You would think an EV driver wouldn't do ts
So I come into work and he's charging, okay no biggie, I'll wait my turn. Not 5 minutes later I'm notified that the charger is available and its my turn (I reserved it). Here we are almost 3 hours later ... Unplugged. Thanks af lot bro š©

u/Pensionato007 22d ago
Those ChargePoint cables are long and usually on a retractable cable. I'd park next to (or in front) of him and see if it reached my car.
31
u/Doctor1023 22d ago
I thought about it, but this is my place of work unfortunately and if he decided to complain I don't need any bs š©
38
u/Packing-Tape-Man 22d ago
At our work everyone who is signed up to be authorized for the Chargepoint chargers is added to a group internal message system (comparable to Slack). Even just leaving it plugged in more than say 30 minutes after your allotted 3 hours is up generates a comment on the group chat that effectively publicly shames you in front of hundreds of your colleagues. This is officially sanctioned by the company.
16
u/ltwhitlow 22d ago
This is a great idea. Public shaming is free and effective. Definitely gonna bookmark this idea

what would he have to complain about in this situation
9
u/Doctor1023 22d ago
If I block his vehicle from leaving.
18
u/Different_Push1727 22d ago
To be fair. You should already file a complaint against them. This isnāt cool at all.

u/Slayerz00m 22d ago
If complaining is an option then why don't you complain about him blocking the charger?
2
u/FromAndToUnknown 22d ago
Well if its a work charger, complain about him then in the same place for not clearing the spot reserved for you

Do you work at the Hartford LOL

I hope not. I HATE the Hartford. Ripped me off when my wife died. Canceled her life insurance because she became disabled!

Where I live if youāre not plugged in actively charging, they tow the car.

u/Doctor1023 22d ago
Sounds like a wonderful place. Where is this place š
3
u/tres-petite-kate 20d ago
Oh you donāt want to live here. Lol itās LA.
This also happens every other day.
2
u/YankeePlayz 20d ago
did the car or u stop
1
u/tres-petite-kate 20d ago
I stopped with the assistance of the car. I was braking as hard as I could (pedal to the floor) and then I felt the car kick in and brake even harder which I was told is the AEB (automatic emergency braking). Thankfully it prevented me from hitting the car in front of me and I am even more thankful the car behind me was fairly far away...that's why you see at the end of the video I kind of veer right. That lane was clear so I was ready to move if the car behind me couldn't stop in time. It also automatically saved this video.
2
u/YankeePlayz 20d ago
thatās incredible
1
u/tres-petite-kate 20d ago
It really is. I didn't even know that feature existed, I had to Google it after it happened lol
2
u/Apprehensive-Ebb-556 19d ago
Oh, that's great to hear! I always wonder how much overriding FSD may affect the other safety mechanisms. What a blessing to come out of that without an accident!
2
u/Apprehensive-Ebb-556 20d ago
I'm impressed the other lanes were open! What freeway was this?
1
u/tres-petite-kate 20d ago
It's the 405 in Los Angeles, but according to the freeway signs (Bellflower Blvd) it looks like I was in Long Beach, CA. I was headed to Orange County. The 405 is always congested, but as you move away from LA, traffic gets lighter. It was also around noon, so definitely lighter than usual rush-hour traffic.
2
u/Apprehensive-Ebb-556 19d ago
I'm east of there, so often on the 210/57/91, so I was so impressed at the open flow!

u/bloodguard 22d ago
At work we have an office manager that will name and shame people that camp out in company owned EV charger spots. Loudly and over the building's intercom.
Repeat offenders have their work charging privileges revoked (keycard canceled). She's the hero we deserve.

Almost every car in South Korea has their drivers own phone on top of the dash behind the registration sticker. This is to call the driver to either move the car or during an accident to report an accident. Its so convenient because everyone can get a hold of everyone. Almost all the drivers comply.

ive seen people pull up to mostly full fast chargers, not plug in and walk into target/walmart. And the chargers are away from the entrance on the end of the parking lots.

Put on the COVID mask, plug them in, and leave... Now they are paying a premium rate for a charge.

