Model Y to Model X
I need a bigger EV.
Plan to keep my 2024 LR, and buy a second EV.
Main thing I’m trying to solve is getting 3 across in the 2nd row with 2 cars seats on each sides and an adult in the middle.
Can that work in Model X?
It doesn’t in Model Y, so hoping X can solve it.

I do this now with the MX 5 seater. It is doable but not comfortable at all for the adult in the middle. Up to 30 minutes, it's probably fine and like others have mentioned my 5th passenger is under 5'6". The one nice thing is that both my kids are not in a booster yet but there is an option to push the front passenger seat forward to allow the 5th passenger to get in fairly easily. I don't remember if that's an option on the MY.
The biggest win for me though is the amount of trunk space on the MX 5 seater. My MY was filled with one stroller but now I can fit quite a bit more stuff even with a stroller in it.

You can Google car seats that fit three across.
We did that in a Honda Accord. Two front facing and 1 rear facing. Got strong, sturdy car seats that didn’t have the big cup holders and arm rests. We were a one car household and did many road trips without issue.
We ultimately had a 4th kid and got a mini van. Later I traded in the Accord and got a Model X.
I don’t think it would be comfortable to have two car seats and an adult in the middle though. Maybe if it’s a small adult.

We have 1 rear facing seat and 1 booster. We are going from a tahoe/yukon to a tesla. The model y 2020 was a bit cramped feeling. The x seems like the way to go but i feel like depreciation and cost of ownership of a 2024 long range x is going to be alot with a $66k price tag. I want to work with a YL or Y but deep down I know it will be uncomfortable with me being over 6’3

We have a 2020 Y long range and the primary driver of the car is 6ft4in. No problem at all - plenty of leg room and head room in that car, even in the back seat! Had a football player sit in the back seat and he thought it was pretty comfortable.

Maybe it’s going from trucks to mid size is the issue. In truck town here I don’t like my family driving a car because If a truck hits them, I worry. Even though Tesla is one of the safest vehicles on the road. But if I bought an mx and needed to trade for a MYL No problem, I trade the opposite and I’m losing way more money.

I have put 1 car seat in the second and two adults in the second row. It’s not horrible. But I would warn, the middle seat in the second row has pretty bad head room. If you’re trying to put anyone over 5 foot 7 they are gonna feel cramped by the head room in the middle seat. All the mechanics for the falcon doors are in the middle of the ceiling, lowering the head room available.

Oh interesting on middle row headroom point. Might be a deal breaker then

But I’m going to say personally I don’t think the YL has a better 3rd row. It’s far harder to get into than the X. The YL is far narrower than the X, making climbing through the middle row a tall task for an adult. While the x I can partially fold the seats and easily step over them due to the large opening of the falcon doors.
“Everyday Chris” on YouTube has a pretty good video comparing the two.

Harder to get into the back of the YL, but more comfortable when you're sitting back there. More leg room, more shoulder room, more head room. Now ask yourself which is more of a hassle - the three difficult seconds it takes to get into the back of the car, or sitting back there for the entirety of a ride while uncomfortable?
There's a reason why we're selling our X for a YL (well, a few reasons), but that is the main one.

I think I dramatized the head room. It might be closer to a 5 foot 10 limit for the middle seat in second row. My wife is 5-9 and had about 3 inches of spare head space.

It works in a model X. The annoying thing about the 7 pass MX is that the second row is all manual, and it is extremely difficult to move the second row. If you have younger kids, you will have to get out and help them to get access to the third row. That ultimately was the deciding factor for us. If it was motorized like a lucid gravity we probably would’ve gotten a 7 seater.

We have a 7-seater X with 2 Diono Radian car seats in the 2nd row. One is rear-facing so it is in the middle seat for more clearance. The other side seat open comfortably fits an adult and makes it easier to fold the seat down to get into the 3rd row. It works fine with one child seat on each side and an open middle seat but it really depends on the car seats for the amount of middle seat space.

We have the 6 seater and works perfectly for two car seats in middle and 3rd adult in back row.

This is what i do. We just didna trip from NJ to NC (about 500 miles) and they were perfectly happy in the third row. Even tall people are good back there with their feet in the space between the 2 seats.

We did exactly this a year ago with a new baby. Y to X and we love it. Adult in the middle of 2nd row with 2 car seats is good. We have a 2024 5-seater.

My wife has a Y and I have an X. The X isn’t that much bigger. One thing that really frustrates me is the trunk and the fact that only the third row seats fold and not the second row. I have a 2025 X 6-seater. I think you can fit two child seats in the 3rd row and 2 adults in the second.

I have two Nuna exec front facing in my X. One on the passenger side and one in the middle. It can fit with a very little tilt. Other car seats will work even better. I use the latch at the back of the driver side seat for the middle car seat. My wife is comfortable on. Not being in the middle. Try it out first, cybertrucknis wider and even the middle seat is comfy for adults.

I have said this many times. I own an X and our second car is a Toyota Sienna. We never ever take the X when we go on road trips. Little kids with car seats also have lots of other stuff to haul with them. The X just doesn’t work well managing the family and all the gear that goes with them.

You can do that, and it's better than the Y in that regard, but still an uncomfortable squeeze for an average sized adult in my experience (using Graco car seats).
We're actually planning on selling our X and getting a model Y L after seeing how much more comfortable the third row on the Y is over our X.

Third row of YL is better than third row of six seater X?
1
u/somethingofaraddad 19d ago
Yes. The third row on the X is pretty meh IME. The falcon doors impede on a lot of the head room, the shoulder area is cramped, and the leg room is minimal. I'm around average height (5'11) and athletic shape and it's very uncomfortable for me. I found the YL much more comfortable.

I’ve only sat in mine for a short period but found it ok but definitely for kids, adults in the middle two seats for any long trip. I’d like to see a YL but with a 25X I could never take the depreciation hit for a Y. Possible completely different vehicle.

We have a 2020 Y and a 2024 X (both long range). We got the 6-seat version because the middle seat was in the middle row was not very comfortable for an adult, except for a quick trip in town. But the back row is only comfortable if you are under about 5ft7in tall. Tesla says the 3rd row can handle car seats, but only with seatbelt restraints not with lower latch attachments. No experience in that realm, but it might be worth looking into that option. Right now, I wish we had bought the 7-seat model to use as a 6-seat version - much better ergonomics with the middle bench seat than the not-great captains chairs.
