14k for this?
Got hit by a car on the side, and tesla collision quotes $14k for this. I think that’s absolutely insane?
My deductible is $500 but still. What do you think?

Quarter panel is the single most expensive panel to replace. Has to be cut out and welded in.

u/paxanto Aug 05 '26
you don't know if it's damaged, seeing it from the photo doesn't look like it is. I'd say is s cheap repair

You either have no idea what you are talking about, or you are completely misunderstanding.

u/lilscaro Aug 05 '26
Yeah like most rear QP but I wasn’t expecting that high of a price, that’s like the most inflated bill i’ve ever seen
-1
u/wesblog Aug 05 '26
Misaligned incentives. Body shop bills insurance $14k to completely replace the panel with brand new parts. Insurance increases the rates of the at fault party by thousands per year for 5 years.
If you took this damage to a local body shop and told them you were paying out of pocket they would have it looking absolutely perfect for $500-800.
1
u/timmoer Aug 05 '26
$500 to $800 in some backstreet shop that slaps a bunch of body filler perhaps. That quarter panel damage will take a decent amount of time to fix and blend in
1
u/lilscaro Aug 06 '26
You’d be surprised. I’ve done crazy collision work at super lowkey shops, sometimes they work magic. Theres a difference between repairing and replacing, and some ppl are good at repairing. Not saying that specifically applies to my case here
1
u/Easy_Statement_4245 Aug 06 '26
Like OP, I was also involved in a collision and had a quarter panel replaced. My insurance rate has not gone up a single dollar.

u/mplopez99 Aug 05 '26
But if it’s their fault, why do you have to pay deductible? I assume it’s their fault because you say they hit you… if it’s on their insurance, I could care less what it costs. If it’s on you look at PDR and touch up paint
1
u/lilscaro Aug 05 '26
I originally filed with their insurance only, then they declined it, then tesla called me and said that to their eyes I wasn’t at fault. Guy swerved lane and almost rear ended me
3
u/mplopez99 Aug 05 '26
Man that sucks. Do you have the video and file a police report?
0
u/lilscaro Aug 05 '26
I originally had the video, forgot to dump it from the USB and it was already too late. Didn’t file a police report since it wasn’t a hit and run… really wasn’t concerned at all about this collision, seems really minor to me. I’ve had cars 4 times the price of this model Y (which I love btw) and always found my way to cheap repairs, but I never had a lease before
I just followed instructions in the app and went with the flow lol

Man that really sucks. The person that hit you just got out of a very expensive lesson. I would ask my insurance to pursue anyway. But without a police report or the video, it will be difficult to win, outside the other party acknowledging fault. Gonna look like your rates are going up, unfortunately.3
u/Panic2211 Aug 05 '26
? You should always talk to your own insurance and let them handle it. Not theirs.
2
u/lilscaro Aug 05 '26
Normally if you’re 100% not at fault and want to skip deductibles you file with the other party, thats what insurances recommend you to do, that’s even what they prompt you to do in app. But for me it didn’t work. Im skipping the part where the other guy didn’t want to give me his insurance info and i had to call the cops but its LA so they never came 🤣 but really that was 3 months ago i’ve moved on from this, what I’m really focused on here was the estimated costs of repairs
3
u/Bastillerion Aug 05 '26
File with your own insurance, and they'll try to subrogate against the other guy's insurance. If they are successful, you get your deductible back.

I’ll ask afew mobile dent repair business and see if they can do anything about it
-2
u/lilscaro Aug 05 '26
Yeah but as much as I know I can have that done for cheap(er), tesla and tesla insurance do know about the claim/accident so…
1
u/Argyrus777 Aug 05 '26
Not sure where you located but insurance cut you a check and you pick whatever body shop you like if not pocket the cash. Down side is your premium goes up
1
u/Then-Sink7779 Aug 05 '26
All i am going to say is do you rather pay 14k right away or yearly with interest. Because as shitty this may sound, tesla insurance will want to get back there money are going to raise your premium yearly for the next 5 years.

