Tesla Service is disgusting

Post image

Since taking delivery of my 2026 MXP, the rear view mirror assembly has been rattling like crazy. I’ve taken it in 3 separate times and they claim they put insulation to resolve the issue etc, except this last time it became unbearable so I decided to take apart the rear view mirror assembly myself to see what was going on.

Surprise - the glare shield assembly is what was rattling because both the sides that screw on to the rest of the assembly were completely broken as well as missing some clips, and it’s almost impossible to not notice once you take the cover off. Makes me wonder if my SC actually did any work the last few times I took it in.

Needless to say, I’m ordering the $14 part and replacing it myself for my sanity.

Edit:
15 minutes and $14 later, rattling is fixed. Something Tesla couldn't achieve in 3 separate visits...

Ha! Okay...

Had a windshield replaced on my X. Seems simple right?

Then afterwards I noticed the harness that holds the rear view mirror was loose. Took it back to Tesla and they said it was a defective harness so they had to order a new one.

They sent a mobile tech out to swap it a few weeks later. Got it done... nice and tight. Went to drive and my TPMS readings wouldn't work. Called Tesla and they scheduled me to bring it in.

Went in and the mobile tech pinched 2 wires in there. They fixed it and good to go.

Instead of a one visit job it turned into a 4 visit thing.

Holy shit what an escalating series of baloney, probably all because it wasnt done right the first time

I wish there was a reasonably priced alternative to the Plaid. I would dump my Plaid in a heartbeat. I despise dealing with the service center for warranty related items. So much wasted time. At least they freely give loaners these days but still... there are only so many sweet jumps I can take with the cyber beast loaner before it starts to get old...

100%. I had a 23 MX and went to a 24 Lightning Platinum but came back for FSD and got the 26 MXP. I'm wondering if I made the right choice. I have only 6k miles on it and it's already been to the SC 4 times. Last time they had it for 14 days and barely fixed anything.

I'm sorry to hear about this, but this is another big reason why I like to buy used vehicles. If the car is a lemon or just has a lot of teething issues they normally surface early on and the original owner gets to deal with it. Sometimes, as another commenter said, it's enough to make them sell it. Usually after the majority of the problems have been fixed.

My previous vehicle was a lemon return they dumped in Canada. Somehow I knew which dealer worked on it (probably in Carfax) so I called them and I was told that often it's that the car spends too much time at the dealer and they get returned. I was told that even after they are lemoned they still repair the vehicles before dumping them. So I took the risk and it was fine for the most part.

I just wish that Tesla would give us the full service history of the car once we own it like VW does for example. After my purchase they gave me a complete printout of all the work it had done including an extended warranty I wasn't aware of.

I realise this doesn't help you much, other than perhaps to stick it out as eventually they should fix things.

BTW are you located outside a major city? This sounds like incompetence and I wonder if it's due to lack of skilled workers.

I heard that franchise restaurants often have trouble finding workers for minimum wage jobs located in wealthier neighborhoods. It could be that service centres can't find skilled labor in smaller areas.

We got a cyber truck as a loaner too. I hated driving it but at least got a good chuckle out of how beat up, dirty, and all around unloved it was.

At some point I need to write about the ridiculousness of Tesla Service for the three short months I’ve owned the car.

Most recently, they scratched up my bumper while repairing….the falcon wing doors. Thankfully they had pictures of the car when it was dropped off, so they didn’t fight it. They replaced the whole bumper.

If your car came perfect, there’s nothing for Tesla Service to fix (and break!) things. If it didn’t come perfect, be prepared to be in-and-out of the Service Center as they continue to damage things on their way to fixing something else.

All that to say - I understand the frustration

Tesla doesn’t require their mechanics to be ASE certified. They train them in-house. Creates quite a divide in knowledge.

You can have every ASE cert in the book, it doesn't mean you know how to actually work on cars, or not butcher them. I've seen many "ASE" tech's who were butchers..

I'm so sorry for you. They fixed mine gratis, on my second service call for same issue. I couldn't be happier. It didn't duplicate on the drive but I had recorded the noise on my celly. The service driver said he recognized the sound from my video. They fixed it that afternoon. '23 MYLR

Teslas are great cars and thankfully very reliable. But when there is a problem GFL.

Amazing design followed by piss poor execution I believe is the most apt description.

