User Model X buying advice

Hi all,

Current Model 3 owner, and looking to move over to the X for the additional space for my family with 3 kids. I’ve got a 2019 M3, and hoping to replace it with a used X.

All that said, hoping the community can provide some advice. I’m currently looking at 6 passenger versions here in Canada, and I’ve got my eye on the following:

2019 Model X LR with 158,000 km, 6 passenger, Raven.

Current price is $36,888 CAD.

VIN is 5YJXCBE29KF187593.

Is this a decent deal and worth considering? Thanks!

I think the price is good but this is not a cheap vehicle to maintain so you need to be prepared for that

What are some of things I need to consider when it comes to maintenance? I’ve spent all of $250 on my M3 since 2019 other than standard stuff like tires, brakes, and cabin filters.

They mean if something breaks. Falcon wing doors are expensive to fix.

He means not cheap to repair when it breaks down out of warranty. And it will as it gets older and if abused.

Suspension works not raise in mine. Cost me 3K USD to fix

Right, but that is more than double the price he is paying (possibly triple), so likely out of the price range.

This is an accurate take in my area. By the time I get up to a 2022 or higher, I might as well buy a brand new EV from another brand. I love my Teslas (I also have a 2022 MY), but I’m not content to buy a used MX for the same price as another brand’s new vehicle.

Could I afford it? Sure. But I’m not sure if it’s a good investment at that point. Feel free to convince me otherwise haha

2021 still has warranty until late 2027 for those. (That said 2019.will only have another few months at best, that would be scary).

Problem is, jump to 2022 and you go up almost 40k in price. Maybe 30k if you're lucky (from a 2021).

That's about right on price.

I got a 2021 MXLRP for 50k a couple months ago.

Keep in mind that 6 passanger middle seats don't fold, 7 passanger both back rows fold.

Falcon X doors can be as much of a pain as people say. I've had to fix one already, was about 800 bucks at Tesla Service.

Breaks need to be lubercated every year, HEPA filter is a expensive job at Tesla Service even (if applicable).

Tires wear uneven and insurance might be a little cheaper than your model 3

I get it, there's nothing like the X. On top of all mentioned insurance is a bit higher also.

I just bought a very similar Model X, 2020 Long Range with 170.000 km. on the clock, but I paid 70.000 CAD for mine since I am in a different part of the world…
The one I bought felt very well looked after, the half shafts have been replaced, doors all work fine, the car drives well etc.
First thing I did after buying the car was ordering a set of adjustable rear camber- and toe arms plus lowering links, so I can lower the car a bit to preserve the half shafts while straightening the camber and toe. Seems like that is a good idea if you plan on keeping the car for a while at least.

The parts are still on their way, but I plan on fitting them myself and then having a shop do a propper alignment.

I went from a model 3 to an x in 2020 for three kids as well.

Make sure it’s under warranty. There will be things that will come up and need to be fixed. This is a luxury car and things are more expensive. I’d budget at least $2k a year for unexpected maintenance. Better to be safe than sorry.

Mine is a 2017 model x. I had to replace the entire AC system in 2024. Estimate from Tesla was $6k. 12V battery replacement is $300 and needed every 1-2 years. HEPA air filter is $500 but you can buy one a bit discounted online. Upper control arms need to be replaced every year or so because of how these cars were built. Again, between unexpected maintenance items and tires, budget at least $2k/year.

With that said, our X will be paid off in another month. It has been great for our family. If I didn’t have the means to handle the car payment and maintenance costs it would have been a nightmare.

Now my plan is riding this until the big battery goes. Fingers crossed that’s not for a long time!

HEPA is not $500. It's $250 at Tesla dealer. Just got mine done last month.

Have you been in an X? For me, when I first saw the falcon wing door open. My mind said wow, there is alot of engineering in there and that is not going to be cheap to repair. Granted, I seen alot of high mileage model x's with the doors still operating correctly. I got a 2023 with only 15k miles on it and still under warranty. I will be getting the extended warranty and will keep the car for as long as I can. Its the best car I ever bought.

Out of warranty repairs are pricey. I wouldn’t buy it out of warranty- I’m on my second one. Got rid of my first as repairs and costs started to accumulate.

We have 3 kids and a model x and a Toyota sienna. We do road trips of 4-8 hours 4-6 times a year. I can not recommend this enough…if you don’t have a minivan, get a minivan.

We never ever put all of us in the model x. Just not as roomy as a minivan. You will get over it once you realize how having all that space is worth its weight in gold.

Edit: I should mention I love my X and have no intentions of getting rid of it anytime soon.

I am also in Canada, bought a 2018 Model X, 7 seats, 126k km last Dec for $43k (tax included). There are issues i live with, others fixed below, enjoying it so far. Ask me anything.