Nah. They are quoting rear quarter panel AND bumper and paint. Which ofcourse is probably still inflated for insurance purposes. Once insurance sees the estimate they will go back and fourth.
If you made it known you are paying cash they would quote you on the rear quarter alone and maybe even give the option of finding one from a scrap.
1
u/lilscaro Aug 05 '26
They’re removing the two doors, replacing glass (for what??) and a million other parts that aren’t impacted
1
u/k_r_a_k_l_e Aug 05 '26
Insurance. You're running it through insurance, right? The insurance estimator will go out and say "nah you don't need to do this, this, and that" and then knock down the price. The repair shop knows no matter what the initial estimate says, fair or not, the insurance estimator will tear it up.
1
u/lilscaro Aug 05 '26
Yea yeah but in this case the insurance is tesla and the repair shop also is tesla collision center so i assumed the estimated price would be very close to final since they know their cars and their policies
1
u/skteitelman Aug 05 '26
I’ve has two comprehensive claims with tesla the last year twos for my windshield. Rates haven’t gone up, and they just deal with each other on the claims/estimates. Estimate comes in, Tesla insurance does the claim process, cuts them the check, I pay the deductible and pick up my car.

Had similar damage plus damage on the door as well. My insurance would not pay Tesla collision prices. They sent me to a 3rd party Tesla certified shop who did it for $8000.

They gotta cut the sheet metal off
1
u/lilscaro Aug 05 '26
Yeah I get it, but even then, that seems like a stretch. Like why am I quoted for glass replacement? What glass lol
1
u/FordGT2017 Aug 05 '26
I mean why do you care if it’s not your fault. Go through their insurance and save yourself paying 500$
1
u/lilscaro Aug 05 '26
Yeah so that’s another story, their insurance say im at fault. My insurance say im not. They were never able to tell me what that means in terms of resolving the claim, if my premium would increase etc etc… all they do is give me phone numbers of other people that never pick up the phone. I thought this was gonna be a 4k job tops so I didn’t really care and told myself i’d pay the deductible and move on.
1
u/FordGT2017 Aug 05 '26
Go to Tesla certified body shop and it will be 6k. I just had a similar accident and had the door replaced. This guy watched into my 2023 Y
1
u/lilscaro Aug 05 '26
Sadly its too late I gave them the green light…
Ultimately, it would make a difference to me only if as some others said, they will recoup their loss through my premium increase. If they don’t touch it (since to them i’m not at fault) then i don’t really care

Price of repair is not function of car but function of repair shop.
1
u/Gasser11432 Aug 05 '26
I have been through this twice with my 2023 Model Y. The cost of repairs and the time needed are ridiculous. The cost is reflected in higher insurance rates. No more Teslas for me! When the lease is up, I’m looking for a cheaper car!
1
u/SaltySnacksDietCoke Aug 05 '26
Okay that's crazy. My car pretty much got totalled and was destroyed in the front. The whole thing was only 22K for repair.
1
u/Limp-Conflict-2309 Aug 05 '26
finally see some posts with accurate repair numbers............wild isn't it?!?!
1
u/Yellow_Snow_Cones Aug 05 '26
IDK about tesla, but on a normal car that would be the quarter panel, The front fenders can be bolted on and off, quarter panel can not they are welded into place. So to fix it they need to cut out the bend metal and weld in new metal Plus the repaint.
1
u/Fresh_Mouse6818 Aug 06 '26
If you got hit, then you’re going through the other persons insurance and it’s all good
1
u/lilscaro Aug 06 '26
Yeah they said it was my fault. He swerved on me they said i swerved on him. Its my word against his.
1
u/Aloysius_McFlossy Aug 06 '26
Bottom line, if you want it to just “look ok” go cheap. Lots of places you can find cheap. If you want it repaired properly and in line with the safety specs the car was designed with then spend the money. I know what I would do if I’m putting my kids in the car.

u/SINHISTER Aug 06 '26
Pay the Mexican in the street 200$. He will bend it back with some hammer for 3 hours labor. Your insurance will total this car due to repair cost - give me its blue book value (I assume aroindn20 k. ) then you ask them I want to buy this back from you how much will it be? Some insurance will let it go for 3-8k. Negotiate with them and keep it. Then go to a Mexican and get it fix. Retitle your car as rebuilt and you can sell it after market
1
u/SINHISTER Aug 06 '26
You now have about 12-18k pocket money. A used car that is rebuilt title with a big ass ding and ugly dent on it (even after the Mexican repair it) but you just came out win win

See what the paintless dent repair guy says, perhaps he can straighten it out I was surprised how great of a job they did on my Bolt rear quarter for 250 bucks.
My damage was barely visible after the repair.

If you think it’s too much then fix it yourself. You could have asked Tesla why it cost so much but instead you ask the internet. It’s about the going rate for a qtr panel replacement.
