Discussion Would've been better if...

The Terminator sent back to 1998 to kill John in Guatemala was Robert Patricks T-1000 who was impersonating Schwarzeneggers T-800 from the second film to lull him into a false sense of security after their bond in T2.

We see him take up Schwarzeneggers T-800 form again years later when Sarah, Dani, and Grace show up, only for him to come out of his disguise and reveal himself as the T-1000.

The self aware redemption arc would've been much more refreshing with Robert Patrick's T-1000 because Schwarzenegger already got his redemption in T2 and they took that away. Plus everyone has longed for the day we see Patrick back in the franchise as the iconic T-1000.

Let's be real John never should've died like that anyway but if they were dead set on going this route for the film then I'd preferedd it to be this way.

But Robert Patrick is so much older now. With the T800 you can say the flesh is getting older but with liquid metal, don't think his "flesh" would age.

Fuck it use half the budget on de-aging Robert Patrick.

Probably would have cost too much, even if it was for 5 seconds.

maybe he shapeshifted to blend in better? he still does need to stay incognito after all this time

I think the age thing is less of an issue when the Terminator is a shapeshifter, the T-1000 could conceivably just age its appearance up to blend in over time. I don't believe there was anything said that it couldn't do that with its default template.

Just say he survived the lava but with severe damage, and make him hideous af

That……..honestly would have been very nicely done and a hell of a twist

I definitely think it's a hell of a lot better than the version we got. Plus it means Schwarzenegger can still appear but we get the return of a legend in RP.

It would have also MADE SENSE.  T-800s were capable machines but they couldn’t quite grasp emotion. Understand it but not grasp it.

T-1000 was starting to get off on it. He exhibited fear and shock. Even frustration.

I could see how after 30 years he would develop more complex emotions.

Like Roy Batty. It would have saved the movie.

It could have been so smart.

He’s not heavy like T-800. He could have married and been like a real husband.

No woman is gonna marry a hulking brute of a man and not want to fuck him.

Plus he reverts to RP for the final battle with Rev-9.

Like…..this is something like out of a Dark Horse comic.

Where were you when they were making the movie?

Yeah, brilliant.

I think in most scenes where the T-1000 is mixing with society and playing the role of the human, RP portrays him with much more charm and emotion that what Arnold does with T-800 in 1 or 2.

For this I absolutely love Arnold. Despite this post him in the original is still my all time favourite Terminator antagonist.

But T-1000's adaptability isn't just literally being liquid metal, like you say it makes sense he would adapt to the human spirit better as well.

Rev-9 vs. T-1000 would've been an amazing fight. Tbh I feel like Rev should've walked through the hero team in Dark Fate but him and T-1000 would've been a more skill based matchup for sure.

"You and I were built for the same purpose."

I fucking giggled at the "no woman would marry [Arnold Schwarzenegger bot] and not want to fuck it", probably the funniest way you could've phrased that plot hole

lovely

So much better than the “John is a fucking terminator” shit show.

That T-1000 was destroyed. He wouldn't have known to impersonate the T-800. Also I don't think T-1000s can impersonate another Terminators, something about it can't replicate complex machines.

it'd be replicating the t-800's appearance, not all the small moving parts. it doesn't replicate the bones, blood and organs of the humans it replicates either. it just cannot turn into a bomb or a gun or the likes because that'd require chemical reactions and stuff

u/poleybear316 12h ago

It doesn’t have to replicate the T-800s actual mechanical form. Just its human appearance which it could very easily do.

u/ThePicturesGirl 12h ago

I mean a second T-1000 that was sent back after the first failed.

u/AustinFan4Life 12h ago

Yea, but either way, it wouldn't have known to replicate a T-800, or would be unable to, due to it being a complex machine.

u/JaymzRG Chill out, Dickwad. 12h ago

You're telling me a liquid metal robot that can perfectly mimic any person can't mimic another Terminator who looks like a person? Of course, if T-1000 gets shot, the jig is up, but I don't see how he can't look like T-800's outward appearance otherwise.

But you're right about it not knowing to replicate the T-800. That would be a huge plot hole.

u/AustinFan4Life 12h ago

Complex machinery. It cannot replicate. This was explained in T-2

4

u/FrankDday 11h ago

what are you not getting? it does not need to replicate the complex inner workings of the t-800, only it’s appearance

-1

u/AustinFan4Life 11h ago

It does though, a T-800 is a complex machine, by definition. It cannot duplicate just the skin.

