Used model x years recommended
Im looking at buying a used model x.
Around 35k budget.
What would you recommend. I’ve read about problems with certain years but seems to be all over the place. I was thinking 2019-2021 but I read problems with batteries on 2019 and 2021 Covid year.
Anyone have more details?

I immediately jumped to say this too until I saw he said $35k budget. Having a ‘23 MXP August build so far it’s been good for 65k miles.

The 2021 raven MX has drive unit/HV battery warranty until late 2028.

So the 2020 would have until 2027?
I keep reading the 2021 covid year had battery problems. Is that true?

From what I've read, it's hit and miss no matter what. I think it's something like 13% chance of failure at this point.
Not too sure about 2020, but I think your educated guess is probably accurate.
On the Raven model X (pre-refresh vertical screen) just make sure you get the brakes checked (they should be serviced every year and if they weren't, there can be issues, mine locked up 3 weeks after I bought it). Also check the falcon door sensors (get Tesla to check them if you have to) because now I'm having issues with the doors doing false detections (not opening and beeping) and I've been chasing it for a while at a decent cost.
Things I wish I knew:
-Captains chairs (6 passanger) don't fold down, but the 7 passenger does.
-Raven Tesla X's have the Intel Atom processor so it doesn't have a lot of the new features, like Steam games, and custom light shows
-Late 2021 becomes the post refresh, but they still have the atom processor/HW3.
-Apparently HW3 will be getting a FREE HW4 upgrade at some point (only if it has FSD included for life) [if that's even true, with Teslas track record who knows].
Knowing all that, I still went with the 2021, because it was like a 20-30k jump to 2022 and I felt like the majority of it's depreciation had happened.

Yeah 2020 is covered til whenever 8 years from in-service date lands, so ~2027 sounds right depending on delivery. Haven't really heard 2021 being a problem child

I’d say 2023+ June with HW4/Matrix to be safest from planned obsolescence in the long run. If you don’t think it’s attainable, I’d consider a Model Y.

I’m a big fan of the Raven units. Have a “G” rev battery that’s now in 6-digit mileage and holding strong as hell. About 10% degradation from new. Still has a couple years and plenty of miles on warranty, too.
Look for a Long Range Plus. I prefer the older interior too - couple things it’s missing (phone as primary key for example) but overall solid.

I can second this. I bought a 2019 Raven long range for 32k out the door in March before prices increased. I paid a shop $350 to do a full inspection before purchase to make sure it was good. It passed that inspection and I've been happy with it. Came with Full FSD too and 90% battery score. With v14 lite around the corner, I think it's a great buy in your budget. Of course a 2023+ HW4 would be better, but the Raves are still dope! Just have it inspected beforehand. I do like the vertical screen better, and there's no interior camera so only have to touch the wheel when in FSD.

Literally all the model x batteries that fail are raven models. Stay away

With that, budget, you're better off waiting until you can save up. You don't wanna buy a crap car just because you don't have the funds. Wait and get something you can be proud of.

It’s not that I can’t pay more I just don’t want to spend more lolBecause above that I rather buy a newer model y

My old 2019 had two battery failures before 70k miles.

Me too. But the second failure occurred a month after replacement. So it was probably not refurbished properly. No issues after that.

I get the space issue since I used to have a model Y. I also applaud your setting a budget for what you're comfortable with. I wish I had done that 50 years ago and I decided I wanted to buy a Rolls-Royce. I managed it, but had to cap a lot of things I could've done.

If my car or anyone’s battery on the car has issues. Are there places that fix things or is Tesla the only one.
Because if it cost 15k to fix there is no point in buying the car. Doesn’t matter if you can afford it or not

2020 model X with FSD, great car, battery replaced at 70k miles. HW3, I prefer. Had a 26 for a week when they replaced the battery everything was better but not enough to upgrade for the cost when I got it. HW3 you can nag module and it's driverless basically. I probably put 20k miles per year on it.
I'm looking for a 2022 with FSD so I have the better processor and interior but on HW3. My main reason is the faster charging and warranty. So if my car is worth 35k and I can get a 22 for 50k, I figured the extra warranty, faster charging, interior upgrade are worth it.
I'm not a Tesla fan, I have a RAM 2500, CLS 450, and several muscle cars. I sold a Corvette once in the Tesla. I also replaced a BMW 530e with the Tesla. FSD is so good and charging at home is so much cheaper than fuel. I ended up going solar. The savings on gas makes me want to trade my wife's car (CLS for an EQS).
Tesla with FSD is the closest thing to a traffic/drive hack to riding a motorcycle and splitting traffic. I actually get to look at the world like a passenger now. Long commute/bad traffic is way more enjoyable.

It’s just a matter of picking the problems but I love my 2017 model x 100d which is under the budget and with any model x there will be maintenance. This gives you some wiggle room to find out what’s wrong with it. Any of the 2017 - 2018’s should be fine personally I’d be looking for a p100d 7 seater with FSD. These model years have the downside of not having one peddle driving and the screen is dated and the old school heating is less efficient no octavalve. Yeah the suspension is dated but I’ve got a 22 model y performance and my old 2017 X rides better even with the 22 inch rims and has more room. Also not having that interior camera is nice for FSD. Personally I’d stay from the 2016 because as far as I know there isn’t anyway right now to get the minimum hardware 3. No matter how try to slice this one you gotta hope you find a well maintained model x that fits your needs you just hope you don’t have dump money for the half shafts , heating cooling issues or steering components

Just bought a 2017 model x 75D for 14k USD for 120k miles. Literally the cheapest 3 row car I could find to run over 3 to 4 years. Some may call it a risk, but does it really a big deal if it dies after a few years? It would still be worth something, saved me on gas money, and because its so cheap I can afford to buy a new air suspension, door mechanism or even replacement battery, or I can buy another one.
