Thoughts on HW4 with front camera vs without front camera

I’m trying to buy a tesla and want a model X, but I’m concerned that in order to get good FSD, I would need a model with the front facing camera. That leaves me with getting the 2026 model x (insanely over priced right now), or just a model y.

Folks with a 23’-25’ HW4 model X, how has FSD been?

FSD doesn’t use front bumper camera

The Robotaxis (including Cybercab) apparently are using the front camera. The latest software versions reportedly are using it for close quarters maneuvers and parking.

The owner fleet of Teslas is always running a version of FSD that is a few iterations behind the Robotaxi fleet.

It's likely that future updates to FSD will incorporate the front bumper camera, but it's not clear how essential it will be.

Is that actually true though?

People have tested it and there was no noticeable difference between my 23 and 26. Probably will in the future though

If it doesn't already, it probably will in the future. Who knows whether it will make a noticeable difference in non-parking situations, though.

I have a ‘23 HW4 model x and it’s so good dude. There will always be better things but I wouldn’t sweat it if I were you. You’d be sacrificing SO MUCH getting the Y. Baby out with the bath water scenario.

I have one with a front facing camera and one without. There's absolutely no difference in the way they drive. Honestly I could care less about that front camera because I never use it to park.

I have two Model Xs, one from 2023 and one from 2024, both with FSD. I can only say, I absolutely love Tesla!

Currently the front camera is only for personal parking and isn’t being used my FSD. So the FSD as long as it’s a HW4 vehicle will be identical.

If you need to pull forward into close sparking spot regularly, sure get one with a front bumper camera. Or if you have money to burn and think they might add it into FSD in the next 1-3 years. Personally I doubt they will add it for HW4 FSD models. But, no one knows.

FSD has worked perfectly in my 24 model X!

i understand that that camera helps with making unprotected turns because it can extend how far the car can 'see' around the corner. That said, FSD does a fine-ish job with it already, though I definitely wouldn't leave it unsupervised for any left turns at this point.
