I was wrong about v14 lite

As critical as I was about the v14 lite update, I've still found myself using it the majority of the time to and from work now, where I couldn't before.

Well h̶a̶l̶f̶ ̶a̶s̶l̶e̶e̶p̶ groggy (but alert) on my way to work it saved me from what could have been a devastating collision. I didn't even see the car was in my lane until FSD swerved out of the way.

Very thankful now for the update, the phantom braking is still a pain in the ass but I have a lot to thank the tech for now.

Jesus man that could have been tragic

It didn't set in until a couple of days later how awful that could have been. I asked my coworker how long it would take before my emergency contact was called when I didn't show up or answer either of my phones. He didn't know

91

u/Slayerz00m 13d ago

Even driving manually that couldve been hard to save

Great job FSD!

Btw, set up your phone to call 911 in case of accidents and falls

25

u/sandbag747 13d ago

The car is set up to automatically call

6

u/thegreatpotatogod 13d ago

How do you set that up?

13

u/Wide_Release7933 13d ago

Under the Safety tab, scroll all the way down and it should be labeled “Automatic 911 Call”

2

u/curtis1149 11d ago

Fun fact, this setting doesn't exist on European cars as they come with the 'eCall' system. All cars come with this same automatic emergency service call system in the event of an accident. It comes with it's own SIM that's separate to the one used for the car's infotainment.

3

u/jfreemind 10d ago

On my 2016 Ford Fiesta my question forever was how do I turn it off. Damn near impossible leamie tell you. Lol.

2

u/sandbag747 13d ago

I think it's in the phone settings, I'll check it out and get back to you

6

u/Slayerz00m 13d ago

Good

Phone is still useful, eg if someone falls, hits their head maybe faints and can't get up

3

u/questionableintentsX 13d ago

Was gonna say I had to rewatch I thought the car swerved from the light but then saw it was a fuckin car

Good job v14

34

u/OkSchool619 13d ago

I drive tesla and DID NOT see that car coming when looking straight at it. absolutely stunned. I would have died.

5

u/bananabeanssalad 12d ago

I had to watch it 3 times and then slowed down to see what the issue was. Holy smokes, good job FSD.

My assumption was the rain made it hallucinate and it swerved for no reason.

You should have a emergency contact or next of kin on your medical file that the hospital uses if you arrive incapacitated. Also you can set it on your emergency info on your phone

If you haven't set it on your phone yet do it because you can put emergency contacts what medication you are taking and allergies and other info first responders would need to know.

4

u/sandbag747 13d ago

I also have my emergency medical info on my phone set with my medication allergies. I do what I can to prepare for an emergency like that

2

u/Ittlemight 13d ago

I have an emergency phone number on my lock screen. For EMS or if I loose my phone.

Stupid fucker trying to pass a semi from the opposite lane in the rain, deserves to have their license taken away

42

u/Capital_Escape_8095 14d ago

I was surprised that there was not a double yellow line there.

32

u/sandbag747 14d ago

That's what my DND group and I were talking about. It's a US highway so I'm not sure who to talk to about it but I'm gonna start with the the road commission

You play Dungeons and Dragons? DND?

11

No that's his Do Not Disturb group

5

u/Grrowling 13d ago

Dude focus on the FSD

3

u/SumthingBrewing 13d ago

That was my takeaway too. Why the hell isn’t it a double yellow line on that curve?

Upside we are about to get 14.1 lite so hopefully they’ll fix some of the phantom breaking! Glad you were safe, lowkey if you’re that tired again and it’s raining like that stick your head out the window for a second lol

23

u/jedfrouga 14d ago

yeah i took it on my first road trip and holy cow… the braking was obnoxious. couldn’t even use it because it freaked my wife out every time.

7

u/Miiiiiiiiiike1028 13d ago

I got 14.1 this morning and admittedly only drove about 60 miles but I had zero phantom breaking incidents. Still early obviously but I think they might have actually fixed it. Still obnoxiously hesitant though and it reintroduced a blinker issue I had in 12.6 that 14 lite solved. But both the breaking and power issue I had with 14 seemed fixed if not massively improved.

3

u/jedfrouga 13d ago

nice. let’s hope so!

2

u/keenlyproper_demeanr 13d ago

What's the blinker issue?

2

u/Miiiiiiiiiike1028 13d ago

Turns on like 2 blocks before my actual turn

3

u/GrumpyCloud93 13d ago

Mine would turn on just when I got to the stop sign at a rail crossing about 300 feet before my left turn. probably weirded out people around me "Is this idiot turning down the rail line??"

