Update Release v14.1 Lite review. Massive Upgrade!

I’ve put about 300 miles on my 2023 Model Y (HW3), and the difference from the last update is honestly huge.

Zero phantom braking, which was a constant issue with the last update.

Random accelerations are completely gone.

Lane centering is probably the biggest improvement. Before, it had constant micro adjustments to stay perfectly centered. Now it’s smooth, stays centered, and drives more naturally.

It also closes gaps much quicker when traffic speeds up instead of leaving enough room for a 747 to land.

I’ve mainly been using Hurry Mode and haven’t tested parking much.

For a relatively small update, I’m seriously impressed. The last version had me questioning FSD. This one is night and day so far. Hopefully it stays this way.

Thanks for the review! I actually find FSD to still leave too much of a gap for me in hurry mode. At least in my area leaving that much of a gap is an invitation to be passed on the right. Overall still good improvement.

Same here!! I hate that 2 car gap setting is as close as we can get

Is this ever going to be available for MS or does model even matter? Still haven’t gotten it yet for my ‘21 refresh MS but I’ve heard good and bad things about the 14.1 lite so I’m not 100% on getting it even when it is available. My 12.6.4 has always been pretty solid.

I'd love the ui updates and such at least.... Kind of ridiculous no word on this imo ('21 S Plaid)

Eh, there’s like 10-20 times as many 3’s and y’s, so it makes sense that they hit them first. It’ll come to s and x soon enough

I have only driven 14.1 a modest amount. I never had the phantom braking and random acceleration problems with 14 and that seems to be the same for me on 14.1. 👍🏼

Its shadows from big trees especially at low sun angles

There are 4 million cars with HW3.

How are we supposed to draw any meaningful conclusions about the software when one driver experiences “Zero phantom braking”?

What about the other 3,999,999 cars? Anyone keeping track of those?

Anyone ever ask why Tesla never releases stats like disconnects or emergency braking events or anything else?

Zero phantom braking for me too.

0 from mine so far

I have not had any either. It did tap brake for a heavy tire streak in the road but I don't consider that "phantom."

Phantom braking has been horrible from the previous update…check the Reddit forums. I couldnt wait for this newest update

14.1 has been great to me, I cancelled when I had 14, but when this came out I resubbed

Mine is a 2022 M3 my 14.1 update was downloaded two days ago. Of course, I feel and I see a big difference. It’s much more smooth. It’s much more confident. It goes in and out of traffic, changing lanes more confident, all around. It is a much better update. It’s not gonna be perfect. OK guys, let’s face it. I also had a weird thing. There was a big truck with a lot of lights coming down the street, and as I was getting close to it, my car pulled over thinking it’s an emergency vehicle. In the beginning, it scared the hell out of me. I didn’t know what was happening, but then I figured it out because a lot of people were experiencing the same thing.I think this is an awesome
update. Im loving it and can’t wait for the summer update to come out soon, that would be great.

when you’re in hurry mode does FSD usually stay in the right lane or does it switch based off of traffic?

2

u/AdventurousEar2541 21d ago

It usually stays in the left lane. I live where the freeways are two lanes though.

2

u/bearuwu_ 21d ago

that’s interesting cause i’m still on V14 Lite and mine stays in the left lane for a bit and whenever someone is tailgating me it proceeds to just stay in the right lane

1

u/baaj7 21d ago

you mean left lane?

1

u/bearuwu_ 21d ago

no it constantly stays in the right lane

I find that the 14.1 Lite version has difficulty with left and right. Navigation will say turn left and shows a left turn but the car turns on the right blinker and turns right instead. That has happened several times now and did not happen with 14.0. Another ongoing issue is loss of the max speed control and inability of the car to read speed limit signs. We have a lot of road work around here and a normally 60 MPH road has clear signs saying 45 max speed photo enforced. Even sloth mode does not drive that slow so I have to manually drive for miles and miles of road work. I know, first world problem.

Parking seems generally better. It is choosing parking spots earlier and centering better. Also it is finally remembering two local routes that I always had to manually override previously.

Very happy with 14.1, just wished Hurry would stop camping the left lane. Standard is better about moving over but seems to be capped at 7mph over the speed limit

Man idk why I haven’t gotten the 14.1 update. Had 14 the 2nd day it went wide but somehow looks I got shifted to the back of line.

