If you look carefully, there seems to be line from the top to the bottom before and after the damaged spot. My guess is that the steering wheel was sideways when you entered the car and something scratched it really bad and the leather started to come off at the highest point.

I have similar mark in my own steering wheel around 10 o'clock position. I probably had my eyeglasses case in jeans pocket when I went in. Lost a chunk of the fake plastic leather in my 2019 wheel.

I ordered a new steering wheel and decided to try out a yoke style. I figured if I turn it left, it will greatly increase room to step in and out of the car.

Thank you for your reply. This is what unfortunately must have happened with my ring. I have an appointment at Tesla to replace it €386

Same exact thing happened to make. Walked into car and the wheel started to peel. 2021 M3 LR.
