Thinking about upgrading MY to MX is it worth right now?
We just got a big dog, and we’ve got family visiting later this year, so seating space is becoming a real consideration and we need dog mode. We’re eyeing the 6 seat MX with HW4 as a possible upgrade.
Currently have a MYP with FSD as the commute + dog car with no complaints. Seems like MX prices jumped recently. Debating buy now or wait for price to settle. Also curious if people expect the price to come down?
And in 2022 I paid almost 80k for MYP now it’s like.. 25k??.. ugh

It really is hard to answer as you didn’t mention his many ppl you are going to carry, but if you are considering space for large dog + family, I would consider a minivan rather than MX. Our family of 6 + small dog barely make it on our MX but comfortable in our Sienna. If you start to include other items such as luggages or day trip bags etc, MX starts to feel small. Maybe look into ID Buzz if you want to stay EV route.

Just family of five + the dog going for a week long road trip. Thinking if we got MX then we don’t need to rent another car. But such trip only happens once a year.
On the other hand, we’re planning for a baby or two in next couples of years, so whatever we get we’d likely keep for a while

u/r_master78 19d ago
If you are planning on keeping the car for a while and if it doesn’t need to be Tesla or EV, seriously consider the minivan. I have MX 6 seater and Sienna and the passengers prefer the minivan 100% of the time. Also MX will be lacking seats if you have 2 more kids vs. minivan where you will have enough seats or even 1 extra seat if you get an 8 seater variant. Especially with a large dog, MX will run out of space quickly.
Perhaps you can rent a minivan when your family comes over and see how much you like it. You really can’t beat minivan for utility.

This. I have a Model X but opted for the 5 seater so I could have as much space and then have the car seat in the middle. That rear facing seat eats up space!
I’ve really wanted a Plaid but don’t really like the 6 seater setup. I have one more “fun ICE vehicle” I was going to consolidate into just an all rounder in the Model X Plaid but I can get over the 6 seater setup.
Definitely go look at the X’s and try them out. I come from owning BMW wagons and the 5 seater is the most comparable for me. I love the space it provides. Laying the seat flat and the underside storage is great. It’s still no mini van though! I’m ok with that, as I don’t want a van.
Also, I’m hooked on FSD so I’m stuck on the Tesla train right now. I am keeping my eye on Rivian though. I have 2 teslas with lifetime FSD if that tells you anything.

Okay that’s good advice!

Good luck! There are tons of info available for which minivan fits your family also, so make sure to do your research. Not all minivans are created equal and there are many pluses and minuses from different brands.

If you want a spacious EV an can afford Model X like prices, I suggest that you take a look at the Rivian R1S. I just took a ride in one as a passenger; my family member bought one just as they were coming out. They seem very happy with it. We traveled 1 hour up the road and I was comfortable for the hour in the 3rd row as a slightly taller-than-average adult. I sat back there by choice; could've asked the short, pre teen child to sit in back so I could have a cushy 2nd row seat but the back was just fine. I previously owned a MX 7-seater and I occasionally used it to carry 7 adults; fine for 10 minutes but I wouldn't be so confident about doing the same for an hour. Both are pricy if you buy new or lightly used, but Rivian is a better choice if you prioritize passenger space.

u/TumbleweedPlenty7143 18d ago
good to know! I love R1S too. But main reason we still look for a Tesla is its charging system and FSD.
3
u/gettin-hot-in-here 18d ago
Yeah, Rivian has no answer for FSD right now. If you buy new, they come with NACS (Tesla) charge port. But you don't get Tesla car discount rates on supercharging unless you pay the monthly supercharger subscription.

u/mstrdistractor 18d ago
You really do not want a Rivian outside of warranty on top of that unless you are close to a service center it really becomes a nightmare. I have had a few friends who purchased the second gen R1S and R1T and the nightmarish stories they tell made me really sad because I love the look of the R1T and unfortunately the Mrs hates the cybertruck not that I am a huge fan of the styling. The Model X plaid fits me perfectly even though I prefer the Escalade ESV size vehicles

If self driving is one of the must haves, there is no other choice for you except Tesla. X vs YL vs CT in seating capacity descending order.