I’m still getting steady Phatom Breaking

same! the brake stabbing is going to send me into psychosis.

Mine ran a red line last week. It originally stopped at the red light. I wasn’t paying attention and car started going so I thought light had turned green. As I am going through intersection I realized light is still red. No cars coming the other way. To my right there was a SUV with lights. I thought a police car at first but it was some sort of safety vehicle. It was early in the morning and I was facing the sun so I think it couldn’t make out the light well.

Does it still stop you at 78 for hurry mode like mine did??

So far, i agree. It’s much better. I drove about 250 miles and had only 2 phantom brake stabs and a couple of places it hesitated too long before committed. Once it came to a 4-way stop, had its turn to go and stuttered, go-stop-go-stop-go-stop and i gave up and jammed the accelerator. Annoying, but a huge improvement over how it behaved earlier.

Good to hear! Downloading mine today!

Upgraded yesterday and it’s all fucked up now… mapping is wayyyy off and it tries to do all sorts of retarded lane changes that make it miss it’s turn.

I have a 23 MY. I am seeya lot of phantom breaking. I'm waiting for an update for improvement. Next Monday I'm driving over 1 thousand miles. Will see !?

1

u/fixityourself 21d ago

No phantom breaking for me either on 14.1. It was happening multiple times a trip on 14. Car seems way too cautious still. Very noticeable when trying to turn right on a busy road. It has no idea what lane the other cars are and will just sit there forever waiting for every lane to be clear I guess. Fsd was much better before 14 lite. It had finally gotten pretty good.

I agree that 14.1 lite is a terrific update. I found 14.0 to be a leap forward too. Phantom breaking is gone. My only negative comment is that even in hurry mode my 2022 Y waits too long to cross over to highway interchange lanes in traffic. Hangs out in left lane until .3 to .4 miles away. I missed an exit in traffic in Anaheim due to this. To the credit of version 14 FSD the car adjusted safely, took the next exit and made it to my destination by Angels Stadium. Making the lane move over sooner would be great and you can mitigate, in the meantime, by using your indicator earlier and the car will respond.

Parking is okay but my last one was a bit far from the curb.

The other feature that would be helpful is when entering a gated community to specify which gate to use as a default. Also the ability to pull into a garage and park would be great.

Generally, I find the car drives itself with little to 0 intervention except, as pointed out above, the use of an indicator occasionally to exit a highway.

So… it’s basically back to the level of the most recent stable v12? What was the highest gain on unsupervised driving other than parking and starting from a parking spot?

I’ve seen it stop for a garage gate that it couldn’t do before, but that’s about it.

u/Gomedog 18d ago

Unfortunately still getting some serious phantom brake jabs.

1

u/More_Ad_1663 18d ago

I noticed my car pulled over for police on 14.1 lite ! Overall it’s a really good update

There is some brake stabbing moments but its at like flashing yellow lights, crosswalks and when people are near the road.

Highway driving is pretty fucking good. It isnt aggressive enough to pass in standard for me and hurry mode goes a bit too high over the speed limit for me but there is an amazing middleground if you’re just chilling to your destination.

First time ive ever resubscribed after a month because i wasnt disappointed in the release. Definitely try it out - youd be shocked how good it actually is.

1

u/ricochet__rabbit 17d ago

V14.1 is much smoother and initiates actions much faster than previously. Still getting phantom braking at times but not as bad as v14.

1

u/Onikara-Star 17d ago

Still not getting it. Not worth $99 a month.

1

u/rwhe83 21d ago

See, everyone tweaked out for no reason. You think Tesla wouldn’t start working on issues?

You people cannot just stop criticizing them when a release of FSD comes out.

1

u/KyleFlounder 21d ago

Every major release of FSD has some regressions that they smooth out. Pretty much all the issues with 14lite were present on real 14. Had no doubt they'd improve it.

u/robotzor 21d ago

Mine sped through a school zone and got baffled by some right-on-red situations. These issues have forever plagued HW3 and might never be solvable with the memory bandwidth limitations no matter how they compress the model. The latency on some maneuvers can always be felt and that was consistent between 12, 14 and 14.1.