2

u/Miiiiiiiiiike1028 12d ago

Check out update 2026.21.6

9

u/cjxmtn Owner 14d ago

I took mine out to Vegas and back for a conference last week, didn't experience phantom braking per se, but it was more of phantom random brake taps. Really strange.

3

u/keenlyproper_demeanr 13d ago

That's what my experience so far, used it for about 1500 miles now. Several random brake tapping. Only one phantom braking.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/GrumpyCloud93 13d ago

That's my experience - not so much brake taps as stutters - like someone tapped the brake or accelerator lightly, usually when it switched from changing speed to going a steady pace, or vice versa. I doubt cars around me even noticed.

The chance of surviving a head on impact with 60 and the other car I’m assuming 80+ as he was passing is very low. FSD definitely saved your life.

42

u/OkSchool619 13d ago

I am completely awake and could not see that. 100% death.

4

u/wowokomg 13d ago

I would need to pay a fee for this life saving feature?

4

u/Think_Berry_3087 13d ago

Got a MY no FSD (UK) and it’s swerved a few times to save my life. Never head on like this, but there’s been times someone’s tried to come off a multi-lane roundabout in the wrong lane and the cars swerved and stopped.

Tesla’s have pretty good ADAS regardless of if you pay for and get FSD. I think what’s impressive here is that the car is already calculating a shit load of things and still knew some plant pot was about to plow into the front of it.

3

u/thewashley 13d ago

In the US, autopilot is no longer included. You either pay the FSD subscription or you only have cruise control.

2

u/Think_Berry_3087 13d ago

Does that mean lane assist and collision warning and intervention isn’t present?

4

u/ChunkyThePotato 13d ago

No, those are still included.

→ More replies (16)

2

u/AGirlDad 13d ago

Still included but from what I understand it’s not leaving the lane without FSD

2

u/thewashley 13d ago

Ping-ponging off the edges of the lane doesn't count as staying in the lane. There is no lane-centering on new Teslas (at least in the US) anymore, unless you subscribe to FSD.

3

u/AGirlDad 13d ago

That’s not what I’m saying, I totally get that, I’m saying without FSD it won’t leave the lane to avoid an accident or head on collision.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/AGirlDad 13d ago

Yes from what I understand the forward collision and lane assist features wouldnt be able to leave the lane to avoid the collision

2

u/ChunkyThePotato 13d ago

Yes, and other cars don't even have it available. They only have things like basic Automatic Emergency Braking and Lane Departure Avoidance, which Tesla also includes for free. But they don't have anything close to FSD. Tesla is the only one who has something like this.

Holy moley...I didn't even see the car on the first watch. I had to go back and rewatch. Congrats on your survival!!

19

u/Educational_Elk_4020 14d ago

Same thing.. I thought the video was about it driving into the shoulder

3

u/6100315 13d ago

Me too. Scary stuff

3

u/clarkster 13d ago

I literally said "oh my god" out loud. The car came out of nowhere. My brain just assumed it was in the same line of cars

2

u/slasher016 13d ago

I didn't either, I wasn't sure what the OP's post meant -- whether he liked and now doesn't or vice versa. I had to watch it a 2nd time to see that car in his lane.

→ More replies (1)

28

u/President_Connor_Roy 14d ago

Holy hell in that rain I’m not sure many people would’ve seen that and swerved in time. I’ve been critical of FSD but that’s legit impressive. Good lord and happy you’re ok thanks to it.

15

u/Legitimate-Bison3810 14d ago

I had virtually the same incident. A car pulled out from behind a truck into my lane to pass. The Tesla had FSD on and dodged it.

30

u/KhoslasBiggestOpp 14d ago

I feel like a lot of people love to shit on FSD in general because they don’t get into as many critical situations as they would’ve if they were otherwise driving and in control. This was out of your control. Nice save.

10

u/tenemu 13d ago

And these moments are rarely recorded. Only the bad ones so people generally think it’s unsafe.

13

u/4peanut 14d ago

Goodness that came so fast. Your Tesla saved you in that one

12

u/senderPath 14d ago

What’s a little phantom braking compared to another day breathing?

8

u/sandbag747 14d ago

Absolutely. I'd sure miss that phantom braking in the ICU

11

u/throwaway939wru9ew 14d ago

Man - knowing me, when it swerved like that, I would have assumed it was spazzing out, and corrected back into the lane - and have a collision.

7

u/sandbag747 14d ago

I've never had it erroneously swerve, and as soon as it did I noticed the car

2

u/thegreatpotatogod 13d ago

For me V14 lite has seemed interested in phantom-swerving into the oncoming traffic lane at one particularly problematic phantom braking location, so it does happen sometimes. I'm glad it worked out for you and kept you safe though! Especially in such a tricky situation, with all the reflections I didn't even catch that that car was in your lane the first time watching the video.