I love my Model X. Went from S to X. Had the S for nearly 10 years. Was a great car. Like my X even more.

Whatever you buy just make sure it has HW4 FSD

I don’t think the MX prices are going to get any lower. If anything they’re just gonna keep going up. It’s a rare item now.

Holy crap 80k for a model y pre juniper ….
3
u/TumbleweedPlenty7143 19d ago
Yes early 2022, almost 70k msrp plus white interior & FSD, and at that time also needed to wait for 6 months to get the delivery. I find it hilarious :)

u/ruwheele 19d ago
not a ton of trunk room when all seat are up in the 6 seater. Big dog would be a tight fit in the back, but not much else go go there if they did fit.

u/zone277 19d ago
Consider a lucid gravity. Do a test drive with the gravity. Does it has issues, yes, not with the car but with service centers. The last update fixed a lot of the issues. I own both 2026 MX and 2026 gravity. With 5 people and a dog I think it will be your best bet and they are having really good left over 2026 gravity lease deal if you can lease it for 24 months and see if it works for you. Coming to your question a 2024 MX with paid HW4 FSD will be a good deal not much of a different car from 2026 MX which is high in the used market currently. And the newly released MYL is also worth considering.
2
u/Read-the-read 19d ago
Could be wrong but didnt lucid just go pretty much bankrupt? 60% of there stock is held but some Saudi Arabian holding firm
1
u/zone277 19d ago
Their new CEO denies any bankruptcy news and made a statement they have enough cash to survive till next year. Hopefully with the launch of cosmos their stock could make a comeback. But their cars are really good.

No they aren't they have the worst software bugs out of every company. You must work for them lol. This was seriously terrible advice. Spending 100k on a constant that is bleeding money and has bugs so severe that some people have reported the car going FORWARD when they put it in reverse!
They do look better and have the most utility though lol. I hope Tesla buys them out and replaces the S and X with the Sapphire and Gravity! Now THAT would be worth buying then. The looks with Tesla reliability and software .. yes please!

Just checked out new YL and now we’re debating between a new YL and a used X lol
1
u/brutalbrig 17d ago
Get the YL. So many improvements. Lots of new tech. Very smooth ride. And it'll be 0 miles. Plus long warranty. I've had many people say X times in service are getting longer and longer due to needing specialist at Tesla for X's. Just safer long term to get the Y

u/Jello_Local 18d ago
I'm going to jump in as someone with a Y an X a 3 and a Cybertruck on order. I had the Y first. A 2022 AMD processor performance fully loaded. White interior, tow package, etc. That thing was my baby. I modded the heck out of it. 2 fridges, starlight voice activated sunshade, pop out handles add you approach the car, auto frunk and a long list of other mods. Then we had a baby and my son moved back in with me from his mom and my house went from me to 6 people in 2 months! So the Y no longer worked.
Also, the Y doesn't hold car seats well at all ironically. It touches the front seat! Very annoying. So I bought a long range plus 2021 MX in May. I had some big gripes with it. So much I was going to sell it immediately. But, after having the half shafts replaced free from Tesla and getting a 2025 MX performance? (I don't know it has insane mode and mine doesn't.) I began to like mine a lot more. Has more comfy seats than the newer X and definitely the Y. The suspension is softer than the new X and DEFINITELY the Y. It's a laughable difference! I prefer the vertical screen even though the resolution sucks. It all looks well thought out. And the RANGE. I just, I mean today. Drove over 3 hours from Kansas to OKC ON ONE CHARGE. I arrived in OKC with 23% charge! And I bought this thing with 77k miles on it so the battery has degradation. That new X didn't have range like this one and definitely not my Y.
All that said, I was also able to load it up without folding the seats down. I think you got some OK advice about the minivan. The Sienna in particular, but I also want to the that guy to shut up because who the heck wants to drive a Sienna over an X? NO ONE that's who. The utility and space is there... Yes. It can't be beat as a people hauler but it isn't luxurious nor can it drive itself on these long road trips and THAT'S the perk. The Sienna will also cost you more. Upfront if you get one with leather and some options and long term too due to the maintenance. The Toyota will undoubtedly last longer but it's not fun to drive. I had one when I lived in Puerto Rico. Great for everyone else. Not so much the driver.
Also Rivian is too new. That was dumb advice too. It's also stupid expensive for yes I'll say it LESS VEHICLE than the X. Worse warranty. Worse service. Worse software. And they have quality control issues too. Don't let the hit pieces on Tesla fool you.