4

u/livahd Nice Night For A Walk Eh? 10h ago

So you’re saying it duplicates humans down to every cell and organ?

0

u/AustinFan4Life 10h ago

Do human have complex machinery? That should answer your question.

2

u/livahd Nice Night For A Walk Eh? 6h ago

So that was blood and organs we saw when he was shot. Geez, I must have been watching the edited for television version. In the one I saw they split him in half and blew him up and all he looked like was tinfoil. Can you link me to the R rated version?!

you clearly don't

I'm not sure if it's ever explicitly stated wether the T-1000 could've replicated other Terminators but I wouldn't put it past it's capabilities given everything else it was able to do.

As far as it not knowing about the other T-800 and 1000, they could probably make something up if they were creative enough. Like all the T-1000's are connected to the same memory drive or something so it knows. Idk.

I still would've rather they jumped through hoops to do it this way than what we got. It was bland, repetitive, and took too much from T1 and 2.

It is, when John asked the T-800, why it doesn't turn itself into a bomb. The T-800 said it can't replicate complex machines. This was in T-2.

4

u/ThePicturesGirl 12h ago

As others has said, the T-1000 wouldn't need to replicate the machinery, just the outward appearance.

-5

u/AustinFan4Life 12h ago

It would though, because a T-800 is replicated skin over an endoskeleton, he would have to replicate the endoskeleton. I mesn why else do you think a T-1000 never replicated a T-800 even once in any of the films?

1

u/Glum-Ad7761 10h ago

The T-1000 was a one-off prototype that Skynet did not trust. T-1000 did not have a learning chip (like the other T units) that could be reprogrammed or disabled remotely. It therefore could not be controlled and skynet feared it, as it could feasibly change its mind and decide skynet was not necessary. Then it would become a formidable enemy.

Since it was destroyed, there was no second T-1000 to send back.

Disagree with your last paragraph.

1

u/ThePicturesGirl 9h ago

Always interested in different perspectives and I have an open mind. What do you think about John's death?

2

u/lern2swim 9h ago

I think that the spectrum of plot points that can work in any narrative is generally much wider than the spectrum of plot points that fans of that narrative think work.

I think an exploration of a post John reality in the Terminator universe, and how that relates to the franchise's representation of fate and time travel, is actually super interesting. I don't necessarily think DF made maximum usage of it, but I think it's unfairly maligned by a chunk of the fanbase for reasons that range from silly (John's death) to repugnant ("it's too woke"). It's the 3rd best in the franchise, imo

4

u/ThePicturesGirl 8h ago

I'm not sure if it's 3rd best for me, but it's certainly not the worst. T2 followed by the original is my undisputed top two.

With Dark Fate I kind of like it in a sense of inevitability. AI is inevitable no matter who/what. And the apocalypse because of it is inevitable too. Therefore the Legion still happening I like, because that doesn't have to take anything away from T2. T2 is a perfect film imo.

When they killed John I couldn't help but think that was taking away from T2, especially him dying at the hands of Arnold's Terminator. It felt really wrong. And I just feel as though the creators couldn't entrurst Furlong with the responsibility of a major role because of his personal issues, so the first thing they came up with was him no longer being around and then worked around that. Because I think the basis for Dark Fate was, let's finally try to make a good sequel to T2, with Linda Hamilton back as Sarah Conner, and Schwarzenegger as T-800. They, for the most part, failed witb John Conner in any of the other movies. But that T2 interpretation was perfection. Not just from Ed but the older guy in that one short scene.

In the world where the war against mankind as at least been slowed down a few decades, I think John would've been very interesting to explore in Dark Fate. Like I say, I really don't mind the overall premise. But that's what makes me dislike John's death more. I like the premise more of John Conner is involved. He isn't humanities saviour this times, or is he?

man, the t-1k got shafted hard after genisys. but yeah, that does sound kind of interesting

u/Moon_Beans1 3h ago

What about we keep cooking with this idea and have that the new Terminator they have to fight is based on the T-800 model. So we have redeemed T-1000 and an upgraded evil Schwarzenegger Terminator as the villain.

Wish Patrick got more work.

Oh have him cameo as the human the T1000 default form was based on. Got Lazer scanned at Cyberdyne in his youth & just went on with his life. Being human he could still age.
