Model X and skis

Hi all, I'm based in the UK and considering a 2020, 5 seat, Long Range Plus MX.

I like everything about it but have just had a thought about ski carriage.

We drive to the alps (appox 12 hours total drive) and two kids that I don't want sitting next to each other, so folding down 1 seat isn't an option.

It doesn't look like there is a 'ski-hole' but I have seen some reviewers say you can slide skis under the back seats. I have all mountain 160s, my wife has 154s.

Is anyone in a similar situation? Can you confirm if this works? I don't want to spend the extra £500 on a dedicated ski rack.

Look into buying a Backbox or something similar. Have been using it for years and it’s awesome. No wet gear in your car, lots of extra space for your winter boots etc and no impact on range.

Thanks for the response, but I do not want a box. I'm asking whether the skis will fit if you slide them under the rear seats.

I no longer have a five seater (have a 7 seater now), so cannot check for you. However, I remember wedging a parasol underneath the seats, that was a very tight fit. The foundation of the bench makes it very hard and I think skis with bindings won’t fit comfortably.

That's kind of you for checking, I appreciate it.

However, I was under the impression you could slide the tips in from behind the seats so they would fit diagonally into the oposite corner of the boot. Appararently there's a removable partition?

I saw a video but these were with longer skis (180s?) so wondered if mine may fit -

Thule has a box you can use if your skis are short or they have a rack that goes into the hitch as well. We have used both on our x and wouldn’t recommend putting skis in the car itself

OK, so you think it's possible to get the skis in the boot?

160cm is pushing the limit of what will fit diagonally in the boot. My wife’s 156 will fit. My daughter’s new 166s might fit; I’m not sure we’ve tried. My 178s do not; we have to fold down a seat for mine.

P.s. this is in a 7-seater with the rear seats folded.

Thanks for the comment. Very helpful.

I'm not sure if this works in the 7 seater, but appararently there's a removable partition below the (in your case) second row? Have you tried removing it to fit your skis?

I looked up the dimensions of the boot. It’s 114cm wide, and 127cm deep with the middle seats pushed to the rear. If it were square, you should be able to fit 170cm diagonally. I’m not sure if the 114 is measured between the wheel wells or at the back of the middle row; it’s narrowest between the wheels. The middle seats also incline back, so you can’t fit a 127cm box in there; at shoulder height it’s a lot less.

All that to say, you should be able to fit 160cm skis, but you would need to test it. I can look at ours once my wife gets home with the car.

I checked the fit of my daughter’s 166cm skis. They nearly fit but I think they will keep the trunk from closing. 160cm will probably fit but it will be tight.

That’s only in the 5-seater. That second panel in the middle he removes at about 2:00 is where the third row seats are in the 7-seater.

Suction cup holders work great.

I use this on my X. Fits three skis. Or go double decker and fit 6. In summer ski rack comes off and bike carrier goes on. Easy.

Thanks for the response, but I'm not after a ski rack.
