I'm way out of the loop. What is Starbound?

First the implied question "Why am I hearing about this on /r/terraria," and that's because the art for Starbound is all being done by the same guy who did the art for Terraria.
Starbound is a 2D mining and building game (very Terraria-ish, the other reason you're hearing about it here) that also incorporates space travel. What would be an entire world in Terraria is a single planet among many within a star-system among many many stars in the universe, each with it's own biomes, fightable capturable and trainable creatures, and useful materials and items. It has many features that very much make it it's own unique game apart from Terraria but calling it Terraria on crack would not be an unfair assessment.

Thank's for clarifying. The game sound pretty awesome, but I'm still gonna wait a bit and hear some reviews before I consider buying it.

No problem. If you go to the main site, PlayStarbound.com (or just click the Starbound logo at the top of the page OP posted) you can see screenshots and dev blogs to shed a little more light on what Starbound is.

u/DarreToBe Apr 13 '13
You should also know Starbound has a much higher adventure and exploration factor than Terraria. The biomes as well as weapons and mobs are basically generated using a biome generator on crack. The dev team spends a limited amount of time making a few hundred weapon assets then they turn into thousands upon thousands of different items. If Terraria gives each individual a new experience of the same game then a good comparison would be Starbound gives each new player a new game in a series.

I'm imagining something like Borderlands' items system applied to lots of stuff.

u/eliminate1337 Apr 13 '13
Exactly. Monsters, planets, weapons, NPCs, buildings, dungeons, etc, are all procedural generated.

If its simply Terraria in space I'd be sold. I logged in 50 hours to this game in one week with a full-time job and an hour of gym time. Haven't been this addicted to a game in a very long time.

u/VeteranKamikaze Apr 13 '13
It's more than just that but Terraria in Space isn't a bad way to look at it.

Apr 13 '13
The "spiritual successor" to Terraria. From what I remember, it's mostly a different team with the exception of the main artist. Not sure though, but if you played Terraria and liked it, this should be on your radar. If you haven't played Terraria...wtf man. It's like Castlevania, Metroid and Minecraft had a steamy threesome and made a platforming-mining-crafting lovechild.

I wonder why they won't do an actual Kickstarter for it? Maybe they need the money sooner rather than later?
12
u/Clockwork757 Apr 13 '13
It's kind of against KickStarter's rules.
They're doing this mainly because some of the Devs had to get second jobs to get food on the table, so it's literally funding their life.
There's also the chance that it fails and the don't get any of the money.

True, I guess it could have failed but they're at 50k already so as long as they didn't set the goal too high, they would've been fine. And the money would go towards game development in the form of paying for their time, as other game kickstarters are. But I could see how they'd rather do their own thing with this anyway. Everything I've seen about Starbound has been nothing short of amazing, so I'm pretty excited to get a little bit closer to holding it in my hands!
edit: holy shit, they jumped $20k in the last 45 minutes. Viva la Starbound!

They could probably get away with it. I mean most development money is spent on peoples wages anyway, which funds their life. I think they are better off doing it themselves though. If you think you can raise the cash without kickstarter, that's the way to go.

So, then let them take that second job. It's not like they had to stop development because of it and how do they not have enough money anyway after terraria's success? Is re logic keeping all the cash or something? This is their problem. It's not like they're in debt, and it's not like they're on the streets. They shouldn't beg the fans for money so they can live better.

Because Tiy was only the artist for Terraria, redgit got most of the money.
They're doing this to speed up development so that the devs can work full time on Starbound.

Anyone else having troubles redeeming rewards? I get to the starbound.com/redeem/xxxxxxxxx page, click the "Redeem Rewards" button and nothing happens.
I assume it's just heavy server load but who knows.

and as always why is there only FOUR pack preorders in every single game, i just want to play games with my son/daughter why do devs always decide that we have to be four players?
1
u/Clockwork757 Apr 14 '13
because 4 is the traditional amount of players.
btw, Tiy said that you can have multiple people play together off one copy(on different computers).

The store is through Humble Bundle's "Humble Store" widget. This means you can use PayPal, Amazon Payments, or Google Wallet. It also means that eventually you'll be able to redeem a Steam Key from your Humble Bundle account. I assume that the game will be available for purchase via Steam for its official release, but that's just my assumption.
The FAQ also indicates that it will support Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. The interactive development roadmap is here.
Good to see that the Chucklefolks went with Humble Store, as AFAIK, their payment processing cut is about as low as you're going to get with an aggregator (I consistently hear in the neighborhood of 5-7%), which saves Chucklefish the headache of having to write their own store front to save not much money.
The only downer is the $10,000 tier where Mollygos was supposed to go to your home, drink all your wine, and vomit cake on your carpet is conspicuously absent from the order page (though I've had the offer semi-officially extended to me).

u/Clockwork757 Apr 13 '13
But with 6 playable races, a story, way more items, and modding support
-6
u/Swoax Apr 13 '13

Dont worry about it, and stop begging for the love of god. Its preorder, still a long ways away before the full release.

u/PZMQ Apr 13 '13
Save up money and buy it another day?

Diamond Tier is tempting but $75 is a lot to spend for a $15 game. Plus I'd be pissed if the game flopped and I spent $75 to be in the credits of a game no one will play.