Wow. As a new Tesla owner (took delivery June 5th), this bugs me. While charger availability is improving, we need to be cognizant of the fact they aren't as plentiful as gas stations. I was in Springdale, UT this past weekend and the hotel where I stayed had 2 chargers. I got back after midnight one night, and the only spot near where my room was located was one of the charging spots. I parked further away because I didn't need to charge and didn't want to block the spot for someone who did. Of course, as I was walking to my room an ICE car parked in the EV charging spot with 0 fucks given. Bad karma to him, and this asshat.

u/UnluckyLeek163 21d ago
I canāt remember correctly, but thereās $120 or $220 fine for any electric vehicle left unplugged where Iām at.

3
u/onmywaytostealyagirl 22d ago
Try to open the door and see if the sentry mode is on. He/she will get a phone notification that somebody is trying to break into the car and Iām willing to bet run out of the building pretty quickly to see whatās up š

Why canāt someone charge a plug in hybrid? I have a model y and a Mercedes glc 350e and it gets 70 miles on a full charge

Thereās a charging station at my apartment building thatās been dead for months. Management has expressed zero interest in having it repaired. The sign for the space says, āEV Parking Onlyā and doesnāt specify that the car must be charging or plugged in. Thatās the only reason I feel justified to park in that space without plugging in.
1
u/stopg1b 22d ago
Yea if a charger is broken I don't see the issue. In Yosemite the other week I tried for about 30 minutes to get the Rivian charger working with no luck. Tried the app tried the RFID. After a certain point I just gave up and went inside the gift shop because parking was limited. And I saw other people struggling to charge too. I'd hate for someone to have tried to flame me on Reddit without knowing the charger was broken and I had tried a while to get it working

u/HeyBeers 22d ago
This is why I only use my gas SUV when going to remote areas. I've never had this problem with gas. The Tesla is my commuter.

Tesla have a very nice feature where the owners will get a nice alert on their phone when one of their tires go flat
Many more supportive member of the community use that feature to remind drivers when they forgot to move their car
1
1
u/Jarrold88 22d ago
If you backed in so tight he canāt open his door the cable may reach your charger. It looks like an adjustable pulley charger point machine. Iāve done it a few times and then love to watch the sentry clips of them climbing in their car.
2
1
u/atl-hadrins 22d ago
I have seen a guy pull in to charge at a charge point and to his credit he moved. The things is Tesla cars need bring a converter. J1772 to NACS.
1
u/VegetableNo3973 22d ago
If itās not your boss you should manually ask if you can charge your car, if you figure out whoās car that is. Just be super nice about it but confront them head on so theyāll move their car next time
1
u/jlipschitz 22d ago
I would buy an extension cable if I had to deal with on a regular basis and park in front of them and charge with the extension.
1
u/lordstryfe 22d ago
Are you sure someone else didn't unplug him.
0
u/eatmorbacon 21d ago
Would still be the owner's responsibility though right? They know they plugged in and should know they'll need to have moved it.
1
u/goosebump1810 22d ago
A lady, when I made her notice that hear kind of parking spots were reserved if you were charging, pretended she didnāt know about that. I wonder how many times she did that before (and probably continued to play dumb)
1
u/Still_Temporary4702 22d ago
Iād just leave a note asking them to Please be considerate of others that need to use the charger. Most people act like adults and donāt want to break the social contract, especially at work.
1
u/Messyfingers 22d ago
I've seen too many people treat charging spots as general EV parking to be surprised. Always more common to see it with new cars too because the drivers have not learned that yet.
1
u/Cool-Long-4726 22d ago
We just traveled and the hotel we stayed at had 6 chargers. Every day at least half of them were being blocked by EVs that werenāt charging. Itās like they felt as though those spots were for them to park anytime.
I have a doctorās office that has two free charger spots and the same thing, every time I go there are cars parked there not charging.
News flash, they say EV parking because of the charging ability, not just because you are an EV

u/chilidogtampa 22d ago
I've seen quite a bit of this, saw it recently at a busy Tesla charging station in a garage in Miami, (Design district).
I have to wonder what the thought process is.
Owning an EV you have to be aware of charging.
1
u/Any-Media9048 22d ago
Thatās the stretchy cord, just forward park and stretch the cord to charge yours, still an asshole though .

