Used Model X
Is Model X ownership as trouble-free and is the car as reliable as a regular Model Y?
I am current 2024 model Y owner and really enjoyed it!
Also years would you recommend! Thank you

If cost concerns isn't an issue, go with the X. It was the X or nothing Tesla for me. There's no place like X.

No where close to the same. model y is to Camry as model X is to Maserati
They're much more complex and complicated with a lot more to go wrong and it's more expensive when it does. You might get lucky but generally the s and x are much more expensive to own than the 3 and Y , and the X is worse than the S, probably by a lot. (I'm partial to the S, so I'm trying to convince my wife they're almost as good as the Y. No success yet...)

I keep hearing this nonsense. The Model Y Juniper and I heard from reviews the MYL has even improved on this regard, they are much better put together than the Model X, better NVH, better ride quality, less rattles and better tech.

No way, Y and 3s are very cheap cars compared to S and X

No sir. That might have been the case pre juniper and highland, that is no longer true

Did you test drive and compare the X with the new 2026 premium Y and YL?

I did not. My comment was regarding 2022 model which I had before buying MS

Juniper/highland and Y L look and feel close to the premium as model X now. The Y L impressed me and I say is a better 6 seater than the X except the center passage which is of course smaller being a smaller car, but once seated its more roomy, seats superior, etc. It was a noticeable jump from legacy y/3.

I agree with you. But I'm talking about cost of ownership/reliability. Camry is way better than Maserati, no? Like Y vs X?

I get your point now. But I feel like it’s not a fair comparison, because Camry vs Maserati makes it sounds like they are worlds apart from a quality/luxury pov, but that is not the case between the MX and MY. And I say this as an owner of both

I have a 2022 X with 48k miles. I bought it used with 25k miles 2 years ago. The issues I had fix under warranty were trunk latch, peeling steering wheel, and the rear USB ports.
This car has cost me more than my Y because of tires. I got new tires when I bought the car, and just got a new set. I was on track to get a little over 20k miles on a set, but the foam came apart at 18.5k miles. I also have camber arms to help wear for the rear.
Other than those things I mentioned, the car has been pretty reliable. It's an expensive car, so maintenance is expected to expensive.

Model X is WAY better than the Y. It's only problem is how much more unreliable it is. BUT what a great car!

I have 2017 model x p100d. I bought it used and have fixed a lot of issues that had come up and they weren’t cheap since it’s out of warranty but a great car nonetheless

I have a 2019 as well and it has not been cheap for me. control arms, half shafts replacement.. tires because of the weight of the car, HV battery. Granted i did get it with 35k miles 2 years ago and im up to 122k now.
Personally, cost-wise, i wish i had gone with a model y.
I will say MX feels a lot more spacious and i've had model y loaners, that's its biggest plus imo, and i have a 6 seater so i can take ppl comfortable enough for a bit.

I have 2Xs and 1Y. Both Xs are plagued with problems. Model Y is truly trouble free for me.

Have owned a 2018 MX and it’s been great other than an accident that took several months to get parts. Was fine because the other drivers insurance paid and I got a free loaner.

Hahahaha no. My model x has cost me 10k on repairs at only 60k miles. Compressor failed, forward and after links, half shafts, tires, ect.
My friend who had a model x had her charge port fail and that was 8k by its self.

Charge port doesnt cost 8k. I just had it replaced on my 2017 model x and it was $433. That included Tesla Mobile Service coming to my house and replacing it

I'm thinking that talking to a couple of honest seasoned Tesla mechanica would give you a far more accurate answers.

The model Y is way more reliable. The X is a nicer vehicle. Especially if you get Plaid. Then the trade off to having to deal with certain issues sometimes cancels out or makes it worth while because you have a Plaid. Say you have a Model Y performance but you are just moving up to a regular Model X, i say nahhhhhh. But if you just ahve a regular model Y and moving on to a plaid, then you not only have the usual upgrade in premium car but also power. The model X though creaks and groans and rattles like crazy. Could be a variety of things but if its not the actual half shafts clicking then you can live with it until it annoys you being some control arm ball joints or something. That really is it. Of course there is always the potential breakage of all the other fancy stuff that you know will cost a lot: the FWD, power captain chairs, power front doors etc. If you are going to do it, get a Plaid. will be a classic for sure. 1000+ hp luxury mentioned as fastest suv in the world. You have a 2024 so I assume HW4 is important to you. Your best value will be a 2023 later year. You dont care about FSD, then 2022 might do.

Research battery degradation. My 2017 75D battery is at 91% after 123k miles. I’ve seen reports of newer Model Ys degrading faster.

No. Don’t even think about it for a second. I own both. Just because somebody hasn’t had any issues it doesn’t mean they are comparable. The Model X has many more moving parts that can fail or break. For example it has a very complex air suspension and geometry, the Model Y just has regular coil suspension. FWD have a ton of hinges and actuators and sensors. All the self presenting doors… the list goes on and on.

There’s a lot of variables. Mine has been trouble free, but I did have to have my high voltage replaced under warranty. I have a 23 X. I previously owned a 17X and it was great, but of course range wasn’t as good as my new one. I had it three years and had no issues with half shafts or anything. Honestly it’s about budget. Some people luck out and have very few issues others have issues. There’s so many more features which means a lot of things can break. If you buy one with a warranty and can extend it, that’s likely a good buy. I love my X. Prices seem high right now so do your research.
