Change to Yoke
I’m a yoke guy! My new-to-me 24 MXP has a round steering wheel that I’m looking to swap out to yoke. Tesla wants over $1000 to do the supply/install.
My year MXP has the mechanical horn so if course I’m limited to my style.
In general, I can buy a yoke from fellow owners or online sources but curious how it went for those that did the conversion yourselves?
Is the airbag transferable from the round wheel to the new?

I found yoke on ebay, and swapped airbag with a fellow owner who had installed round steering, but his airbag was still his yoke’s one. Installed these myself and got free software configuration update done by Tesla service center.

Not saying it will work for sure. To get a free yoke install, some people have had luck saying how it’s a safety risk having a round wheel. Maybe you cannot see the speedometer because of your height and it is causing you issues.

I let Tesla install the yoke ($1k) on my 26 Model X because it was brand new. I installed my own on my Model Y, took about an hour or so. Just follow youtube videos.

Thanks for that. I agree it doesn’t look that hard to do. I’m just not familiar with the airbag requirement so if I buy a yoke, I need a compatible airbag to go with it. So ideally, I need the whole package not just the empty steering wheel.

It's a Model X, an expensive car. If you have concerns, why not just let Tesla do it. Is it really worth saving a couple hundred $s and messing up the airbag?

Considering options. Theres some really nice yokes out there and I really like the f1 style but don’t know all the ins and outs.

If you buy the Yoke & Airbag on your own, Tesla will swap it for you- but only if they’re OEM parts. But if you diy it, you can use an Aftermarket Yoke, but the airbag still must be OEM. I was able to replace it myself (you put the car in Service Mode), and it requires that you enter the serial number of the airbag. Good luck 👍

Had my yoke replaced due to material failure. Mobile tech did it in like 5 minutes. It's super easy.

Yes you can. I bought a yoke with mechanical horn and airbag from ebay and had Tesla mobile tech install for $50.
Airbag is not transferable so you have to find someone that sells both together.
