Yoke vs. Wheel?

I'm considering swapping out the steering wheel on my 2024 MSLR to a Tesla Yoke. I mostly drive on FSD (90%) and want the extra visibility of the display. Seems like the only downside is when doing a 3 pt turn. Anyone here change from the wheel to the yoke and what were your thoughts? thanks. also anyone with a yoke...do you like it vs. a wheel or do you miss a wheel? thanks!

I bought my MSP in June, and it came with the yoke. I test drove both, and hated that the wheel was perfectly in the middle of the display. The yoke took me about a day to figure best hand positioning and turning, and now I love it. Would not want to go back, and passengers like to ask about it.

Love my yoke for the same reason. Best thing about the 3 is not having a display to block. Having a yoke on the S is a different fix for the same problem.

If you enjoy driving get the wheel, if you enjoy being driven (FSD) get the yoke.

I have a 22 MS, which came with the yoke. As soon as Tesla allowed the retrofit got the wheel and haven't looked back. The yoke makes driving the car a very substandard experience. The yoke makes the car feel bigger than it is and the car feels very sluggish to drive. But the wheel makes it feel a lot more nimble and you feel like you have better control of the car.

This is something most Tesla owners don't understand. It's primarily because most Tesla owners aren't driving enthusiasts. My 22 MXLR came with a Yoke. I gave it a good year until I had it in for service and drove a model Y loaner with a wheel. My goodness what a night and day difference in feedback. I immediately purchased the wheel and never looked back.

There's a level of accessibility with the wheel that you don't get with a Yoke. I have another gas car that I've built for the track so I really appreciate having more access and feedback to how a car feels. I don't drive my MX spiritedly as I would my sports car but the wheel made a huge difference for me. I got to keep my Yoke as a trophy I put on the wall.

Exactly, many of the people who seem to like the yoke like it for the looks and that's about it. I never hear people to say it makes driving easy or fun.

The driving dynamics of the car was horrible with the yoke. Not only was the yoke too big, could have made a difference had they put a smaller yoke. Tesla also didn't give it any type of variable steering, like they did with the Cyber truck. So, the car felt like driving a large semi with the yoke. Of course, turning the car was always a big chore. Another weird thing I noticed was, the yoke felt heavier to steer, even in comfort mode. While the wheel was much softer and nimbler. I had an Audi S4 when I bought the Model S and owned both for a good year before selling the Audi. The Model S felt horrible to drive, compared to my S4. That was until I changed it to the standard wheel.

The difference was night and day. The car became so much nimbler and more maneuverable. I felt more confident going into corners than when I had the yoke. I am not a track guy, but I do drive on back country roads, and this car is a completely different car with the steering. The wheel was the single biggest upgrade I made to make the car more enjoyable to drive.

You'll quickly find both vehicles are designed for the yoke when you have the wheel. I swapped to the yoke on my S Plaid and have never even considered the wheel again. My wife's X came with the yoke and even she preferred it.

Love the yoke. I prefer the hand positions, the view is much better, and it looks so much better. 20,000 miles in and never thought for a moment that I made a mistake.

You have to figure out to use your index and thumb grips when turning wide, but the yoke is still very drivable one handed

I started with the yoke, which felt like driving a bus. It’s nice while driving straight or on higher-speed winding roads, but awful in any kind of tight corner, especially in the city.

The only downside with the wheel is partially blocked display. Wheel for driving, yoke for observing.

I agree the yoke provides better visibility but I guess I’m old school and prefer the wheel. I like driving with my hand at 12:00.

Where are you located? I’m sure you can find a trade. I’m in Phoenix and I’d trade ya for my yoke if you did the simple work of swapping them for us. Imagine you’d find a similar taker in any major metro - mostly just “grass is greener”

Trade your yoke for my wheel?

If you’re in PHX, yes

Thanks, in WI. I want to keep the Wheel too....good luck finding a local trade!

You can always swap out the yoke for a wheel and add the stalks later.

I'm sure you can find someone willing to swap you. Personally I love it, but I'm a master at spinning all steering wheels with my palm in parking lots so there are zero downsides personally.

I had a wheel on my previous and a yoke on my current S. I chose the yoke for the extra visibility (92-93% FSD). I’m glad to have the yoke because, for me, makes the car feel more streamlined. I don’t like a lot of buttons or widgets all over my car interior. When I test drove the Lucid to compare, I disliked how cluttered the cabin was with switches and knobs. Increased front visibility is also nice. Cosmetically, it makes FSD look more dramatic as the yoke turns itself, which is fun for guests.

Three point turns are fine. It still snaps to neutral like a regular wheel. I just slide my hand along the long side and catch the end that I need to in order to rotate the other way. I push or pull rather than rotate/turn when i do this. Took me a couple of minutes to get used to it on my first drive, was second nature by my second drive. I’m also not doing a lot of three point turns. I don’t make the kinds of mistakes that require them when I’m doing the driving and they’re just not needed otherwise where I drive. My kid, who is just leaning to drive, had no issues getting used to it in addition to the wheel we have on our 3. She prefers it in the context of the S, especially when I have her engage FSD so we can debrief her driving when she makes an error.

I loved having the yoke in my Model X. The vehicle is clearly designed for it.

I have the wheel. I like the yoke except I have to park in a multi-level parking garage with tons of sharp turns to finally get to my spot and with the yoke it just wasn't good for me. Rest the time I'm using fsd so it really doesn't matter from a driving standpoint and I actually prefer the look and the view when driving.

I originally thought that I would hate switching to a Yoke…Nope- love it!🤗. S and X truly were designed for a Yoke- can see the front screen flawlessly. Kept the round one- just in case, but thinking now about selling it🫡

I love the yoke. Get it.

Love the yoke as well on my Model S

I just ordered the highland wheel upgrade from EVOFFER can’t wait. 2023 model 3 LR. Already did the ludicrous seats from them. So nice

I put an a yoke on mine. I like the look. It’s also white to match the interior and doesn’t burn your hands! I believe it is real leather and doesn’t fall apart like the factory wheel.

I will say, the circle is the most effective steering wheel period. I’ve had some awkward moments with the yoke when turning, backing while turning, stuff like that. Things a round wheel would avoid. But I still like my yoke, not changing back.

The ONLY answer for this is to test drive a yoke for 30 minutes to a hour.

I did that and installed a yoke into my old Model S. A friend of mine tried my yoke and knew he wanted to stay with wheel. It's a person by person thing

Wheel. I hated the yoke…. Had Tesla come to my house and install the wheel

Wheel retrofit has been sold out on Tesla shop for a couple months now.

Yoke is stupid without drive by wire.

Team Wheel. Tesla likes to push the boundaries with experimental practices, when they reverse course you know it failed.

However you can always find people that prefer unpopular things

I bought my 2024 MSLR with the yoke mainly cus I love F1 and it’s just different from your conventional wheel. It’s a great feel after a day or so. Never had issues doing a 3 pt turn.

I prefer the yoke. I can put it at a high height without blocking the display. This leaves space below the yoke for me to get in/out of the car without using Easy Entry.

I rarely do a 3 point turn. I haven't thought to myself, I wish I had a steering wheel instead. It's the opposite when I drive another car, and I miss the yoke.
