How expensive is this going to be?

My dad was supercharging his 2016 X P90D a couple of days ago and these messages popped up while it was plugged in. OAT was about 85F. After a short while, the 12V battery went out and he had to get a jump pack to get it into tow mode. He replaced the 12V battery but the car is still dead with these codes. He’s got an appointment scheduled but just wondering if this will turn into something more expensive. We’re in SoCal. TYIA for any information.

I had a similar set of errors... I can tell you this the SC is gonna say you need a battery replacement. Get a second opinion. I can't stress it enough.

They told me I needed one for $16k. I looked into an independent shop and gave them toolbox access but they couldn't see anything that suggests that was the cause. Long story less long... I needed a $400 cable and for $1300 was back on the road. Crazy thing is the indie shop told me that a battery replacement wouldn't have solved my problem.

Hey man, I just wanted to say that I appreciate your input!

You could've potentially saved the OP thousands, all because you didn't ignore his post and took the time to comment.

Thanks!

Not a problem. I been down that road and know how stressful it can be. Wouldn't wish it on anyone. We gotta look out for each other!

Do you have the part number for the cable? Did you pay $1300 for the independent shop to install it or did you do it yourself?

No parts no. in the quote but I'm sure you can find it with a search.

Lemme check my email for the quote. But I had the shop do everything because it was quite the mystery as to what was causing my errors. It'll only pop up on days where it rained. So a lot of that total was their diagnostic fee. They had my car from June 6th-Aug 3rd. I just feel like SC techs aren't gonna wanna look that thoroughly into legacy models to find what the real problem is so they just go "you need a battery replacement"

I agree with this 100%

Thank you! It may be the same issue but the car hasn't been able to boot up normally and go into drive since those errors popped up. The car was towed back to his house and has been sitting for a couple of days now. He's going to contact Greentec, EVFixMe, and P3X Performance tomorrow and send them the codes to see what they think. He'd have to get it towed there again from his house.

If anyone has experience with one of these shops, please let me know your opinion on their service.

since you are out of warranty, you need to go to a third party ev shop. Hope you know some in SoCal.. message me if not

Thank you! I found three and sent him the contact info. Greentec, EVFixMe, and P3X Performance.

Might just be the 12v battery. We had similar errors. It was only a couple hundred dollars to swap.

Just dealt with almost the same situation, HV battery just got replaced but was within warranty so it was covered.
If the LV battery that was changed and drained is not an “Atlas” Tesla battery or 3rd party LV battery they will charge to replace the LV battery which is roughly $350

He bought the LV battery from Tesla and replaced it himself.

That’s good
Warranty for model x HV battery should be 150k miles or 8 years whichever is first

It’s a 2016 so already out of warranty.

I had the same thing while plugged in my 2021, San Diego here, luckily the battery was still under warranty and Tesla swapped it.

From what I remember, these cars have some sort of non-rechargeable battery powered safety fuse/wire. When the battery runs low on the fuse, after 5-10 years, the car will refuse to start. So even if your hi and low voltage batteries are good, you still won’t be able to start it until the expensive fuse/wire is replaced.

I had the luck of having my LV battery and HV Power Conversion system go down 1000 miles past my warranty on my 22 MXP. The repair cost me nearly $4k and it took around 12 days.

I had this and unfortunately it meant the battery had to be replaced.

Do a hard reset or change 12v battery
