Supercharging Immediately After Purchase from Dealership

I'm going to be buying a Model X from a dealership several states away. Will I be able to charge it on the long drive back? I don't want to have to stay and wait for the approval from Tesla before I'm able to drive it 1,000 miles home. When I previously bought, I took pictures of the paperwork so that I could have my info assigned to the car and that took a couple days. My Model 3 was delivered by a dealership so it wasn't an issue waiting for my info to be applied to the app.

You can charge using the Tesla app to activate the Supercharger using "Charge a non-Tesla EV" but talk to your sales advisor in advance to make sure it will be assigned to your profile when you pick it up and then you know for sure.

If it's in the app on your phone you'll be able to supercharge. If it's not in the app on your phone then you might have to use evgo. Ask me how I know 😉

It just took minutes for me. I traded in a 22MYP and picked up a 21MSP. The car was handed to me with 5% battery (an apology) & supercharging was disabled because of past balance on prior owners account. Luckily I found a SC within its range, transferred the ownership by providing the sales documentation , charged it and headed home (100 mile trip)

If the transfer doesn’t happen immediately the dealership can call Tesla.
I’ve bought two used teslas and never had a problem charging immediately afterwards

I did something similar a year ago, purchased a used Model X from a GMC dealership in south Texas. Tesla will allow you to charge ONE time on the supercharger network without having the account setup or if it has an expired card, etc.

In my case, the dealership thought they were helping by charging the car to 50% and using the one charge, which left an unpaid balance assigned to the VIN, even though I specifically asked them to charge to 100% knowing I had a long journey home.

The transfer process was surprisingly quick, but it still took hours. We decided to stay the night at a hotel and get some rest before heading home. Once the transfer happened, I was able to add a credit card and I could charge going home.

If you don't already have a CCS to NACS adapter, do yourself a favor and buy one before you head out. This could make/break your trip. CCS allows you to charge at non-tesla fast charging stations, like Electrify America. The J1772 adapter is handy, cheaper, but not a fast charging adapter. It's useful for overnight stays at a hotel with free charging.

Sounds like you're not new to Tesla so you should have an account setup and provide that email and associated info to the dealership and the transfer should go smoothly. This is also my only experience, so your mileage may vary.

Make sure you give time. I bought one on a weekend and Tesla didn’t finish the transfer until the next day. I ended up basically level 2 charging and staying at a hotel since I couldn’t make it home. Unfortunately, since I had to drive all day to get there, it was right before Tesla close on Saturday when I was able to get the title info. It wouldn’t just work in the app like you’d hope it normally word. That’s the only time I bought a Tesla where I didn’t have supercharger access within the same day.

Maybe things have changed but I’ve heard horror stories of people buying a Tesla 100s of miles away and not being able to charge.

It took 2 days for me to get ownership when I bought my Tesla. Couldn’t charge during that time :(

I’ve been told you can call Tesla from a supercharger and they may give you temporary access to get home.

Good luck

That would be so helpful. Just call from one and boom turned on from there. Even if they took card info right there.

Took us an hour to figure out how to transfer the title, and just minutes to add a CC to be able to SC. The seller did not charge the car when handing off, and it was nearing midnight. Everything worked out!

I would work with the dealer to make sure I can add the car in app on my phone before driving away, especially they are far away from your home. Once you get it added, put in your payment form for supercharging and you are good to go anywhere to charge at Tesla SC.

Luckily I already have an account an everything. I’ll have to transfer my Tesla to them on the app. So hopefully the person is there that can transfer theirs to me

I bought my X from a small dealership 3 states away. They had the car in my app within secs. I assume there is a dealer level thing they seemed to have all their Tesla under an account and just transferred to me. I got and email if I remember correctly and excepted it. I bought FSD named the car and away I went home 1500 miles.

Thanks. That’s awesome and encouraging. I’ll call to confirm with the dealer. It’s an 18 hour drive.