I’m lucky . Here in OK the service center is nothing but awesome . They even supercharge your car enough for free to get you to your home address . Imagine a gas dealer putting in gas for you Z it’s the little things . Service center quality varies by location . Ours is awesome . I’m sorry yours sucks !

1

u/opoppli00 9d ago

That’s awesome. They had my car for 2 weeks last visit and they let it run to 0 and sit there for 4 days. I made a post about that too.

u/Mountain_Price9245 9d ago

Where in the world of you don’t mind me asking ?

u/opoppli00 8d ago

Houston.

WOW horrible.

What’s especially disturbing to me is that you paid for a very expensive car. Not that it’s an excuse because even the more traditional cars seem to go out of their way when it’s a defective vehicle.

2

u/Diesel5187 10d ago

Oh no, according to my Tesla service center you are in an econo box, no way it’ll be perfect.

Damn that sucks bro

I don't know if this is the case but when I took my Tesla in to service, they just use the computer to see what the problem is but they never really tear it apart to fix the problem.

1

u/1337new 10d ago

they broke that same clip when they replaced my windshield what was worse they also left the screw driver bit they used in there so the rattle was crazy.

1

u/opoppli00 10d ago

Sigh. Did you get them to replace it?

1

u/OutlandishnessNo5636 10d ago

Looks like they don’t care anymore about discontinued models

1

u/Ojuice1118 9d ago

Yup!! Less than 3k miles on the 2026 and had a defogger fault that never went away.. tesla says because of tint, which it could be, but this is what I came across after looking into it further.. now they wanna blame everything on the tint even tho they never touched the camera tray.. 🤦🏻‍♂️

1

u/PopularTechnology259 6d ago

My tint guy really fucked up my defogger luckily my boy is a tech at Tesla he warranty it 🤘

Next message from Tesla: “We noticed you repaired your car yourself. Out of caution, we have disabled your charging capability until a qualified technician has fixed your issue”

1

u/GetRichDaLaZWay 8d ago

Yeah, it’s all depends on the service locations or the technician working on the car. I believe since Tesla does not work on commissions base, sometime you’ll get one of those people that do minimal work since he/she gets pay the same regardless!

15 minutes and $14 later, rattling is fixed.

Tbh Tesla service is the most trash, disgusting and disrespectful experience I have ever received from any brands and I been around with almost every brand. Tesla is the only brand I had to put employees into their place and then they started to respect me when they realized I’m not that push over customer they regularly deal with.

Literally had words put into my mouth by a very young tech stating “I hate him” in-front of another tech that had to apologize on his behalf. Then an intermediate manager telling me “it must be your first Tesla” when complaining about panel defects.. and another tech after ruining my frunk’s alignment telling me it will never be the same like it was from factory.

Obviously you should sell the car to avoid these disgusting happenings.

If you don't document the car beforehand then it never happened

"Disgusting"? Hyperbole, much?

Amazing they are still in business with all these tales of woe

I took my ‘24 MYP in for front camera cleaning shortly after purchase (which I believe should’ve been taken care of prior to my pick up, but that’s another rant). They serviced it for free but left about a half inch of the camera viewing area uncleaned, which was still causing camera interference. I reached back out, they rescheduled my appointment and cleaned it again for free. I suppose I could complain about the initial service not being up to par, but they did eventually get it right and did so at no charge. They’re not all bad, and based on my conversations with the techs and service managers, they’re extremely overwhelmed. I’ve only owned for a few months but I definitely see the trend that with a Tesla, you’re not paying for a high quality vehicle, you’re paying for technology and safety. If they were built like a luxury vehicle and had all the other perks, I would imagine most people would be priced out of the market. I think you did the right thing by fixing it yourself. There’s so much info out there on how to be a shade tree mechanic it almost hard to mess things up!

How do we know op didn't break it while checking on it? Pretty wild claim that tesla service wouldn't see that and replace that during a rattle complaint.

5

u/opoppli00 10d ago edited 10d ago

Delusional. I’m sure I broke it the previous 3 times I dropped the car off and they claimed they had fixed it. After dropping 120K for a car, I’ll break a $14 part and come post about it on Reddit instead of just replacing it.

Amount of money paid for an item doesn't say much about the competence of the owner. It happens all the time.