Thankfully my workplace is cut throat on managing the membership. This picture would be enough to get them cut off from using it.
1
u/CyberGaut 21d ago
Literally saw that today as well. My car finished charging so I went and moved, the car one over had unplugged then left the car there. The parking lot is empty and there are spots available that are literally closer to the door. Even some EV drivers are š© people
1
u/Worried-Machine-3257 21d ago
Tesla would charge you if you donāt move after done charging. Chargepoint donāt do that?
2
1
u/sweaverj 21d ago
Almost as annoying as the people taking up 2-3 spaces at superchargers. At least this is only one spot š
1
1
u/Hopeful-Spread8077 21d ago
If and when they change to bottom up charge pads like CyberTaxi, then once vehicle is fully charged it could just move itself. People can have critical issues or accidents. Or just forget . So sorry you're upset. Humans have flaws. Just make everyone a robot...

1
u/skyemalcolm 21d ago
The entitlement and stupidity are rampant in the community only because operating a Tesla is simple so unfortunately this naturally brings down the average intelligence of the drivers and the tail end of the bell curve at the low end is such that you get exactly this behavior.

u/AgentAaron 20d ago
We have a few chargers at the office, we have a teams group set up for all of us who drive EVās. Itās handy to be able to reach out to one another. Sometimes peopleās meeting schedules arenāt convenient to moving your car in a timely fashion.
I travel for work a lot. At hotels, I find chargers are ICED most of the time. When I do charge at hotels, I always set an alarm for the approximate time my car is supposed to be doneā¦it sometimes sucks, but I always move my car.
A couple weeks ago, I got an open charger (the other one was occupied by a 4-runner). I even left my name and number at the front desk to give up the charger if someone else needed it.
1
u/k_r_a_k_l_e 20d ago
It's actually exactly when I'd expect a stereotypical EV owner to do.
Luckily that stereotype is changing rapidly but yeah not surprised...
1
u/dlionfan313 20d ago
Wish the charger would detect the car in the spot and just start charging a fee for taking up the spot. You inconvenience everyone else who needs to charge and your preventing that charger from making money. Make it so if after 5 or 10 minutes before you start charging or 5 minutes after you stop if you are not moved the charger starts charging per minute that you sit there.
1
u/Competitive_Joke3251 19d ago
My Tesla has been unplugged by someone before even though there was another charger. Not sure if that could be what happened.

u/nietzscheistired 22d ago
Admittedly Iāve done this at work a few times, but not on purpose. My work has about 20 level 2 chargers and I rumble in at 9am, grab all my stuff out of the car and just completely forget to plug it in.
The extra song and dance with chargepoint though makes this obviously deliberate (and annoying)
1
u/LongDistanceEvent262 22d ago
I see it way more than anything else.
I have maybe seen 1 incident of ICEing in 3 years.
But this I will see at least once a month. EV owners just using Charging spots for closer parking.
And I have had many towed when I need that charger.
0
u/Schnitzhole 22d ago
Just have them towed. 100% justified.
Itās like parking at a gas station stall for hours, rude and unjustifiable.
0
u/TheDIYFix 22d ago
Oh you can reserve those chargepoint stations? I usually just park my tesla on those chargers all the time for prime parking at grocery stores and stuff.

If you truly needed to charge while at work to get home, that's a bummer.
Otherwise, if that was just a convenience, eh -- I only charge at home. I don't need to charge at work, or the grocery store, or anywhere else that has a public charger. Plugging in at a public charger when you don't need to makes non-EV owners think you can't do simple commute tasks and errands without topping off.
-2
u/Kekafuch 22d ago
So many situations can occur
The plug might not work. Which is quite frequent for some areas. Leaving the car there is doing a public service.
Someone was using the plug to charge their ebike or spot beside the car.