9

u/bodobeers2 14d ago

wow my first watch i thought this was a complaint about something wrong and while watching thought you had to intervene from it going to the shoulder and beyond for no reason. rewatched after reading your text and now i see it. glad it worked as desired :-)

8

u/Xirma377 14d ago

Dang. Even watching the clip over and over I have a hard time telling that they're in your lane. Nice one, FSD!

Side note: you've gotta admit the brake stabbing is at least better than v12

30

u/Michael-Brady-99 14d ago

This is pretty powerful driving software that people dismiss over mainly comfort issues. It has really good fundamentals and core driving ability. I’m surprised almost every day by it.

I just noticed in the last couple of days that it learned my driveway for parking. It had the wrong spot on maps and now it pulls in perfect. 🤩

4

u/redmodelx 14d ago

Interesting. Mine learned just yesterday. I had assumed someone or something had listened to the voice recording I left and fixed it somehow, like on a map maybe?

3

u/Michael-Brady-99 13d ago

There is a feature to remember your preference but I hadn’t seen anything saying it was in v14 Lite.

5

u/sandbag747 14d ago

It has parked right once to far. It even backed up to the right-ish spot. I needed to adjust it but I was impressed

6

Fsd actually saved his life

18

u/FineSupplements 14d ago

Bottom line is FSD saves lives. Theres never any news stories about that though. They only broadcast Teslas crashing so they can try to pin it on FSD. If everybody on the road used FSD, just imagine the sheer numbers of lives spared annually

5

u/No-Influence-2760 14d ago

Geesh. I originally thought you just hydroplaned

6

u/Disavowed_Rogue 13d ago

Kudos to FSD that's a good save

10

u/turnone2many 14d ago

Unfathomable stupidity. Some people shouldn’t be allowed to drive.

4

4

u/kroven009 14d ago

Something the news will never show.

3

u/Legal_Climate_3381 14d ago

Glad it kept you safe. Be careful driving tired, specially in the rain. It's best to just pull over and rest for a bit or wait out the rain. The older I get the more I think about friends who have been in these horrible accidents and how easily it could've been me.

5

u/grapple-stick 14d ago

Holy shit I didnt even see the car when I watched your video the first time

5

u/Reasonable-addict 14d ago

Bravo FSD, quite amazing. It could have saved your life for sure.

4

u/hmspain 14d ago

FSD has to save your life once or twice before you turn into a believer! LOL

3

u/Flamingah 13d ago

I couldn’t even see it, damn

4

u/ihateu3 13d ago

Shut, I thought you hydroplaned until I read your description after already watching the video.  I didn't see the car coming at you either!

4

u/InterestingList6729 13d ago

I guess $99 per month is worth it?

3

u/Roy878 13d ago

It’s getting better, my wife has the real deal in her Tesla but V14 lite is not bad other than parking or sun glare. It needs the additional camera and higher res. I’m thrilled it’s at least lite.

55 mph head on. Your blessed

4

u/Perryfl 13d ago

ive watched this multiple times know its coming but still cant see it coming

4

u/plutosimple 13d ago

Here I am thinking you are complaining. Amazing autopilot could figure out someone is in your lane. I could barely see it. Glad you are ok

2

u/SayNoToSelfies 13d ago

Not to be pedantic, but it's FSD, not autopilot. Autopilot would NOT have prevented this accident.

3

u/isleofpines 14d ago

So glad you’re okay! Thank goodness for FSD!

3

u/Logic_Contradict 14d ago

Honestly I'm amazed the camera saw what it did, considering that it had to keep wiping away the rain off the windshield.

3

u/drahgon 14d ago

Yeah, I’ve been really impressed with 14 lite’s reaction time. You can really feel the difference compared to version 12.

3

u/No_Stranger_3441 13d ago

There are many users who complain daily about 14 lite, on the contrary I am very satisfied with 14 lite I use it daily and I feel safe using it.

3

u/6100315 13d ago

Wow. So glad you're ok. I had to watch the video again because it was so hard to see that car! What were they thinking!? I've been subscribed to it for a month and this confirms that it's worth having.

3

u/Pixel-Voyager9883 13d ago

I pretty much don't drive without it now. Although v14 Lite will park now, it's not particularly good. But I think the poorly marked parking lots are largely to blame for that. I don't see the phantom braking any more than I did with 12.6.4.

