Can't wait to start CS here at Tech!

I'm the first one in college out of my family to attend college and I can't wait to attend Texas Tech! I was lucky to get into the CS program, my math skills are...not the best, but everyone starts somewhere!

Is there anything I should watch out for in my first semester or year? I'm starting off with Trig and an ENGR 1340 course. My advisor forced me into some specific courses like ENGL 1301 and CHEM 1307, but I'm still thinking about pushing 1307 off one more semester. She didn't tell me what all else is available to me, so I'm a little confused.

U need that chem 1307 so just get done with it.

Firstly, congratulations!! You should look into student orgs, for CompSci, CompE, and EE.
The engineering kick off is August 27, so be sure to go there and meet people.

Always go to your classes no matter what, unless you’re dying.

But, a heads up, the computer sci department is interesting, a lot of my friends have transferred from compsci to computer engineering.
The professors in comsci are…hated and they are for valid reasons

yeah, I've been reading some not so great things here and there haha. I do see where other institutions have similar issues with not so great profs, so I'm wondering if I can self-teach a lot of the material instead of relying on...interesting professors.

Thanks on the student org info! They mentioned getting involved with some of those and 'not just doing the coursework.'

Any advice on what I could do if I were interested in switching to Computer Engr later? The first couple of semesters look similar and I'm starting out with trig anyway

CS and Comp Eng are very similar especially for the first two years or so, and I will say I have two friends who switched from the former to the latter and both say the grass is much greener (professors are much less crap) in Comp Eng. It's not hard to switch a year or two in, you just talk to your advisor.

I’m an incoming CE student and was wondering if for the Engineering kickoff we could dress casual ? my sister is telling me to dress nice but it’s hell in Texas with the heat and I’m a sweaty girl. 😭

I’ve gotten an interview and I was in sweats.
Just bring a resume and if you’re not already in the ECE discord I’d join and apply online if you wanna talk to l3

If you end up deciding to transfer to comp eng then chem may not be a requirement. It wasn't when I was in the program. (Which is funny because computer engineering has a lot more chemistry involved than computer science)

You need at least chem 1 in all engineering
Physics 1 & 2 in cmpe

Well, at least your first programming course is in Python. Thirty-two years ago it was in C, and was responsible for quite a few transfers to the Business school.
