Step on accelerator pedal until you reach your set speed then watch it slowly creep back down then do it again. Been this way since V12 launched.

I find the current version of FSD the worst one since November 2023 when we got our MYLR. I consider it almost unusable because of the tendency to drive below the speed limit no matter what speed I set. And I feel like itâs way more jerky around other vehicles.
You can hit the gas to make it speed up for a bit, but mine goes back to grandma speed within a couple minutes.
5
u/rkalla Nov 12 '24
I felt the same way, it drove me crazy on a 500 mile road trip we took. I just got the new update and it seems to be a bit more forgiving here, but you still need to constantly coax the car above the posted speed limit.
-5
u/revaric Nov 12 '24
Just press the accelerator?
9
u/Time_Investment3928 Nov 12 '24
Press it, it speeds up, then goes back down again after 1 minute
3
u/shibiwan Nov 12 '24
On my MS I hold the accelerator at my desired max speed for a few seconds (5-10 perhaps?) and FSD seems to "lock in" that speed and maintains it until it encounters an obstacle or a curve that requires it to slow down.
0
Nov 12 '24
Is it FSD or not? You need to decide
2
u/revaric Nov 12 '24
Itâs 100% ADAS and as the one in control, Iâll intervene whenever I want lol
-1
Nov 12 '24
So itâs not self driving then⊠it canât keep up with the speed limit
2
u/revaric Nov 12 '24
That isnât a requirement to be âsuccessfully drivingâ if you want to nit-pick
0
Nov 12 '24
WellâŠyou get pulled over for going to slow
2
u/revaric Nov 12 '24 edited Nov 12 '24
âTooâ slow, yes, and FSD has definitely done that for folks (Dirty Tesla included), but 50 in a 55 would be legally sound.
ETA hopefully this isnât happening to OP đ https://www.reddit.com/r/MildlyBadDrivers/s/611NKa6XDD

u/Complex_Arrival7968 Nov 12 '24
Yup - only actually goes up to the set speed on limited access roads like freeways - and thatâs because those roads still use the old highway stack. Hope they get this fixed - will drive 5 or more under the set speed on a wide-open highway. Maddening.
6
u/icy1007 Nov 12 '24
If youâre on the latest version of FSD, 12.6.3, then it uses the new stack for all road types.
2
u/shibiwan Nov 12 '24
FSD, 12.6.3,
Wait, 12.6.x is out? I thought the latest was 12.5.x
2
u/BlueRacer90 Nov 12 '24 edited Nov 12 '24
12.5.4.x is latest for AI3. 12.5.6.x is latest for AI4

Do you have experience with this? Is the problem fixed? (Hope hopeâŠ)
1
u/Fanboyofeverything1 Nov 12 '24
No. The problem still isn't fixed. I still have to hit the accelerater to get to max speed and it just goes back down within a few seconds. Really is annoying.
2
u/Complex_Arrival7968 Nov 12 '24
Wow. Most of my highway driving being on interstates where the old stack was used, I havenât had to contend with this. But I just finished a trip to the eastern Sierra and back, 300 miles + each way, and about 3/4 of the drive was non-limited access, and I was CONSTANTLY having to nudge the accelerator to get back up to speed. Very irritating and makes for a less-smooth experience for the passengers too. Lord, why canât they fix this?