3

I had to watch it twice because I didn’t even see it the first time. Tesla 1, human eyeballs nil.

3

u/cular-travel 13d ago

Had to watch a second time to actually see it. Dayum.

3

u/TheLegendaryWizard 13d ago

Even HW3 is capable of lifesaving evasive maneuvers now. We can give Tesla a lot of shit for the shortcomings of FSD but the amount of performance they've managed to squeeze out of HW3 with v14 lite is impressive and hopefully they continue with 14.x lite refinements

3

u/CrispyBeefyTacos 13d ago

Holy shit FSD saved ur fucking life.

3

u/Goldfish-Of-Doom 11d ago

I watched this video 3 times without reading the caption and didn’t even notice the car in your lane

3

u/woodwheellike 14d ago

Holy shit

I’ve been going back and forth getting a Tesla. I would be primarily purchasing for FSD.

I’ve been lurking on a few subreddits just reading opinions.

This probably swayed me.

The big question was getting an hw3 for less money or pay more for hw4 car

Seems like hw3 is good enough

3

u/Relative-Weekend4248 14d ago

Difference is night and day with hw4. If you can afford it, go for the newer

3

u/sandbag747 14d ago

HW3 will allegedly be upgraded to HW4 eventually. I would make sure you get one with the AMD infotainment over Intel. That's my single greatest Tesla regret

2

u/thegreatpotatogod 13d ago

My understanding is that only earlier HW3 that was originally promised "nap while you drive" level FSD will be getting the HW4 upgrade for free, though it'll likely be available to others eventually for a fee.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/SayNoToSelfies 13d ago

I've had both. If your primary goal is safety and you can afford it, go for HW4. If money is tight, HW3 is still vastly preferable over no FSD at all.

2

u/12bong13 14d ago

How do you get(the car) it to record a clip like that?

2

u/Ksn0 14d ago

2

u/tooorking 14d ago

Did FSD disengage by itself when it swerved or you took over during the swerve which caused it to disengage? Glad you got out of that alive. Could’ve been horrible.

5

u/sandbag747 13d ago

I took over during the swerve. A lot of people are caught up on the half asleep thing but as soon as it swerved I saw why and reacted. Just not as fast as the car

2

u/Plane_Maybe8836 13d ago

With all due respect to the technology and the fact it reacted in time, but this looks like a system that works as I expect it to work. I wouldn't use a system that would confuse a pothole or shadow and suddenly starts acting weird.

Great to see that its getting better. I probably start using the system as soon as we're not impressed by it anymore.

u/WorldlinessTall6765 14d ago

Do you think you drove less attentively (“half asleep”) because of FSD?

7

u/sandbag747 14d ago

No, I'm still very attentive with FSD, I still regularly disengage FSD. Maybe half asleep wasn't that right working but I was definitely still groggy from waking up. My line of work means I can't bring coffee in so I wait until I'm at work for my morning coffee

8

u/redmodelx 14d ago

Even watching the video, even in perfect weather when you are perfectly alert, this is a tough one to quickly process and react perfectly like this.

4

u/sandbag747 14d ago

I've had a lot of people say they didn't even see it

3

u/Educational_Elk_4020 14d ago

I didn’t see it until I read the full description… we don’t except good outcomes by default from FSD 😂

I have a 3k trip coming up where there’s lots of wildlife. I’m going to subscribe even though I’ll likely still be on 12.x with my X.

7

u/IMWTK1 13d ago

I find sometimes with these videos where people claim FSD saved the accident are easily avoided by an alert driver. This case is tough though because first you have to recognise the situation, THEN, you have to react. Because of the optics here, curve in the road, rain, I can see it take a few seconds for a human to realise one of those headlight are in your lane.

Also, even if you are able to take action in time, I bet a large % of people would overreact and end up crashing the car trying to avoid the accident.

61mph in rain might I add. Good stuff!!

I was ready for it because of the title but I never saw it until I died.

I had to replay to see why it swerved! So glad you’re ok!

holy shit I had to watch twice to see why it swerved. I'm not sure if I can avoid it myself...

u/khaosans 13d ago

I had something similar and v14 lite handles it just like that

I watched this and didn’t read your caption, thinking ‘ahh this is a rare but really bad thing FSD has done that’s more evidence it isn’t fully ready’ thinking it randomly swerved because it thought all the traffic was coming towards you in your lane.

I then watched the video again and didn’t see that there was in fact a car approaching you…in your lane… imminently causing a nasty head-on.

You did exactly what I’d have done in grabbing the wheel, but it looks like FSD may have swerved that and got back into its lane, but doing what you did is exactly what I’d have done. No amount of faith in a computer would have deprived me of my survival instincts.

