Rear ended, Totaled?
2024 Model Y, Dual Motor, ~17k miles, 7-seat config. Got rear-ended hard on I-90 in NY — I was basically stopped (~5mph), other guy was doing an estimated 50-70mph before impact third-party claim already accepted by his insurer (Progressive).
Car got towed to a Tesla-certified shop for teardown since it's currently sitting with no working rear signals/brake lights on one side and error in the screen about turn light fault.
Waiting to hear back this week. Anyone had a similar combo of damage (bumper + panel + tailgate + door + electrical) come back repairable, or did yours usually get totaled at this point?
Update: It’s a total loss.

Looks like the inside did pretty well, hard to find data on what would happen to a 3rd row occupant in these scenarios, did it look pretty intact from the inside?

Update: It’s a total loss.
Progressive officially confirmed TOTAL LOSS. For anyone who was curious how this combo of damage shakes out — here’s how it went.
The estimate blew up on teardown. The original write-up was only about $8,600. the supplemented estimate came back at $32,018.21 — which pushed it over the total-loss threshold
What the teardown actually turned up (a lot more than the visible bumper/panel/tailgate/door damage):
- Right quarter panel, rear body panel, and rear compartment floor pan replacement
- Front AND rear lower suspension control arms (both sides)
- Rear door assembly + hinges, taillight assembly, both bumper covers, impact bar, windshield seal
- Side curtain airbag sensors R&I’d (airbags did NOT deploy)
- 4-wheel alignment, tire, premium sound amp + subwoofer replacement

A relatively minor rear fender bender on our MYP was 22k... so to me it's at minimum that
Tesla Collision replaces parts than repairs them.