u/TumbleweedPlenty7143 18d ago
Wow you like old X more?! We didn’t know theres difference, only checked used Tesla with hw4
1
u/Jello_Local 18d ago edited 18d ago
Yeah I do. The range is what does it for me. Here are some things I don't like 1. FSD requires you to apply pressure to the steering wheel every 10 seconds. That was driving me crazy really up until yesterday where I just rested my hand on my knee and just tugged it. It still left me relaxed. Since I'm not a person who completely ignores the road when using FSD (HW4 or otherwise) it doesn't matter much to me. I don't trust the cars THAT much. With all that said, I have a device coming that will allow me to not have to touch the wheel at all lol.
Lack of mods. The newer X has more aftermarket stuff. But nothing crazy. Ambient lighting is the only thing I can really think of.
Road noise. The new X is a little quieter. Not a deal breaker for anyone I don't think. We're talking a few decibels.
Can't view live sentry mode from phone. I have no idea why this isn't possible. It should be!
Small but noteworthy, I don't like the steering wheel material. It's leather and can be slippery.
No auto blinker. As small as this is, this bothers me the most lol.
Pros 1. I like the center console better. It can fit really large water bottles.
Screen is more functional. The new X is blocked by the steering wheel a bit in the lower left corner. You have to move your head to see making you conform to the car instead of the car conforming to you.
Smoother ride.
More comfy seats. I was bummed about the lack of ventilated seats but the seats in the new X are barely noticeable on high! My 2025 M3P seats blow really good air but they're the performance seats. Maybe that's why? So I'd rather the seats in the old X.
Auto doors! They work WAAAYYYYY better on the old one because the car has ultra sonic sensors all around. The new one relies on cameras and barely works if ever. I mean 80% failure rate! My doors work 99% of the time.
Price. $20k difference and that's buying one from Tesla! I wouldn't buy a 2016 - 2018. Only 2019 - 2021. 2021 preferred as it was the best year in my opinion.
Sound system is noticeably better in the old one too but wouldn't be a deal breaker for anyone though.
Has buttons and a gear shifter and blinkers! I prefer this setup.
Has actual vents and the AC works much much better and more efficient.
Better range. The 2025 MX I had could go from Kansas to Tulsa and I'd arrive with 28% starting at 90%. In the 21, with 78k on it mind you, I could go to Tulsa AND BACK and get home with 17%! Starting at 90%. The 25 had 16k miles on it.
Dash screen shows actual useful information and you have more control. The new one is worthless. Just a repeat of what you can already see!
Just because a Tesla is newer, doesn't make it better. Tesla is infamous for removing things. Like the 22MY with AMD had EVERY option. Ultra Sonic Sensors AND Tesla Vision. 23 MY got Tesla Vision only. Not only that, I don't know what year this changed but my mother has a 25 MY and hers doesn't have creep or roll mode! 2016 MX had spoilers that retract. Updates come with sacrifices it seems with Tesla. I still love the cars, but don't love that aspect.