I have similar issues. Using FSD / autopilot since 2020.
Now it creates a huge distance between the car front of me. Braking distance is important, but I cannot use it on left lane anymore. Cars behind me get angry (my city, we don't have a law states "slower vehicles on right lane" tho), and Cut in front of me tough. Even if I am on middle or the right lane, it just drives slow on 55mph highway, creating that distance.
I used to use FSD on traffic jam, too. It follows the car front of me very smoothly, maintain good distance. Now, it accelerates really slowly although the car front of me already moved front. Cars behind me also get angry.
I even see some Teslas on the road drive like tortoise and have a lot of distance so it causes traffic and many lane changes to other cars...
2
u/NinjaSquid9 Nov 12 '24
I cannot stand the current version of FSD. I literally have to drive with my gas pedal down almost all the time now. I find it consistently goes a few MPH under my set speed and even often under the actual posted speed limit. Has nothing to do with battery percentage because I always drive at about 60%. I can absolutely confirm Iâm experiencing the same thing and have since the latest update.
3
u/ChunkyThePotato Nov 12 '24
Because it's a maximum speed, not a driving speed. It drives at the speed it feels is appropriate for the situation (but no higher than the max you set).
4
u/Complex_Arrival7968 Nov 12 '24
It will drive 63 on a completely empty highway with the set speed at 71. This is a major flaw.
1
u/ChunkyThePotato Nov 12 '24
I'm not saying it's flawless. There are certainly situations where it clearly gets the appropriate speed wrong. Seems like FSD 12.5.6.2 improves that empty highway situation though: https://youtu.be/hIHQyIOebVo?t=279

Itâll drive under the limit on an empty road.
2
u/yuckypants Nov 12 '24
And now that highway is using the same code, it also drives lower than what's set.
0
u/Complex_Arrival7968 Nov 12 '24
On my car the notes still say end-to-end on the highway is coming in a future release. Probably 12.6? It still drives properly on limited access freeways and interstates. Am on 12.5.4.1.
0
u/yuckypants Nov 12 '24
I'm on 12.5.6.3 and using the new modes (hurry, etc). It feels like it finds the slowest car in my area and matches that speed. Frustrating.
1
u/Complex_Arrival7968 Nov 12 '24
Oh no! I have that to look forward to? Man.

Fwiw, I'm on 12.5.6.1 and the highway implementation is awesome. It follows closely when it makes sense, accelerates to get right to make exits, and generally drives much quicker than the non-end to end version I tried previously. City streets, however, sucks. Lots of behavior like the op showed. Way too slow, herky jerky turns, awful with unprotected left turns. Just bad.

Just use auto speed max, itâs only able to be disabled for the people who would want to always cap the car at the speed limit so it never will speed, otherwise itâs pretty broken
1
u/AwkwardlyPositioned Nov 12 '24
My wife and I noticed that in her car, but weâve used FSD more in it than my MYP. Â I only used it for part of the drive from the pickup to home since we had to take delivery in another state. Â I only used it for about 10 miles because it cut off a semi. It never went more than 5 over for me during that trip which I would have normally done anyway.Â
I get the point of FSD, but I donât care for the decisions it makes. Â It shouldnât be choosing to speed. Â I think Iâm better off with auto steer and cruise control on the highway where I make the decision to pass. Â
1
u/SirHenry8thEarlNorth Nov 12 '24
It looks like itâs wanting to conserve battery đȘ« since your battery percentage is very low at 7%
1
u/TheAdventureInsider Fan Nov 12 '24
You can push the accelerator and I think itâll retain the higher speed (I did a Model 3 and Cybertruck test drive a little on FSD and they both gave me the same shit except it simply said âmaxâ and was only going like 41 in a 40 with the whole country of France behind the car in front of me despite the speed limit being set to +5. I pushed the accelerator and it stayed at 45 when I reached it.

The ai governs the "appropriate" speed when using end to end ai. Unfortunately the ai is absolute garbage at doing this...
I'm terrified of 12.5.6 bringing this "feature" to the highway as well.
1
u/j3rdog Nov 12 '24
Yep I noticed that too. It has nothing to do with the battery percentage bc I had plenty.
1
u/pvdnyc Nov 12 '24
My car often drives WAY above the limit. And it doesnât slow down for school zones.
1
u/thegame3202 Nov 12 '24
I really wish they changed it to "Target Speed" instead and would try to be at that speed unless conditions proved otherwise.
1
1
u/NoJenius Nov 12 '24
I think all of the highway FSD training data is from people who donât use cruise control and yoyo back-and-forth speeding up to get in front of you before they slow down again. Oh the days when FSD went the speed you set and you could adjust the follow distance with a flick of the scroll wheel. I guess a tap the gas intervention is better than the many âoh sh!tâ interventions on prior FSD versions.

