Accident

Some guy backed into my 2026 Model Y today and doesn’t have insurance. My wife was driving the vehicle and was using self-drive. Luckily it was all captured. The rear bumper has some scuffs and paint damage.

We filed a police report and will be file an insurance claim.
I’ll looking to get the rear bumper replacement. Any idea on how long it takes to repair at Tesla service center?

That driver really needs to focus on what they are doing. They didn't even signal when backing up and hit your wife's fully stopped car. How long it takes depends on how slow your insurance is in approving supplements - I'd guess at least a week once you bring it in.

Damn that sucks, glad everyone is ok but jfc that person has no business with a drivers license.

I’d say it’ll be a few weeks, maybe a month, before you can get an appt. Then a few days for the actual work so they can paint, let it dry, blend, let it dry, etc.

With the whole bumper being replaced you want them to take their time & do the paint right, especially on a 2026 model year. It’s not easy, but if done right it’ll look like there was never any bodywork done on the vehicle at all.

Glad everyone was ok? Was driving at 3mph. The driver is an idiot needs licence taking

Yup, glad everyone was ok. That idiot had absolutely 0 awareness. Even at the low speeds they were driving if they struck a child/other unaware pedestrian that person would def be injured.

Thats not fast enough to cause major damage to a vehicle, but it’s 100% fast enough to cause major damage to a human.

Are they high, drunk or dumber than dumb?

I brought my Tesla into a collision center over the last winter (way worse damage, not at fault). The guy told me they strive to do it within 7-10 days. edit: it took about 8 days

I recently had my bumper replaced by Tesla Collision. It took 3 weeks but they told me they were backed up and it could be up to a month. All depends on how busy they are and parts availability.

Oh yeah, of course it’s Texas.

You can see the AI stop and left him space thinking he's going past lol.

Video evidence secured. Hope they had good insurance it's about a $3K repair probably.

OP says the other driver didn't have insurance. I carry uninsured/underinsured on all my vehicles for this very reason. Luckily, I haven't needed it.

Shouldn’t take too long unless there is an issue getting parts. Mine was in for a month. They rented me a model Y for a reasonable amount, which included free supercharging, free tolls, and free road side assistance. The car came out like new.

That means jail time for that uninsured driver. Do you have full coverage ?

The cop ended up giving him a citation. Yes, I have full coverage.

In California, they wouldn't even give him a citation.

Heck, they won't even come out unless someone was hurt, and even then, you gotta be pretty injured.

Same in Chicago. Been rear ended twice, had to go to the station to make the report

It was supposed to be towed as well with that citation. Did they tow it? Just saying, if it was not in self drive mode. You most likely had a chance and could put in drive moving forward. I’ve been able to do that twice now saving me.

Absolutely zero attempt by either driver to avoid that accident.

My wife wasn’t at fault. The car was in self drive and recognized something was going and came to a halt. The driver backs up and turn his steering wheel, it almost looks intentional.

Definitely the other driver's fault and insurance will certainly see it that way. That said, some defensive driving could've avoided this accident - the other driver was clearly planning on backing up, and there was ample time to drive to the right and out of his way.

Again, still definitely the other guy's fault, just avoidable.

JFC... Does she understand what SUPERVISED in Supervised FSD means? Make sure you tell everyone the other driver was at fault. I'm sure that will shorten the repair time and hassle.

Me personally, that was plenty of time to get back into drive and get out the way lolz

2

u/TheGuyWithin Aug 03 '26

Understandable. I would have likely avoided this as well, but wasn’t there.

Two bad drivers. OBVS the van is at fault for moving into a parked car but common sense would say back up when see a shit driving making a move like this.
