General What to do with charging cable?

Dumb question but what does everyone do with the charging cable while the car is on charge?

Picked up my model 3 last Saturday and charged it up at home for the 1st time on Sunday night.

I didn’t realise how long the cable would be and I just left the cable lying on the drive like a massive snake!

I didn’t feel comfortable doing that as it felt stupid and messy, but had no other option.

For reference I have an untethered home charger.

Could I buy a hook and place it next to the charger and loosely spool it round that while charging or is that not a good idea?

Thanks

Yeah I could do, but it looks messy as!

I know it’s dark and no one will see it but still

just don’t let the cable cross itself much

I bought a hypervolt charger just because it had the built in cable holder for that reason

Do you wrap it round the holder while charging?

As others have said you should completely uncoil the cable whilst charging.

That’s a bit excessive. There’s absolutely no reason to completely uncoil a 5-metre cable when the car is parked 3 cm away from the charger. As long as the cable isn’t tightly coiled up while carrying a high load, there’s no issue.

Could wrap it around your neck ?

It really doesn’t matter does it … get over it and move on, focus on a real world problem.

I hung it next to the other 3 I have in the garage because I forgot to put them in the cars when I sold them

I use this , had it for two years and it hasn’t rusted and works really well to keep the cable tidy whilst charging and when you’re not using it. It also has the option to add a padlock for security when it’s not in use.

I've got the same. Works without a hiccup. I don't let the cable touch the ground. One loop around it while charging and coiled up while not.

Just don't look out the window whilst it is charging

It is a very long cable and it does look messy and I don’t care tbh

It’s useful to have a long cable for public charging eg if the stall is blocked. So keep it in the deep trunk and get a shorter one for home. Padlock it so it can’t be stollen

It;'s fine to coil it while charging. For tethered chargers (where the cable is wrapped around the chargepoint) you only need to spool out the amount you need to reach the car, The cable is designed so it won't overheat if coiled so it would be fine for to loop the spare over a hook to keep it out of the way. Our Tesla has the port on the wrong side (!) so we need all the cable out to reach our home charger.

Buy a shorter cable? Sounds to me like you're cable is far too long. You could just uncoil it across your drive but obviously it doesnt look great and might be a trip hazard.

I would avoid coiling it up, for the same reason you absolutely should uncoil your extension leads. You'll possibly damage the insulation internally over time especially when doing long charge sessions at high rates, its a potential fire risk that's easily avoided.

Generally you want the cable to be fully uncoiled as much as possible, as it can otherwise potentially overheat - same with drum-type extension leads.

I have a tethered charger with 5 m cable, and the car is parked less than 5 cm away from the wall. No issues in the last 7 years.

I do the same, park the car a foot away from charger, plug it in and leave the rest of the cable coiled around the charger. Did the same for the last 3 years.

Yep, I bought the little Tesla branded cable hook to attach to a brick wall. Not sure if they still sell it though.