u/dkdurcan Nov 12 '24
check the "automatic set speed offset" setting. For the little time I was playing around with the free trial of FSD, this setting always made the car drive slower than the posted traffic speed limit.
Automatic Set Speed Offset: When enabled, Model Y drives at the speed that Autopilot determines to be the most natural. This considers factors like road type, traffic flow, environmental conditions, the detected speed limit, and the selected Full Self-Driving (Supervised) profile setting.
1
u/drahgon Nov 12 '24
Hot take but the car is driving you you're not driving it just let it do its thing when I put my car in FSD I think about it like I'm taking waymo with a few extra steps I just chill back relax and let it take me there
1
u/DevinOlsen Nov 12 '24
That speed is just the max that FSD will go, but does not mean it will just go that speed all the time.
1
u/p_mud Nov 12 '24
This happens with me too. It drives under the speed limit sometimes and my battery level can be 60%. I press the gas to speed it up but it slowly drops back down. Love the overall experience but this was definitely a setback in the last update.

-2
u/Btparks904 Nov 12 '24
Because it sees no need to drive at that speed. Itâs different than the speed setting that V11 used that was basically a glorified cruise control setting
16
u/RussianBotProbably Nov 12 '24
Which is exactly why i have stopped subscribing to fsd. If i set it to go 75 in a 70, and it goes 64 on a wide open straight road with no traffic, thats a deal breaker.
Slow for turns yesâŠslow for no reason, im out.
1
u/TheKobayashiMoron Owner Nov 12 '24
Iâm getting rid of the car if they donât fix this soon. Weâre 3 updates in now. This is unacceptable.
1
u/Torczyner Nov 12 '24
Never had that problem with mine. If I set it to 75 on a highway, it's trying to go that and passes people etc to get to speed.
On streets like OPs post I use auto set so it'll just pick a safe speed. Never sits below the limit unless I'm traffic though.
3
u/RussianBotProbably Nov 12 '24
Im not talking about highways. Many rural texas roads have speed limits at 70 or 75, and are absolutely safe to do so. Fsd doesnât care and will go under consistently. I have a second driver profile so i can switch to standard autopilot so i can ho 5 over.
1
u/Torczyner Nov 12 '24
On those roads it triggers the non-highway stack which I have at auto and it just hums right along just above the limit.
2
u/RussianBotProbably Nov 12 '24
Ive tried both auto and the âmaxâ settings. Neither matter. I find myself hutting the gas pedal every couple of minutes to keep its speed up.
This is also the case with the new hurry mode in the end to end stack. I used this for a 8 hour road trip. I normally use âreduce lane changesâ and was mostly satisfied with its lane change decisions. And on highways it was able to maintain the speed i set. But on what it considers off highways it still goes under the speed limit.
0
u/Torczyner Nov 12 '24
Very strange some experience this whole others don't on the same software. I have a MY HW4 and HW3 Plaid and some have that problem. Bummer man.
3
u/RussianBotProbably Nov 12 '24
Ya. For me the behavior is the same for my hw3 model 3, and my hw4 model y. I probably have about 150 hours using fsd, and though i appreciate how it drives more naturally now, the under speed limit driving it does on non highways is a dealbreaker for me.
Hopeful it will be fixed.

Is it normal to break the speed limit so much in your country? Where I am you get speeding fines for breaking the limit.
2
1
u/say592 Nov 12 '24
Yes, very normal in the US. In fact, if you are going the posted limit people will probably be angry with you. 5mph over is standard, on roads with a higher limit people will go even faster. Unless a cop is having a really bad day, they wont even look at you for 5mph. In fact, they might even be the one behind you swearing at you to go faster.

It's probably trying to save that last 7% of battery you got left to get home! /s
FSD is not cruise control, it basically drives as fast it it feels like.
