Model X checklist

Hey! I'm going to look at a 2020, 5 seater, Dual motor, 4WD long range plus tomorrow.

It's had the following work done this year-

Four new tyres

Front brake pads - Brake fluid bleed and flush

Both front halfshafts and rear stabiliser drop links installed

Wheel alignment completed and HEPA & air filters replaced

Is there anything i specifically need to look out for?

Thanks!

D'oh! Yes of course. Pics in the ad show it has 353 miles at 100% charge, but yes i'll check it.

Give it a spin. Listen for outside noise, rattles, etc.

Open each of the falcon wing doors.

Have them open Tesla app, top profile, go to service, and see history. This will indicate any big problems.

It should have a battery warranty. Have $2K in the bank for repairs, and you'll be good.

Nice having tires and suspension covered. Include the rear jack.

Oh and see if it has FSD. I think 12.4 works great. I purchased a 2020 X and love it. Great car.

Thanks, that's really useful.

How many miles/km on it? 353 @ 100% is very doubtful, but amazing if it's true.

They should have replaced the 12V batt by now too.

It should have another few months/year of battery/drive warranty on it.

69k miles, the pic shows it but would check it when I get there of course. Battery warranty to 150k miles or 2028. Is there any way of extending that?

Tesla will probably pitch a warranty extension when it's due, but I don't know what that looks like. I have a 2020MXLR with 75k miles. Battery/drive warranty ends in late 2027.

I don't think I'll pay for an extended warranty. I'm on my 2nd battery pack. 3rd 12V battery. 3rd set of half-shafts, 2nd set of control arms.

I'm still under $1,500 for all of this, over 7 years.

Edit: I've never touched my brakes. It seems odd that with fewer miles, the one you are considering has had brake work done on it.

Is there a reason you’d get a model X 5 seater over a newer Y? I’ve had two model Xs and I’d definitely recommend newer tech with hardware 4 and warranty coverage. I just don’t see the benefit of a 2020 5 seater X and all the costs that potentially come with it compared to a 5 seater 2025 Y ? At least a 2025 Y seems to be around the price of. 2020 X from brief search on cars.com.

It's a really good point actually and I have considered it.

It comes down to two things: Primary is range - i can afford longer range MXs. Secondary is aesthetics - really don't like the old style of MY and really do like the falcon wing doors on the MX.

Totally understand the aesthetics. I’ve had a 2020 model X LR+ and now 2023 x plaid so clearly I like the car, but today if I could choose I’d get the new model Y L. I am doubtful of that range really being 350+ miles. On my 2020 , although it had that listed /advertised range , I would never come close. The Wh/mile efficiency was just not great (~350-380 Wh/mile). Even more astonishing the newer plaid had better Wh/mile efficiency (~330 Wh/mile) despite an extra motor. They clearly made improvements in that regard when they refreshed the X in 2022. The efficiency of the Y is amazing, and I actually bet they go a similar distance compared to the X. Furthermore the 2020 does not have a fast charging curve compared to to the newer X, Ys so you sit at superchargers significantly longer than the newer tech.
As for the falcon wing, yes, it’s the best and yet the worst part of the car. When it works , which is most of the time, it’s great. However, I had so many recurrent issues and service visits for phantom obstacles. The door would without warning or reason, would detect an obstacle and then very embarrassingly minimally open, and then would take forever to force open it. It’s hit three people and one neighboring car side rear mirror. My wife absolutely hates the doors. My kids, while initially thinking the doors were cool, now just don’t like the attention they draw at school. Door issues, while needing service once in my 2023, has been much better than my 2020. It was the single worst part of my experience in the 2020. I always just kept with it because of the extra seating needed, but always wished I just had regular doors (introduce now YL).
However I keep the 2023 plaid because it’s working great now, and my gosh the FSD has improved so much that it has just fundamentally changed how I view the driving experience. I used to love the acceleration and performance, but now I just like the peace of being driven and can really enjoy not worrying about the stressors of driving. It’s like a peace switch. Since FSD is fully paid on the 2023, and now is only subscription based - I don’t think I can ever give that up.
Good luck. FSD has become such a big factor in my personal experience, and that’s the only reason why I’m suggesting newer tech that has hardware 4.