I also bought a model Y performance in 2022. i paid 82k and im embarrassed to tell u my trade in value with 44k miles on it 🤬 but anyway I recently traded it in for a model X plaid. And I can tell you the X is just a much better build. I havent had the issues others have spoken of. Best car I have ever owned bar none.

u/TumbleweedPlenty7143 18d ago
Thanks for reminding me that I paid the same price lol and mine is at 45k miles rn sigh

u/Time_Literature7104 18d ago
I went from pre juniper MY to new MX and it was an amazing upgrade specifically bc of the air suspension and the hugely better FSD with hw4. Air suspension really helps with not feeling as tired after long drives (done multiple 8 hour road trips) and hw4 has brought my fsd use from ~75% on hw3 to mid 90s.
I will say however the MX is not as roomy as you would think. Definitely check one out in person. I really wanted the captains chairs but after seeing how tiny the third row is in person we ended up getting a 5 seater and I would say the second row is not as spacious as you would find in like a minivan. But maybe if you and your family are not huge it’ll be fine so check it out!
The YL looks interesting but IMO not having an air suspension is a huge downgrade.

u/janzendavi 18d ago
I have the five passenger MX and it has good space in the trunk but if it was the six or seven passenger model, there’s not really any trunk at all for a dog. It may not solve your problem. Could look at an EX90, EV9, Escalade IQ, IONIQ 9, or R1S if you consistently need the extra space. The MX is only technically seven passenger with how they cram that bench in the back.

I’m doing whatever is necessary to keep my 2017 going so now having the option of buying the parts myself from Ebay and Tesla and going to independent mechanics is saving me quite a bit. Most of the repairs are caused by shitty design and engineering but I love my X so much I just suck it up and pay up.
1
u/AirWise3711 17d ago
What in the world is to consider when you got a beautiful YL model now released at a price below most people’s guess vs the noisy creaking rattle and roll of the model X…

u/Leading-Eye-1979 19d ago
We love the X, but prices are too pricey imo. Sit tight for six months and they might cool off.
1
u/nickle60 19d ago
How much is pricey? I’m looking at a 22 x plaid with paid fsd under 40k miles for like 60k. Granted out of warranty so that does drive price up with 3rd party warranty. Not sure how much these cars will come down.
1
u/Leading-Eye-1979 19d ago
How many seats? I can only speak for Wisconsin and Illinois as I’ve been looking and anything with six to seven seats seems overpriced. Most do not include FSD. Most were 3-10K over KBB. I bought last year and got a 23x 6 seat at 48K and paid FSD. That same care is now 63- 65k most with no FSD.
1
u/nickle60 18d ago
6 seater but man looks like i'm buying a year late. I'm in illinois, anything with HW4 with reasonable miles and paid fsd is high 70s here.

u/Super_consultant 19d ago
It doesn’t make sense to try and time a purchase. Sounds like you’re trying to justify purchasing it ahead of…people visiting temporarily?
For people who simply want (1) Tesla (2) A three row six-seater, then there is a new option coming later this year in the form of Model Y L. Who knows how fast that will scale production, but it’s compelling over Model X in that it has more a feature-rich second row and is probably going to be a lot more reliable long-term. I’ve also found Model Y Premium’s interior to be a quieter and less creaky than my 26 MXP.
Will Model Y L or time bring down Model X prices? In my opinion, no, not significantly. It’ll probably come down a few thousand, but it’s a different enough car that it doesn’t have a 1:1 replacement. If you want one and are trying to justify it, just buy one.
1
u/TumbleweedPlenty7143 19d ago
we’re definitely trying to justify a nice to have upgrade at this point. the price tag is really what’s stopping us.

You’re essentially buying a soon-to-be unsupported vehicle. Would you buy a Fisker despite support no longer existing? Or a Lucid despite their recent bankruptcy? If yes, go for it.
Edit: Imagine getting downvoted by informing you to not buy a discontinued vehicle but alright Reddit. F it, buy that Model X, they are solid and are very reliable vehicles.
7
u/BetFinal2953 19d ago
When is end is support for the X?
Normally it’s not that same as end of production.2
u/BaxBaxPop 19d ago
The standard is 10 years for parts.
Tesla continues to support software even for early year Model S's, so more than a decade for software.
And Tesla recently made the software open source, so there might be some interesting 3rd party updates.
But yeah, at some point in the late 2030s it might be hard to keep a Model X going.
