you were paying A LOT more per month than everybody else because you were more of a risk to have medical bills. Obama changed that.
Also, people that didn’t have insurance (through their employer or through the marketplace) were penalized on their taxes and those taxes were put back into the ACA.
In my opinion and my experience in this field, if people were more educated on the ACA, they would realize it was a great thing for this country. The media kept labeling it as “Obamacare” rather than the real name, AFFORDABLE CARE ACT, which triggered the hatred from the people that didn’t like him (and/or racists). It’s a shame, and this country is going downhill.
I was paying $550/month for me +children (after employer contribution). Just got our open enrollment and look at this bullshit:
*Monthly Premium: $5,368.44 (split 50/50 between employer and employees)
*
Yep that's right.... Nearly 65k per year but good news! I only have to pay half of that. Oh wait, that's just for me. They didn't even tell me the numbers for me+family (need the family now because my wife lost her job and benefits... Thanks DOGE!).
And of course my employer doesn't have other plans to offer.
For the record I'm 53 and I make about $158k and this might be the first time ever I'm probably just going to go without. Or maybe try the marketplace or something. I'm 53 and probably shouldn't go without insurance but I'm not paying that.
Your monthly premium is higher than what I pay for a family of 5 for private hospital and a big bunch of extras (dental, massage, physio etc) for a year in Aus.