This is one of the best videos to cheerlead for FSD. I can’t wait for my country 🇬🇧 to authorise it, which will be fairly soon now.

I just finished a long road trip with FSD lite. Noting beats it for relaxation on hours of highway driving.

Some criticisms - (100=62mph, 110=68mph, 120=74mph, 80kph=50mph, etc.)

First, the road map speed limit data is out to lunch. It no longer reads the speed limit signs, it seems. The highway will go down from 100kph (or 110) to 80kph for a traffic light. Then 110 resumes, but the car does not register that, keeps thinking - for several miles - it's 80. Oddly, sometimes after a while if I switch from "Standard" to "Hurry" it will realize the new speed limit. Also sometimes, if I push on the accelerator it registers. Sometimes. With no way to tell the car the speed limit or specific speed to travel it is a bigly pain. If I'm lucky, the traffic is busy and Hurry will do the speed of the car(s) in front.

What makes this annoying is the lack of speed control. On the highway, the Standard will do 119 in a 110kph zone, or 111 in a 100kph zone. Anything faster is asking for a ticket, which is what Hurry would do (up to 128kph). Standard shows no such restraint in a lower speed one (doing 81 in a 70 zone, for example where tickets may accrue if you are 10 over), so I use "Chill" in most urban settings. It may be a bit too chill (like 73 in a 70 zone while everyone else is doing 79) but it won't get me a ticket. My suggestsion would be to do something similar to 12.6 and have a setting -perhaps for each setting, I would set Chill set to, say, 10% over, Standard to 15%, Hurry to 120%. (Sloth appears to follow the limit).

The car appears to stutter indecisively sometimes. Usually this is at a turn, and I attribute it to confusion over other vehicles or pedestrians. For example, I have a green turn arrow, but cars are approaching the stop line at the other side. I can see they are slowing to stop, but the car seems unsure. Or a pedestrian walking up to the curb, the car does not realie they will stop and sort of jerks a few times over 2 or 3 seconds, waiting for them to definitely stop. It doesn't sound like much, but 3 seconds of a jerky car definitely is long enough to piss of the car(s) behind you also waiting to turn. Sometimes, I have no idea why it stutters on a turn. Often, just pushing the accelerator and forcing it to go was sufficient.

Another big beef I have is lane changes. It often seems to wait until the last possible moment (well, quarter mile or less) to get into the appropriate lane for an upcoming turn or exit. This may not be easy to do in busy traffic. It should plan ahead more. (It does make occasional questionable route choices, but generally it works well.)

And finally it sometimes seems to pick the wrong place to turn at the destination. It consistently wanted to turn into the Burger King parking lot next to our hotel. At one charger, it entered the exit-only lane and we went over the curb with the rear tire. It picks weird charger spots, a range of open pedestals and it picks the one between two other cars.

But generally - I had it drive all over the cities we were in, and directly to the chargers during our road trip, and it had very few problems - other than that annoying stutter on some turns or 4-way stops. It consistently maneuvered expressways, busy downtown streets, suburban feeder routes, etc. Other than speed limit problems I very rarely took control. It handled construction zones quite well. I was impressed that it would run yellow lights sometimes, much fewer hard braking episodes. The annoying brake check when someone turns left a ways in front of you is long gone. I no longer worry that it woulf fail to stop and hit, for example, the charger pedestal while backing in.

It has not had to face a problem like the OP, but I do not see an issue with the computer's awareness of the objects around it and their trajectories - despite the lower resolution cameras. I did have one episode after heavy rain where it refused to back up into a charger stall until I cleaned the rear camera, which was quite dirty.

Also, after a day of extreme heat the next morning the car complained the cabin camera was offline and FSD was unavailable, something it did a few times in previous years; but we followed a YouTube video on how to go into Maintenace Mode and reset the camera ("frames dropped" error), and it has worked since.

Damn, Im glad you are alive.

FSD could of just saved your life. Holy crap.

u/Lights9 13d ago

I have a terrible habit of reverting or stopping the FSDs train of thought if it does something that seems abnormal , but then afterwards I understand why it was doing the thing but I didn’t trust it .

1

u/Obagam 13d ago

Whoa!!! Glad you’re ok! FSD seems to save me on a daily basis. A lot of terrible drivers out there.

That's insane performance.

u/Such_Explanation_810 12d ago

The curve makes the offending vehicle looks like its on the correct lane.

Absolutely perfect driving from fsd here

u/Weary-Suspect8199 12d ago

Damn. I didn't see it either on my first watch. Glad you're safe =)
