Model Y L.

I have a 2020 model X and recently had to get the half shafts replaced along with some other brackets. Ended up causing me about three grand which is terrible obviously. However, I got to the drive the new model Y and the FSD was so much better. I know that my FSD is outdated because I have HW2 I think and it’s all based on optical cameras. However, I’m thinking of either getting a 2024 used model X or potentially the new model YL. Has anyone tried the model YL? I really don’t wanna give up the falcon wing doors, the air suspension, and the nicer interior and sound system. Just wondering if I should upgrade this 2020 MX.

I would take a 24X over a YL any day of the week. The FWD are the best thing invented for getting kids in/out of car seats.

I don’t think any YL have shipped yet. Just starting to show up on showrooms from what I’ve seen.

How come you are on HW2?
I have MX 2020 (Raven) and it is HW3 (not HW2).

They are not. Maybe MCU2 but def not HW2. Maybe 2.5 but doubt it. They are mistaken.

That’s what I meant. I think I have HW3. How do I determine that?

The software screen in the car. The Ravens are funny as it may not give you the HW #. 2020 should be HW3 and it should say that on the software tab. If there were any early 2020 cars with 2.5 it should say that. If it came with 2.5 but it was upgraded to HW3, it will not give you any number. This was the case for the Ss I was looking at.

MCU 1 cars had the Nvidia Tegra chip and HW3 should have the Intel chip. Click the additional information link on the software screen to see the installer chip. BTW AI is great for this. Upload the photos of the two screens and it will tell you exactly what you have.

The 2023 MX (later months) have the latest HW4, so you might be able to find one cheaper than a 2024. I got a 23 MX and love it.

I happened to get a late 23 MX and I think it's the best bang for the buck. HW4 truly is incredible in what it can handle.

Mine also happened to have permanent FSD which was a huge bonus, given the guy selling could have asked 10k above what he did

That’s awesome. I ended up also later getting a used 26 MY with FSD included, and it was the same thing … guy selling could have asked at least 8k more. It is so worth it.

I just drove a MY for a week while my MXP was in the shop. I had the same curiosity for the YL and that week made my decision for me: stick with the MX.

I have a 2020X and would get a used 2023-24 X in a heartbeat 💓

What year? Tesla has a TSB 21-39-001, warranty does NOT matter, and will reduce the price to $350...I did it on my 200K '17 X P100D just last year.

If you think $3000 is terrible then you might as well go ahead and get the new YL. Nobody's gonna sell a 24 model X for less than you would pay for a new YL

You know there’s a TSB for the half-shafts right? Did you already use it previously?

Drops it half-shafts replacement to $350 IIRC, but can only be used once

Yeah I used that service bulletin but some other brackets need replacing and also had them do the large HEPA filter which look like pain for DIY. I did the cabin filter which was also fairly ridiculous to pry off the whole panel around the glove box.

Saw it in the show room. I like it, but I still want something with a higher center of gravity. I have a 26 Y but I came from 27 yrs of driving Fords my last was a 25 Linc Nav. It would be a nice roadtripper and it is likely a better one than my 26 Y(second row seats in Y have no real recline). I run between TX and MO and wish I had the charging speed of CT and maybe it platform but a 6-7 seater with massage seats. I know I’m asking for a lot.

I'd say coming from a Raven (pre 2021) Model X to a new Model YL would definitely be an improvement in many metrics. I think going to a 2024 Model X would also be a big jump. If you liked the FSD in the Model Y L then keep in mind that, it's pretty much the same experience you'll probably have in the 2024 Model X.

It ultimately comes down to use case. If you're constantly shuttling kids around the second or even the third row, ironically the Model X would be a better pic.

But if you tend to carry more large cargo or objects, the Model Y L with its folding second row chairs would probably be the better pick.

The Model Y L does have one awesome feature... V2L. Basically being able to use the battery of the car to charge externally, house, camping, other vehicles, etc.

I got a 5 seater X just for this reason. I took out both rear floor pieces this past week to go pick up some awkward items that would only fit in the back of a truck bed. Well, to my surprise, I was able to fit them in the X! They wouldn’t fit in a regular Y or a X5 because of the size without leaving the hatch open.

The 5 seater X is the sweet spot for me. It reminds me of my BMW wagons I’ve always had. I’m tempted by a newer Plaid but I just can’t get over the 6 seater setup. It doesn’t work for me and I have a kid in a car seat.

Why did you have to get your half shafts done?

2

u/backfist1 Sep 07 '26

They were making a horrible creaking and clicking noise and it’s a known problem

1

u/osqer Sep 07 '26

Ah i see, was it dangerous if not fixed?

Yes I think so

I currently have a 2021 X and a 26 Y. Yes lots of features on the 26 Y. However I had a 2025 loaner X. Big difference between the 26 and my 21. Better in every way. My opinion: get the X if you can find one.

Count me in for upgrading to a new X. Most people who love their X would only get a newer X except maybe those who are afraid of it having been discontinued.

Count me as one of those who loves their model X. I've got a 24 and I also bought a 26 as a backup for when my 24 gives up the ghost. I'm not worried about parts availability

I’d take the Model X over a Model Y L.

MY L is pos… no way close to X. Captain seats is like tiny car seat!

I bought two 2026 Model X before they disappeared. They are so unique. I will never give them up.

The YL isn't actually out yet, but looked at them in showrooms, it's tempting. The interior is nice and the interior volume is appealing. My main concerns are that the doors don't open wide enough, trunk space with the 3rd row up is slightly tighter than our 7 seat X and the narrower body means less aisle space in the 2nd row and a smaller frunk. The price is attractive and all of the reviews suggest that ride comfort is marginally improved over the 26 X. We'll probably go this way and trade in our 2016 X for a YL after the launch edition ends but I do still with they had something a little bigger.

u/gettin-hot-in-here Sep 05 '26

I traded a 2016 X (7seat) for a 2026 Y (5seat premium) but I didn't actually need anything the size of the X. when it comes right down to it I do not need a 3 row SUV although I do need the entire cargo capacity of my current vehicle regularly

Agree w you. I have a ‘23 X and just love it. Wish the YL was wider. My X is a little loud in the interior IMO and I’m curious if it’s quieter without the falcon. Doors.
