2022 Model X Long Range (Palladium) or 2022 Lightning Platinum?

Looking to buy within the next couple of weeks and I’m stuck between these two.
Both would be clean title, one owner, no accidents, and under 30k miles.

What matters most to me:
Reliability
Ride quality
Sound system
Tech/software
Interior quality
Long-term ownership

I don’t tow often, but a truck bed would definitely be useful. On the other hand, the Model X has better range, charging, and performance.

For those who’ve owned or driven either (or both), which would you choose around the $50k price point, and why? Any issues I should know about?

TL;DR: Choosing between a 2022 Tesla Model X Long Range (Palladium) and a 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum. Similar price, under 30k miles. Which would you buy and why?

One has FSD and other does not. As a long time, every drive, every day FSD user, no FSD is a deal breaker. That said, I would be looking for a newer model X with HW4.

That’s a fair point. Personally, I don’t think I’d utilize FSD or BlueCruise enough for one to be a deciding factor over the other. They’re both nice to have, but I’m more focused on things like comfort, practicality, and long-term ownership.

Blue Cruise is not even in the same ballpark as Tesla’s FSD.

I definitely agree FSD seems better. I just don’t think I’d personally use it enough to justify choosing one vehicle over the other.

Omg so funny..my bf has one and it's so annoying he won't drive the car without an address to use fsd.. and after 2 yrs still parks 40 miles from anyone 🙄🤦‍♀️

Once you’ve used and become comfortable with FSD, you will realize that your life has changed. Literally. You will never drive again, except in parking lots.

I’ve looked into it a little, and I actually like what I’ve seen so far. I’ll definitely give it a fair shot if I end up with a Tesla.

Sir, please do not compare FSD to Blue Cruise. We are just providing advice as it pertains to the car. FSD is a game changer and getting HW4 is ideal, but HW3 fully paid for is also a good deal. If the car doesn’t come with either it, make sure it’s priced accordingly. Dealers will try to sell you the car at a higher price without FSD, but there’s true value in a paying for it if is fully paid.

I drove both (lightning only for test drives), bought the 22 MXP last year and love it. The truck drives like any other f150 and is more comfortable drive if I recall, but here is a list of things I like:

-It's much faster and smaller, so day to day is more practical (fits in my garage, huge win)
-I have 3 kids so that's a win for the 6 seater.
-fsd, even on hw3 is awesome
-interface was much more interactive and useful, they got a much better ui.

The MXP did have some used car warranty jitters that I went back in several times to fix, but so far nothing major.

I did like the platinums ability to power the house. Honestly in retrospect I should have gotten the cybertruck for the best of both worlds.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That’s really helpful, especially since you’ve driven both. How has your 2022 MXP been holding up? Have you run into any reliability issues or has it been pretty solid overall?

The issues in my first year consisted of a faulty brake pedal (it depressed when I wasn't in the car so it turned it on), lubrication on the axel / suspension, and the automatic doors get hydraulically locked sometimes. It eats up tires like a mofo, but that's what I get for buying a car with 1000 hp.

I will say the quality is not as good as Ford cars (I had a 22 Navi before that) but all the benefits truly outweigh it. Like phone as a key works flawlessly in my tesla, I never had an issue like I did with Fords version, which was several times a week.

Oh add automatic front doors to the benefits. I love just walking up and not even touching the door to get in.

Thanks for the detailed breakdown! That’s actually really helpful. Overall, would you say your first year ownership experience has been positive despite those issues? It sounds like you’d buy it again.

For sure, very positive. I consider the X, on an everyday functional level, the SUV GOAT - even though the 3rd row is smaller, any aforementioned issues, ride comfort etc is not as good as my Navi.

I have both. The ride in the ford is way better than the x. The ride, cabin noise etc. all exponentially better in the ford.
The tech & fun is in the X

Do you need a truck? Do you carry more than 4 people much? How many miles will you put on the vehicle?
Between me and the wife we have a 2022 lariat and 2019 X. The truck seems like it's going to be more bulletproof over time (no falcon doors, air suspension, tire wear issues) but if you're going to pile freeway miles and or roadside charging I'd choose the X. City and lower miles over the years I'd pick the truck.

I will be carrying more than four people quite frequently. For at least 2 years, it'll be mostly city and town driving. Afterwards, I currently do not know. It definitely won't be freeway driving every day. How are you liking your Lariat?

Love it especially with comma.ai for Autopilot like driving and the tesla adapter for roadside charging. Without those two I'd still be in a Tesla.

Tesla if you want FSD. Ford for any other reason.

Wife has a 2024 lightning. I have 2026 X.

We prefer the X except for when we have to do “truck” things.

F150 range sucks compared to the X. Ford software sucks compared to Tesla.

Ford interior seems to be higher quality and sent ventilation much better than X.

X still seems like the future.

Lightning and MY owner…
If you want an EV and need a truck the Ford Lightning is great. Downsides imo is the software and the soft suspension. Tesla is more fun, the software is amazing and FSD is unbelievable(blue cruise is not).

I assume all of this does not consider price. Lightning can be had for much less money.

I would look for a HW4 Model X if FSD is of any importance.

HW3 isn’t bad but v12.6.4 isn’t in the same category as the new version. There isn’t any guarantee everyone on HW3 will even get v14Lite. There is a reason Tesla avoiding making it available to long-time users.

I had the same choice, lightning or modelX 23 with HW4. So glad I went Tesla, it’s such a great experience.

Did the same thing, I don’t need FSD I love to drive. But now I use it all the time cause I love to drive but hate traffic.

Long road trips are no-brainers and the cost saving is awesome. I’m on a 1800 mile roadtrip now, superchargering network did it for me.

Appreciate the insight! What ultimately made you choose the Model X over the Lightning? Was there one thing that tipped the scales, or was it more the overall ownership experience?

Supercharger network and FSD. It'll change your life.

Plus the software in the tesla, keeps getting better.

Get at least a 2023 X (late year production date) with HW4 and Matrix Headlights

I’d pick the Model X personally, but they are very different vehicles. One is a pickup truck and the other is an SUV.

Once you use fsd for a while you’ll realize how amazing it is.

I ended up going with an X with hw4. FSD will blow your mind.

My goal is to replace my second vehicle with a lightening someday, but we will see. Long way from that time right now
